  1. I agree with everything you said Doug. I don't think anything else can be said about this topic, it has been thoroughly explained. And is Worthylover a troll? It's sad that as people are suppose to mature as they get older, they instead seem to decline. How odd. What factors do you think have influenced this 'anti-reality' mentality, or is it subconscious evasion?
  2. Your posts on physiology peaked my interest, Blacksabbath. I am a Cat 5 cyclists and I was wondering if you knew any information on increasing power without building wasteful muscles. My aerobic system is good but since I have just started, I lack strong enough legs to advance beyond Cat 5. My skill is in climbing--to much weight is detrimental to my success in the mountains so I have to avoid getting bulky muscles.
  3. I thought this forum was to educate people who are serious about Objectivism? I don't see how your condescending post fits that criteria.
  4. You sure their not just being sarcastic?
  5. In a free society the only means of interaction between people is voluntary. Since there is no public land, this means that if people would like to have a government the individuals would give their own land; they would donate it. But only on strict guidelines. The land is only to be used for government processes; that which is needed to run a government effectively. These procedures would have to be ratified by Representatives of the people.
  6. I won't go through the exact details of what my assignment is because the creative work is suppose to be mine alone. I appreciate any tips and suggestions from you guys. I've learned a lot from reading from this board for quite awhile. It is a literary analysis of a short story, in my case it is Midland by Rick Bass, from narrativemagazine.com. My question is: what is the best approach to dissect a short story? How can I break it up into sizable chunks without destroying the big picture?
  7. You mean a democratic laissez-faire capitalist society? There's no such thing as a 'capitalist political system' since capitalism is an economic system. I sympathize with you though, that's one hell of a project.
  8. Who's Goebbel and what was his technique?
  9. Oh yes, Lance! I love watching him; he's so inspiring. I never get tired of him.
  10. Are there any fans of the cycling, and is anyone watching le Tour de France? What do Objectivists feel about sports?
  11. Captain Jean-Luke Picard is my hero! Always rational; always calm; even in the face of incredible danger. It seems like some of you are concentrating to much on the negatives; blowing them way out of proportion. Ayn Rand was a fan of Victor Hugo even though their philosophies were very different. It was his ability to create drama and write incredibly descriptive pieces that won Ayn Rand's respect.
  12. Thoyd is talking to you Geiss. I found out about that website from a friend of mine and thought that it would be a good place for philosophy enthusiasts/activists.
  13. What is your point? I never said that they were Objectivists. They know an awful lot about other philosophers though, and I thought that people here would enjoy some friendly discussions with other people whore share an interest in philosophy.
  14. I came across this msg board and found it interesting. There are some very knowledgeable philosophers that frequent it. I thought if anyone wanted to hone their argumentation skills this would be a good place. http://www.talkphilosophy.org/
  15. It would be impossible to see the Rwandan genocide and we are talking about something much more complicated then a building--something much more accessible. Can you explain how your analogies bare any relation to Moore's movie?
  16. No need to see anything first hand, huh? Why bother forming your own opinion about something when you can just read it from someone else.
  17. If you havn't seen the movie then you cannot in all honesty give opinions about it.
  18. I was told that political and economic systems are COMPLETELY seperate--having nothing to do with each other. This doesn't seem to make sense because economic freedom can either be restricted or left alone by government. What did Ayn Rand have to say about the relation between these two systems?
  19. I was wrong. She works for an advertising company, and so what they do is create the designs for books.
  20. I will be taking Introduction to Philosophy this fall and I was given three books on the subject. I was wondering if anyone had heard of these, and what there thoughts are on them. Introducing Philosophy: A text with integrated readings Seventh Edition by Robert C. Solomon and Plato: The Last Days of Socrates Which include Euthyphro/The Apology/Crito/Phaedo Books encouraged to read along with The Trial Of Socrates by I.F. Stone
  21. I have a friend who's mom works for a publishing company. During this weekend I will try my best to get in touch with them and find out some more information. If this sounds like what your looking for, I can get you her phone number. I'm not exactly sure if her company would do anything like that, so I'll find out.
  22. I don't have anything to add to this discussion because I have just started reading Ayn Rand, but I'd like to comment that reading your posts (especially RadCaps) are very educational and really inspire me to further my education in logic and philosophy.
  23. I just realized that the default for the date of the posts was 30 days and so I wasn't looking at all of the boards posts. Thanks for the quick replies.
  24. Several questions. 1. Are there private companies that create WMD's (weapons that have the potential to kill much more then guns) 2. Are these companies only allowed to sell them to our government? If in the future we had the ability to make WMD's affordable and accessible to individuals, should we have the right to do so? When would a person become a threat to the safety of others while it is in their possession? If I'm correct, Ayn Rand saw that there was a difference between the potential and the actual. So I'm inclined to think that it would be alright to be in possession of a WMD, but at the instance of a possible threat the government has the right to intervene and stop the initiator. *edit* I should also add that I did not find any posts in particular to what I've asked.
  25. 'Around the World in Eighty Days' is a corny action adventure/comedy with Owen Wilson and Jackie Chan.
