When I visited the Niagara Falls, I was really "tagging along". Someone visiting us wanted to see them, and since we were within "driving distance", we took them there. From all I had heard about how "awesome" the falls were, I thought I'd likely be bored. The only thing I looked forward to was walking "behind the falls".

That's because I did not know about "The Maid of the Mist". It was my coolest boat trip ever!

(For those who have not been, it's a boat that goes up the river from just slightly down stream, up to the foot of the falls. It goes really close to the falls. The falls are spraying you with a mist.)

In the boat, you really do get a sense of the force of the falls. You can hear the falls thunder and you can hear the boat's engines struggle.

I felt like saying to the falls: "We win!".

Another favorite I remembered...not a specific place, but a sight I love nevertheless: I love seeing the lights of a large city from a plane at night, the houses, the streets, the headlights of cars. It's the window-seat for me!

I agree with the city lights fom the plane idea. I just took a flight a couple weeks ago and was pretty amazed seeing the Florida panhandle from coast to coast at night. Also, on that same flight it was amazing taking off in the rain but then flying above the perfectly white rolling clouds with the sun beaming. I felt like I was in a dream.

New York City is great.

Also, a very memorable experience was going out on a tiny boat off of Hilton Head where the dolphins swam right up to the boat.

I also really enjoyed Epcot Center as a kid , though I haven't been there in a while.

I forgot all about Epcot til you just brought it up. I loved that place when I was a kid too. There' not many places where you get to go on scientific carnival rides and essentially tour every country in the world in one park. It's pretty cool. B)

There's a particular type of fountain that I like to watch. Not sure what it's called, and wonder if an engineer here would know and either explain how its done or point me to a web-page. Essentially, the water flows in a perfectly even flow, almost glass-like in its transparency -- nary a bubble. The flow is started and stopped very abruptly. I've seen one in the new airport terminal at Detroit. Its fun to watch (and it also screams 'man made').

I really like Monterrey and Carmel, California. It's very peaceful. I enjoy walking on the beach or quaint little cafes.

Monterrey has the BEST aquarium I've ever seen. Their new jellyfish exhibit is spectacular. The lighting makes the jellyfish glow, and you can see all the intricate details of their tentacles. There's also a huge tank with tuna and an ocean sunfish. The first time I saw it, I didn't know there was anything but tuna in the tank. All of a sudden, there was this big eyeball looking at me. I stepped back and saw a fish the size of a table, right next to me. Another favorite experience is feeding the stingrays. They don't announce the times, but if you happen to be there during feeding, they'll let you feed the rays.

  • 3 weeks later...

Seeing a huge barge-like ship go through a lock (e.g. in the 'Great Lakes') is pretty neat. You see the ship come in one end and then this huge object is lifted up (or down). Some locks even have trips where you can take a boat through them.

I like some bridges too: Golden Gate is "passe", but I do like it. The Chesapeake Bay bridges/tunnels were cool too.

I feel a sense of metaphysical joy (is that the term I should use?) when in an airport or on an airplane; this sense of exaltation is much greater than I ever felt in church (in the past, of course), which is why I like to think of the airport almost as a modern temple (kind of like, say, the Stoddard Temple would be).

I also love the Chesapeake Bay Bridge/Tunnel complex (click here for info).
