Bridge, Poker, Canasta...
Hugh Akston replied to softwareNerd's topic in Recreation and The Good Life
Hold 'em if fun but I only play it on my cellphone...because I don't like to get into betting real money and occasionally I catch it on tv. -
can anyone help? (out of control sibling)
Hugh Akston replied to steff's topic in Psychology and Self Improvement
Good point Blinky, but then again the family is obviously not trained to deal with a mentally unhealthy person either. She is also not cooperating to go to help sessions, so the problem will only get worse until they find some form of professional help. -

If she makes threats to your family then it becomes a legal issue and you can make a police report about it, after that you can take that to a mental institution and they will keep her there and study her until they determine if she is safe to live with your family. If it's not that serious then your mom needs to take control of the situation and convince her to take therapy sessions. I know you're saying she refuses to but it is possible to convince these people, believe me I've seen it done. Tell your mom to not give into her whims. She may throw a fit but eventually she'll get the idea that her parent is not falling for it. -
Thank you. Indeed the part I was writing of is the "under god" part.

Since as of February 2006 I am eligible to become a U.S. citizen, I wanted to inquire what was Ayn Rand's oath of allegiance when she was naturalized. If anyone has a source they could link to or a book where this information is available please post it here. There may be a part to omit in my oath as the guide to naturalization states that I have the right to do so.

Should I Change My Name?
Hugh Akston replied to Hugh Akston's topic in Introductions and Personal Notes
I will keep that in mind. Yes you are right. I am sure there are plenty of other names. I'll put it on the list -
I have the opportunity to change my name next year due to some paper work that gives me that option. I am currently named after a zealot communist that his name is not even worth of mention. Yet despite this bad influence from my family I am an objectivist. I will also soon close a business-working a way to get out of the contract-that I am a member of, due to unfair practices that do not coincide with my values. So I was thinking of perhaps changing my name to Hugh Akston or something different from the name that I have. Ayn Rand's work has changed my life and I am not about to give my rebirth up, for some irrational guilt. What do you think?

Interesting Observation Regarding Member's Ages
Hugh Akston replied to ann r kay's topic in Introductions and Personal Notes
The older objectivist is less likely to use forums and is more concerned with work and interpersonal relationships in their work and household. -
How Did You Discover Objectivism?
Hugh Akston replied to The Wrath's topic in Introductions and Personal Notes
I actually like to watch it because of the beginning. Watching a writer complete a book is something that I want to do someday. Then comes the rest of the story which is also very compelling. -

Mysery is my favorite movie of all time -
Ha I'm glad I didn't get that far as a kid then. I read most of them but never got to where Aslan died. They were interesting to read as a kid but I did not pick up on the religious agenda. Now they are a vague a recollection of images in the back of my mind.

I like to use both. I always thought, "why waste a perfectly good left hand"

It came to my attention after watching a documentary, that the city of Atlantis aka Helike was found in 2001. Interestingly enough one of the first things they found was a coin with Apollo on one side and a dove on the other. See: http://www.helike.org/index.shtml
