    America Serves

"When you choose to serve -- whether it's your nation, your community or simply your neighborhood -- you are connected to that fundamental American ideal that we want life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness not just for ourselves, but for all Americans. That's why it's called the American dream."

The Obama Administration will call on Americans to serve in order to meet the nation’s challenges. President-Elect Obama will expand national service programs like AmeriCorps and Peace Corps and will create a new Classroom Corps to help teachers in underserved schools, as well as a new Health Corps, Clean Energy Corps, and Veterans Corps. Obama will call on citizens of all ages to serve America, by developing a plan to require 50 hours of community service in middle school and high school and 100 hours of community service in college every year. Obama will encourage retiring Americans to serve by improving programs available for individuals over age 55, while at the same time promoting youth programs such as Youth Build and Head Start.

  2. That's odd, when I do a search for "mad men" (w/ or w/o quotes), nothing comes up. I have done okay with the search function before.

Definitely a great show, amazing set design and period accuracy. The writer wrote an episode or two for the Sopranos and it shows to an extent: there is a definite nod towards the eventual and real consequences of being immoral and/or not lacking integrity. But there is also a nod towards nihilism that suggests that you're damned if you do, damned if you don't.

As far as Ayn Rand, I sense that the writers are trying to skewer her as a hero to out-of-touch, arrogant conservative types who are looking for a cheap rationalization for their cutthroat behavior. I don't think the writers would say that advertising is nothing but smoke and mirrors- they clearly have some respect for the craft of advertising- but neither would they see them as "prime movers" or "producers".

Basically a classic mixed bag of good and bad premises. But highly entertaining. And for those who are up to date on the episodes, it looks like Don Draper's chickens may be coming home to roost next week..

    Just an FYI:

  3. If I were to give a full reply to your claims (Athena, Matus, and Bretz), it would have been far more insulting than anything I have wrote so far could have been for you. I am not going to go against forum rules, and therefore I am not going to reply altogether, since I can't speak my mind fully.

themadkat: Nice reply. :dough: You just forgot to answer the added question: Why did you post all of that. (Of course, this is all optional, so just letting you know in case you want to answer).

I asked a simple question. Seeing as you have given no answer and are patently refusing too I conclude that this is indeed spam and leave this to the administrators to do as they see fit.

  4. I saw I Am Legend last night. I thought the movie was excellent. It was action-packed, funny at times, emotionally tugging, and haunting. There was not much dialogue throughout the movie, so that left every point to be made by Will Smith's actions. It was a telling story.

What I thought was really poignant was Will Smith's courage to continue to survive. Most people would just commit suicide. His motive for why he tries to survive,

to try and find a cure to fix the vampires

, was noble and right. I thought the whole movie represented good morals.

There was only one injection of religion, but Will Smith rejected that properly.

    As for the ending:

I have heard many people complain that the movie was good until the last five minutes. Since I did not ask them what they disapproved of (since I had not seen the movie at the time and did not want to ruin it for myself), I can only imagine that it was Will Smith's acceptance of his own death. I did not think this was a cowardly or stupid act at all. I think it was a full realization of his values. He knew that his death would achieve his highest value, the reason he had been surviving for three years: to find a cure to re-populate the world.

All in all, I thought Will Smith played a very heroic character, who was strong, determined, and passionate. I highly recommend this movie.

I liked this movie as well. I have not read the book either.

  5. Frankly, Ron Paul is the best Republican primary candidate.

I will continue to support him and his effort to secure the nomination.

Guliani is 2nd. Should either Ron Paul or Guliani win the nomination I will vote for one of them.

The most important issues for me are the Economy and Education. Period.
