  1. Quite true, but I posit that a 'system of production' must also be in place before a robust, flourishing life can be lived as well. A concrete example is the buring of the Library at Alexandria in about 415 AD or so had the effect of shutting down the system of production in place. This marked the end of productive civilization known in the world then, (especially the end of grain grown in Egypt) and the whole world literally rotted for the next 1000 years. It is difficult to imagine a robust, flourishing life lived in that thousand year period. My take on Rand's condemnation of looters quoted elsewhere in this thread is that it 1) destroys themselves in terms of living a robust, flourishing life and 2) in the long range they destroy the production system. 2. Thanks Uncle Rich....... I personally am a Wagner Opera fan and I have studied to some extent the influences on Richard Wagner (This guy's life gives the word 'sad' a whole new definition, as depicted by his malevolent universe sense that is present in his operas. Yet the genius of his compositions push the envelope of artistic ability to the literal edge of what is possible.). Re your: 'Now just imagine what Kant as the greatest philosopher and the unforgivable guilt for the holocaust do to the Germans.' It occurs to me that you might be too hard on your fellow Germans compared to the rest of we Homo Sapiens. The National Manic Depression you have described, but left unstated, was present before the Holocaust and dates back to when the Huns integrated Kant into their individual intellects. It spread to North America in time, but was not lethal until the early 1900s. You might want to review some back issues of 'The Objective Standard.' One of them was about the explosion of new chemical and physics processes discovered in the late 1700s and early 1800s, and how afterwards the discoveries dried up in the same proportion that people started taking Kant seriously...... Hillarious? Yes, indeed. But they address something deeper in the modern office environment, I think. During my working years my envelope calculation was that 80% of the work was done by 20% of the people. Moreover, promotions and attaboys [girls?] mostly went to team players. Individualists did survive, and indeed, some times did prosper. (They did this by the super quality and quantity of their work). The Despair.com prints addresses the team players in the office. (The best way I have found to spot a team player is that he/she doesn't know the difference between hubris and ability.) Cecil
  4. I, too, think that body fitness should parallel mind fitness in importance amongst Objectivists - Rand alludes to physical activies by some of her heroes that would not be possible for unfit folk. However, I have gone to one ARI convention and long ago one TOC convention and, after factoring out the youth crowd , alas Objectivists just look like the general population. Where I expected to see 40-something and older folk appear suave and sophisticated and move or stand with no apparent effort, the norm was high fat content skins with complexions that suggested an inner plea for decent food and a lifestyle suitable for the living. I would be interested to know if anyone else on this blog shares my opinion. Cecil Williams
  5. J_WC, Consider first that getting out of the conflicting hell in which you live is possible, but only possible by solving the problem yourself. The second thing for you to fully understand is just how badly you were abused (mentally and intellectually), if at all, as you grew up in your household and in your community. For example, if you had an emotional experience or were severely influenced by others who had them in a 'Pentecostal' enviornment your scars, will be vastly different from one who was simply an observer in such a household. The third thing to consider is your qualifications to grapple with these issues with the cognitive skills you possess today (it will not be easy!). For example, if you were taking an advanced calculus course lacking a solid grip on algebra you would go mad - and soon drop the course. Many, many people read AR and 'drop her advanced course' bcause they lack the prerequesites. The first of the prerequisites are to thoroughly de-program yourself by integrating Objectivism's three fundamental axioms into your whole psyche. Once you have achieved that, the remaining steps become obvious and executing them are comparatively easy. Good luck to you. Cecil R. Williams [email protected]
  6. I would like to suggest a Paypal Money Market Account. I use it because 1) they provide a no-fee debit card(s) for everyday expenses and 2) they pay currently 4.45% on deposited funds (no fee) and 3) one can easily move funds from and to one's commercial bank, again with no fees, and finally 4) they rebate 1% annually for all debit card purchases. In non-financial considerations, they are owned by Ebay - the global symbol of 'the trader.' Another thing I like about them is that their motif doesn't hawk things like 'FDIC Insured' which constantly remind one of Big Brother. Cecil R. Williams
