  • Biography/Intro
I have come from a strong religious back ground. Having rejected this, I then chose to adhere to work, beginning with construction, then Mortgage work. I also have become interested in importing and exporting. I love the fact man had made a living and changed this earth by fitting or creating new products and values. Who know what lies over the horizon or past the moon. But first, priorities must be straightened out here.
  • Experience with Objectivism
I'll make this short. When I realized God was impotent (in the face of reality) I looked around and accidently found "The Virtue of Selfishness" and changed. It took many years to read her Ayn Rand's works, then to act on this new idea I only was responsible for my life. Since then I have in recent years, sponsored several talks for ARI speakers, and have talked myself to audiences I could never have imagined I could about Ayn Rand. I was instrumental in stopping tribal collectivism, and have been arrested for crossing police lines against tribalists, communists, labor, Palestinians and anarchists. This was in an attempt to correct Canada's laws of favoritism: To re-assert "Equality Before the Law." How can individual Rights remerge if with legal (economic) favoritism? In my activities I rely mostly on Ayn Rand's published books. "The Virtue of Selfishness", "Atlas Shrugged", "Anthem" etc.

  1. This topic, believe it or not, is critically important. Before I start, for anyone who reads this, I am living in Toronto, Canada and am Canadian. I came across a group in Caledonia, Ontario who were fighting collectivists (tribal collectivists, Unions, Communists, Palestinians, anarchists) for what used to be a core Canadian value: Equality Before the Law) not as "equality" is understood in its redistributive sense today. This group was determined to get the SWAT line, police and provincial politicians to enforce equality before the law by making a stand on that principle. I invited myself to the group and, by crossing the collective line with them, was arrested (twice) for crossing the police lines wherein we peacefully insisted on marching but the police deemed was a, "breach of peace." (We were not the proven violent group). You see, tribal groups, and too many favored groups get favored political treatment which they should not. I believe it is this favored treatment that is the subjectivity and arbitrariness so prevalent today. Now that I and this group called CANACE (Canadians for Charter Equality) have been arrested, the actions of the police are now being contested in the courts - and CANACE is winning the cases. No group or collective has any special rights or privileges that an individual should not possess. The entire sordid story of this fight and how the government is losing and being forced by the courts to be more fair (just) to Canadians has just been published in a book, "Victory in the No-Go Zone." Written by Gary McHale. I hope you can buy the book for it truly is enlightening. The author professes religious ideas, but his actual work and strategy is anything but divine. The entire work is well fought human effort. Canada is leading the charge towards socialism in North America, so we here have to be more active in opposing the statist policies. The government opposing our lawsuits are dragging it out, hoping we will quit, but I don't think we will. I do have some remarks I'd like some to answer if you will about the importance of, "Equality Before the Law." I deemed this principle important enough to go to jail (When I was first thrown in it was very intimidating. I couldn't physically resist or raise my voice as I was being handcuffed. I honestly didn't know if the police were going to lock me up and throw away the key - or what they would do to me there. I just knew I was right). I'd like some feedback on the relation of "Equality Before the Law" to individual rights. Priority, relationship, and need of,.... etc. if anyone doesn't mind. Thanks.
  2. I am glad to return to this forum which I have not seen in years. Hello to all! I am in Canada, specifically, Ontario. I work with groups who are not objectivist's but do understand the importance of freedom and individual rights. One such group is CANACE (Canadians for Charter Equality) working to repair Canada's "two tier" legal system, whereby some favored groups get favored treatment beyond Canadian treatment. Actually, it is much more than two tiers. It is a whole rapacious mob of various treatments pressure groups receive, all the while citizens get their rights stripped each year while being expected to pay for the charades. Now, my focus. Alberta (a western province of Canada) had a flood, citizens in a small town named High River were evacuated. As citizens were gone to higher ground, Canada's police took it upon themselves to search for possible missing persons who might not have made it up to higher ground. As they did this, they also took it upon themselves to confiscate (without warrants) rifles and guns of citizens in the homes they broke into. This act by the police was completely immoral, not to mention illegal. As Canadian tradition has it, people complain, but rarely DO anything about their frustrations. The below letter is a guide for any Canadians in western Canada who might see this to use as a possible guide - if you are outraged at illegal police activity. If you wish to contact me also, you can easily find me by typing my name: Ted Harlson. Open Letter to the People of High River: I am writing regarding the fact that the RCMP entered people's homes and removed guns. While I do not own a gun, I am outraged that police believe they have the authority to steal property from people - unless they had people's consent then it was illegal. In Caledonia, Ontario the police have repeatedly violated people's rights. As a result, my organization has filed criminal