  1. M.I.T.'s OpenCourseWare available for Economics Great Microeconomics...and Macroeconomics...and Econometrics... By the way, where is the link for your site? [edit] Economic Library and History of Economic Thought, two more sites for your consideration. Also, if you are a good programmer and you really want a hard economic challenge, try and create a realistic hypothetical economy. It's easier said than done
  2. Hypothetically, if someone drinks, oh I don't know, say around 60 cups of coffee a day, what negative side effects would there be?
  3. Sorry, I got it from the John Galt speech in Atlas Shrugged. Yes, allow me to divulge my premises. Premises: 1. Epistemology is the philosophical field of knowledge, whose basis is determined by axioms. 2. Ayn Rand used axioms in metaphysics 3. Epistemology is not Metaphysics Conclusion: How can one use an axioms in metaphysics? Definitions: Epistemology - All ready defined (premise 1) Metaphysics - One of the 4 principal philosophical fields, it includes the fields of cosmology, ontology, and theology. It deals with the concepts of being, existence, universal, property, relation, causation, space, time, event, etc. Axiom - a self-evident truth upon which other knowledge must rest, from which other knowledge is built up
  4. It seems here Rand is arguing axioms should be used in epistemology. But didn't she use axioms in Metaphysics? Am I missing something?
  5. I was thinking the exact same thing. The movie would be forced to become more of a synopsis of the novel rather than the novel itself. It would be interesting to see "Who is John Galt?"
  6. Ayn Rand once wrote "there is no such thing as a contradiction, if you find yiourself with a contradiction, check your premises. One of them is faulty"(or something to that effect). But, if there is a liar who always lies, and says "this statement is false", is that true?
  7. OK, thanks everyone that cleared it up a lot!
  8. OK, so I have some various (basic) questions after reading some of Rand. 1) Objectivism's epistemology is rationalism("reason"). But Objectivism believes in an objective reality. Wouldn't it be necessary to use empiricism to discuss an objective reality? 2) I don't fully understand the necessity to not be contradictory. I mean, don't get me wrong, hypocrisy is bad, but does it really matter if there is contradiction or not? I just don't fully understand this principle, if someone could recommend something or gloss over it, that would be great. Thanks for the help!
  9. This is my favorite hobby... First, I want to reference some sites: AI Horizon: An introduction to general AI, and Perceptron Tutorial. This sparked me yet again to study the subject of AI. I looked into Holmesian Logic for a reference on reason, and through reasoning the perceptrons could store in a MemorY(computer memory) what happens. Through experiments, the AI could infer the answer to a problem, and after accomplishing this it could move onto other subjects and expand. Borrowing Freud's terms, the ego, superego, and id pay a role in intelligence. The ego is the conscious of self; the superego would be the liason between the conscious and subconscious, it is essentially the unconscious part of the AI with unconscious morality; the id is would be the reasoning thing.(I won't try and hide it, I am no shrink, if anyone knows about this it'd help a lot!). Using the C++ source code, would it not be possible to create AI?
  10. Does anyone know the basics to programming syntax/grammar? That may be the problem...
  11. I'm sorry for not replying, I was out of town for the last two days and away from the internet. Right now, I want to learn it for learning's sake. Right now, my "aim" is to build a really superb scientific/graphing calculator...one that is better than TI-90! But I want to know how to program for the sake of knowing it.
  12. Does anyone know how to learn c++ most effeciently? I have tried google but it didn't result in anything I wanted

    Hackers "good"?

I was discussing some issues with some friends and we came to the subject of hackers/hacking. By definition all a hacker is, is someone who is a skilled programmer...of course it has a negative conotation. But what do you guys think about hackers? Is it moral to hack?

    Music help!

I need help on several fields in the music theory in different school of styles(for example, the baroque school, the classical school, the romantic school, etc.): 1) Harmony. In each school I need help with what harmoney would be considered "appropriate". 2) Chord Progressions. Are there different chord progressions for each school? If so whaat are they? And can I just put a series of chords togather calling it a chord progression?
