Ben Archer, I share with you the feeling that there's something not right with the cartoon.

If the ban on chemical weapons is rational, then let's have a ban on all weapons, since such a ban would put an end to war.

Just because you can't find work right now doesn't mean you'll never find work. The ticket to life really is, "Try, try again." If you can't find what you're looking for, or maybe don't know what you're looking for, keep trying. If you can't find it in time for making rent, find another way to make the money in the meantime -- take any job that will pay the bills, and be a good worker while you're there.

If you don't have a main goal for yourself, keep trying until you find one that you like enough to give it everything you've got. Once you have that goal, and you really, really want it, go for it. But then, of course, you can always change your mind later, or change anything along the way if you need.

Michigan since the Doctor is right in that I'd be voting for Johnson in any other year.

Johnson finally hooked me with his "5%" rhetoric. Wisconsin.

Kind of what I assumed, i.e. he was thinking of 'the women was naked, and you were naked, and she was grinding her crotch into yours, and saying 'I don't consent'', but he forgot to speak those details out loud. In that situation, yeah its not rape, since it would be akin to saying 'I am not eating' with a mouth full of cake.

I will have to go back on my earlier statement. I don't think the facts of the Kobe case are actually what is important. Apparently Peikoff may have had no idea what he was talking about.

What was important was that he clearly had an idea of what had happened. That narrative, although fictional, was what was important, not the actual case. The reason is that Peikoff was trying to illustrate (very poorly, and for no reason) a case where a woman wasn't raped.

I'm also horrified at the extent of the attempts by participants in this forum to rationalize Peikoff's statement.

John Link reacted to softwareNerd in Lee Cooperman's Open letter to Obama
Lee Cooperman is a hedge fund manager who used to work at Goldman Sachs about 20 years ago, but has run his own business for many years now. Far from being "right-wing", he is one of those who signed on to Warren Buffet's pledge to give away a good portion of his wealth. Here's a profile from Forbes.

Cooperman has written an open letter to Obama. His main point is that Obama's rhetoric is unproductive and potentially dangerous. Here's the full text. It is worth a read, and if you like it, pass it on.

I think a President's tone is an important issue, because it does impact the media and intellectual discussion. I think it matters if a president sounds resigned (Carter), pragmatic (Clinton), upbeat (Reagan), or scolding (Obama and Roosevelt).

I hope more rich people -- the true "1%" have the courage to stand up against the increased class-warfare rhetoric. Thank you Mr. Cooperman.

    I have two points:

    1) You said you chose to respond to the quote of Wittgenstein, but your essay hardly deals with the quote. Instead, in a few paragraphs, you attack his entire philosophy. I think the essay would be much better (more importantly, more in line with the assignment you were given) if you were to limit yourself to exploring the meaning of the quote. You express disdain for "The limits of my language mean the limits of my world.", but you don't even say what you think it means, or doesn't mean. I could certainly find possible interpretations that would not lead one to the conclusion "What an awful world that must be!". Have you considered any such interpretations?

    2) I've never read Wittgenstein, so I don't know whether or not your claims about his ideas are true or false. What you've written does not support your claims or lead me to have confidence in their veracity, since you've included not a single quotation of his writing. As far as I can tell all you've done is regurgitated someone else's (Ayn Rand's?) ideas about Wittgenstein.

Good observation, it does indeed demonstrate that ( amongst so many, many other things). It also demonstrates that the physicists involved do not understand that infinity is a concept which only indicates a certain potential to progress in a sequence or some such.