charges against senior OPP officers. To date, the courts have ordered 3 of the highest ranking officers in the province to be criminally charged - Commissioner Julian Fantino for threatening elected officials, Deputy Commissioner Chris Lewis for obstructing justice and Chief Supt. Ron Gentle on a charge of obstructing justice. In fact, our cases are now law across Canada as they are being quoted by judges in every province. Canada is the only country in the world that allows average citizens to charge government officials - in fact, our laws were changed in 2002 (under a Liberal government) to strengthen citizens' authority because parliament believed this ability to hold government officials accountable, via the laying of criminal charges, was the last line of defence in a democracy. No police officer is permitted to violate the Criminal Code and no officer is required to obey any order that causes him to violate the Criminal Code. Any senior officer who gave such an order has automatically committed a crime. Until average citizens step forward to hold police and government officials accountable there will be no end to such abuse by those in authority. Anyone interested in learning how to lay criminal charges against the officers (and/or their superiors who ordered them to do so) who removed property from homes can contact me at [email protected] Freedom isn't free - someone has to pay the price to ensure our rights are respected by authorities. 3. Hello Ladies and Gentlemen, I must apologise. It has been so long since I have even visited this site. I even had to reset my password but I do have some good news for those of you in the Toronto area. I have organized a lecture and the speaker will be Elan Journo of the Ayn Rand Institute. If you are in the area or know someone living in this area, please forward them this lecture description. Thank you. Ted Harlson. ---------------------------------------------------------- What Is America’s Stake in the Arab-Israeli Conflict? A talk at the Travelodge Hotel, Toronto, Ontario, Canada Who: Elan Journo, resident fellow at the Ayn Rand Center for Individual Rights What: A talk explaining what a self-interested policy would be like for America in this conflict. An open Q&A will follow. Where: EatonVille Room 1. Travelodge Hotel, 925 Dixon Road, Toronto, Ontario M9W 1J8 For maps and directions, see http://www.travelodge.com When: Wednesday, April 8, 2009, at 7 p.m. Description: Many people claim that U.S. policy regarding the Arab-Israeli conflict has been destructive of our security--and that a change in direction is urgently needed. Echoing many of his predecessors and legions of commentators, President Obama has announced plans to make dealing with the Arab-Israeli conflict a “key diplomatic priority” of his administration. What kind of policy toward that ongoing conflict is actually in America’s interests? What policy can enhance U.S. security? What in fact have been the effects of Washington’s policy? Has it been unfair? If so, to whom--the Arab-Palestinian side, or Israel? In a presentation addressing these and other questions, Elan Journo of the Ayn Rand Institute will offer a secular moral case for principled U.S. support of Israel. Admission: Open to the public. Admittance is $25, students $10. Parking: Discounted rate of $6 dollars per vehicle. Let the front desk know you are there for the meeting and the parking discount will apply for the evening. Bio: Elan Journo is a resident fellow at the Ayn Rand Center for Individual Rights, focusing on foreign policy issues. His op-eds have appeared in such publications as the Los Angeles Times, San Francisco Chronicle, Philadelphia Inquirer, Houston Chronicle, Atlanta Journal-Constitution, Chicago Sun-Times, and the Orange County Register. Mr. Journo’s articles have also been published in major newspapers abroad, including Australia’s Herald Sun and Canberra Times and Canada’s Globe and Mail. Mr. Journo is also a contributing writer for The Objective Standard, a quarterly journal of culture and politics. Mr. Journo lectures at college campuses and has given numerous radio interviews on foreign policy and the threat of Islamic totalitarianism. For more information on this talk, please e-mail Ted Harlson at [email protected]. Please note: The above event is organized, hosted and sponsored by an Objectivist community group. Although ARI encourages community groups, they are organizations independent of ARI Sincerely, The Ayn Rand Institute
  4. Noth America is in a real state of intellectual crises. What I like is the hard, clear and direct drive by the ARI to promote Ayn Rand's ideas even more than ever. I have personally taken the responsibility to distribute THE UNDERCURRENT, an objectivist student newspaper to universities in my city of Toronto, Canada. In addition, I have written ARI, asking how I can begin fund-raising for ARI in my major, well, known, multi-national courier company. I will mail internal copies of letters to several managers, including the CEO's of Canada and America, asking them to consider supporting ARI. I will ask. Ted. .... and I won't stop there.
  5. Why be good? Because it creates values. ...and values are what we try to gain or keep. Values are positive and life giving. Here is one example. Being good means in the epistemological sense, being rational. Thinking and coming to reasoned conclusions that benefit your life and those around you. Being good affects yourself positvely and at the same time - others. Making proper decisions benefits you - you gain! It could be material gains. It could be spiritual gains. It could be both! Living positely opens the door for more even more opportunity and strengthens your better qualities, such as sense of justice, sense of reasoning, sense of industry, sense of your own skills and attributes... So now go enjoy being good - to yourself and to others.
