  1. This is a very interesting discovery, thanks for sharing the article Ryan. It really shows the capability and intelligence of man even in those times. I'm skeptical of Schmidt's evaluation of the site, however. Nothing there seems to necessarily point to it being a religious site: it could very well be a 13,000 year old work of art absent of religious influences. The works on the stones were of naturalistic things, nothing symbolic or "other worldly." I doubt Schmidt has really invested too much time into philosophizing about the nature of art anyhow, so I'm not going to hold anything against him. Huge kudos to Schmidt for finding this site, impressive.
  2. I don't see a problem one way or another. Who doesn't like psychopathic murderers?
  3. Ahhhh, life is good as a prostitute. *Puts heels up on desk*
  4. I play Team Fortress 2 and Left 4 Dead 2. Steam name is currently 'Mr. Dick Crotchly.'
  5. I tend to dress for a mix of functionality, comfort, and looks. I think the point of ties are to cover up the buttons on a shirt; thus, making the clothing look more symmetric and seamless.
  6. If I were to get a tattoo, I would want the tattoo to be both a work of art and something I was absolutely sure that I wanted ingrained into my skin for the rest of my life. It would also be good to have a tattoo that complimented the rest of your body; too many tattoos look like someone just slapped a decal on to your skin. Personally, I would want a phrase or words to be only a portion of a tattoo, where symbolic images would make up the bulk of the work. The symbolic images and wording would fit and compliment the contours of my body. That means, I'll have to pick a location on my body that the tattoo would be best for, as per the content and design. The posters above that said that tattoos are cheap have a point. If you don't put the time and effort into the tattoo, it will be cheap. Tattoos are big deals and are, for the most part, permanent. They're not something to be taken likely or done on a whim; they should be things that you put a lot of thought into and done with the greatest quality.
  7. Oh nice. I would like to have a discussion about this, as I'm fairly ignorant in the matter and interested.
  8. I don't see any reason to direct rage at Moore. He really isn't worth considering in any manner, whatsoever. I find Rand attractive. LOL
  9. I assumed based on the nature of what beauty and morality are as concepts. Morality is the code of values that guides our choices and actions. A value is that which benefits the individual whom is valuing. Something that is beautiful is precisely that which reflects values, i.e. that which is moral. Beauty is based upon morality and is, in itself, moral. Therefore, beauty is a moral concept. Unless I'm misunderstanding what you meant by "Beauty is not a moral concept," your statement is incorrect. I neither said nor implied it was. My statement was in the context of my entire post. Beauty devoid of morality and values implies beauty devoid of a valuer, taken in the context of your posts, which imply there is such a thing as beauty where one thing is necessarily more beautiful than another. Beauty devoid of a valuer implies intrinsicism. I agree that unchosen things can be of value. My hands are extraordinarily valuable to me and I didn't choose to have them.
  10. I'm referring to Jake Ellison in the above post.
  11. I'm curious as to how beauty isn't a moral concept, as I assumed that beauty was precisely that which is moral, i.e. that which is good. It sounds like you're regarding beauty as something intrinsic, not to put any words in your mouth.
  12. I remember that, in my high school AP US History class, it was simply assumed that the US was wrong in dropping the bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki; any points otherwise were mocked as obviously incorrect, even if there was reason backing them, this latter point was used to attempt to discredit reason as such. I remember being the only person on the pro-bombing side, on the class debate of the subject, who was taking it seriously, while everyone else mocked the position. When I let loose a self-righteous response, everyone tried to play it off as a joke I had made. God I fucking hated/hate those people... Now, I'm curious, is my response to this situation correct with deep seeded hate and loathing towards these individuals?
  13. freedombreeze, Unconditional love isn't valid love in any manner. Everyone has to earn the love you feel for them. Blood means nothing. I don't know the nuances of your experience with your son, the complete set of values you hold, or the depth of those values you hold; only you know/(can know) these things. So far, your son has lied on multiple occasions in order to bring you harm, and, when he's not doing so, he refuses to communicate with you or your side of the family, at least this is what I gathered from your post. You've also expressed concerns as to whether he will lie to you if you two were to ever communicate again (faking a warm disposition is lying) in order to spy for you ex-husband. Personally, I wouldn't think there is a valid reason for him to do any of the above, but I don't know the situation as well as you do, as close, personal relationships are complicated. It's tough when someone one loves/loved takes a turn for the worse psychologically. When the loved one begins acting maliciously and destructive towards the lover, it behooves the lover to stop loving. One cannot remain a rational, selfish person while valuing a human being that is attempting to harm his/her life. Indeed, if the loved lies to the lover regularly, it becomes difficult for the lover to distinguish what is true, what is false, and who the loved actually is. You know the situation better than I do. Good premises.
  14. You've done well. I appreciate this site very much.
  15. I smoke cigars occasionally. I usually don't find the taste while smoking it all that great, but I find the after taste and the smell of the smoke mildly enjoyable. Taking everything in account: price, risks, and pleasure, I don't right know why the hell anyone would smoke regularly, if at all.
  16. lol. Pat Robertson is hilarious. There really are few comedians who commit to a joke like he does. "The Haitians made a pact with the Devil." That one killed me Pat. Keep up the good work!
  17. "This morning I received a donation request from a charity that will, with my money, provide tattoo removal for the homeless." I just find that funny.
  18. This is curious, however. There is much talk about 'nuclear mining,' but what about regular mining? Companies own large quantities of TNT, enough to move mountains. Isn't it then possible for entire cities to be at the mercy of these companies if a TNT shipment came into a harbor? Is it illegal for companies to mine with TNT because of its destructive capabilities? When does something become too dangerous? Oil tankers are also extremely dangerous. Are our lives at the mercy of the whim of a tanker or cargo ship captain/worker?
  19. I completely understand where QuoVadis is coming from. When I was first trying to understand Objectivism I got some sass for just trying to figure out some basic epistemology with QED, without any overt attacks on Objectivism. While doing this on the chat board, I got insulted multiple times because there was apparently plenty of material on the subject that I hadn't read and, since I hadn't read it, I was a 'retard.' *cough*Athena*cough* This, of course, isn't to say I'm not guilty of this either. On multiple occasions, I've found myself getting angry, for no good reason, at people, simply because they didn't immediately understand Objectivism. This reminds me of one of the gripes I've long had about my Dad. Who would derisively ask "You don't know how to change a tire?" or get angry at some other 'simple task' that I didn't understand how to do, in which the knowledge of said task should've magically fused itself into my brain via my mere existence. What my Dad and other people who get angry at newcomers don't seem to understand is that knowledge is not automatic. The content of your mind isn't given to you; understanding isn't given to you. These are things you must obtain through cognitive effort. Helping these people who are genuinely trying to make this cognitive effort is the best way in which to get them to understand Objectivism.
