Is the real purpose of the health care bill to destroy the private ins
Black Wolf replied to BRG253's topic in Current Events
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B98muhufAGE More liberal whining God damnit "Whats so American about competition" Yeah, what's so American about competition against the government? It's only the exact thing that is contradictory to what this country was founded on. This video wasn't even funny. It was just "let's push a liberal agenda and add a little sarcasm in here and there". -
Owning waterways on the soil would be conceivable, but it would be very difficult to own oceans. Still, privately owned waterways would be a nice idea. It could circumvent pollution.

Why shouldn't I steal ONE dollar from a millionaire?
Black Wolf replied to Hotu Matua's topic in Questions about Objectivism
I'm sure, aside from the obvious response of "Stealing one dollar from a millionaire is still stealing", is that this kind of mentality can lead to a slippery slope of further stealing. Just steal a little more money from him! It's okay! After all, he makes a lot of money, it won't hurt! ...Just steal another dollar from him! Okay, I promised myself I wouldn't steal again.. but.. just a little more! -
Then that's what would need to be changed too: the aspect of our society that singles white people out as racists. But hate crime laws are still stupid. Should I take that as a good thing?

Rich people benefit from the poor being poor?
Black Wolf replied to Black Wolf's topic in Political Philosophy
Your post was rather hyperbolic, especially where you referred to Marxism as "innate evilness". It's not really evil, just a flawed belief that is doomed to fail. -

I'm going to start a business, and make sure that nobody is able to afford my stuff. -
Yeah, um, the law says that if a white man were beaten up by a black man, that would be a hate crime. I still have problems with laws such as these. It infringes on the independence of a judge, and it's a federal mandate. It makes the assumption that the judge MUST take into account that the person was racist. We need manslaughter, first degree, second degree murder, etc. What we do not need is the government condemning racism. It's not the government's job to establish or punish racism.

Taxes: Government Financing In A Free Society
Black Wolf replied to Dan9999999's topic in Political Philosophy
Here are some things that I haven't been able to answer: - How is an obligation to pay in exchange for living on a certain peice of land "theft"? - When referring to "theft", does tax apply to the income tax or any tax, including a consumption tax or a property tax? - How would you be able to fund the military? It's not like there is a specific benefit that a national defense can provide one single person. It would be pretty hard to charge individuals for what the nation as a whole would need. -
How can you blame people who's lessons we don't follow for what's going on in the world today?

Oh, it's not Obama's fault. It's those evil obstructionists fault DADT is possibly the most unfair policy directed at the gays. Problem is, very few people discuss the most unfair aspects of 10 USC 654. There's the false equation of "Telling people you are gay" == "Advertising your sexuality". That has been debunked over and over again, true, but people insist on believing otherwise. But what it does not address: - You can't get caught having sex with another man - You can't attempt to marry another man. How on earth do you prevent another man from marrying another man? Off duty? You can't.

How to prevent rescission of contract
Black Wolf replied to Black Wolf's topic in Political Philosophy
My point was that insurance companies shouldn't be allowed to deny coverage based on errors. Ie: I'm sorry, but you spelled your name wrong, so I'm not going to provide the coverage that we agreed to. I'm not saying that insurance companies should be forced to extend. "I'm not giving you coverage because you made a typo" is not something I feel unilateral rescission should apply to this. On the federal level or on the state level does the law make reference to this? http://www.texas-opinions.com/law-rescission.html I'm gonna try to find where the law makes reference to this, it seems interesting -

Would it be unreasonable to reform torts so that you can't say, "Oh, I'm rescinding this contract because your actual weight is less than 170lb. You are 175lbs." -
The 16th amendment prevents us from avoiding the income tax

Please excuse me if I am asking a question that people have felt they've answered several times before, but I'm very curious about some things? - Why are taxes "theft"? If you want a government that protects all individuals from force and fraud, how is the government going to get the financing to do so? - Would objectivists object to taxes on the state or local level?

I'm referring to how rescission of contracts is usually something the contract allows for. I'm curious about this. -
How to prevent rescission of contract

Hmmm.. this is interesting.. has there been a study on this? -
*** merged with an earlier limited-liability thread. - sN *** The difference between an incorporated business and a non-incorporated business is that incorporated ones pay a double taxation. In exchange for the second taxation, should the business go under, the government will pool the money for the successful corporations to pay for the losses of the first one. In a society where government plays an invisible hand, would corporations get such protection? Would they survive long without it? Would the ones that don't survive cause a backlash?

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/ian-pearl/i-...g_b_326137.html I don't know, it seems like this guy has had insurance for quite some time. He actually GOT covered times before, but this time, he did not. I'm actually not sure what you mean here. -
So one complaint I've heard about our health care system, is that fraud is rampant. That rescission of contracts happens very often, and someone paying $1000/month to a health insurance company may get nothing in return if it's too expensive to do so. Thus, the only logical solution, as opposed to prevention of fraud due to tort reform, we implement a public plan that costs $1.5Trillion dollars. While nobody can argue with such a huge debt and such a huge amount of government control, let's entertain the idea of tort reform. - What is causing insurance companies to steal money from people through rescission? - How do we reform torts to allow for insurees to get their coverage when they actually need it?

Rich people benefit from the poor being poor?
Black Wolf replied to Black Wolf's topic in Political Philosophy
If there is a surplus of your job, then the value of your work is low. Your skills can be found anywhere, thus, you don't have much intrinsic value. In contrast, if there is a shortage of your qualifications, the value of your work is high. -
Dr. Seuss takes on Obama (satire)
Black Wolf replied to SapereAude's topic in Domestic United States Politics
Heh. Well, the page said "Right wing chicks", so I got confused. -
Does this claim have any validity? This is a Marxist theory, a theory that the top wealth in any system benefit from the poor being poor. Examples of this theory include: - Rich people benefit from the poor being ignorant - Rich people benefit from the poor being desperate This may hold some water in a system where wealth or status is literally set in stone by the government. In a more capitalist society, a business who would exploit the poor in such a manner would be trampled by the businesses that don't try to preserve such a status quo. A business donates money to a charity, competitors will have to donate to charity to keep the business alive A business gives educational benefits to their workers, possibly in hopes that the workers will still work for the company, competitors will have to do likewise to stay in business. Rich people don't benefit from people being dumb, because dumb people can't find ways to avoid paying taxes. Dumb people can't find ways to make their business more profitable. Dumb people can't come up with new technologies to perhaps make their business more efficient. Rich people don't benefit from people being desperate. Perhaps there is a slight need for a feeling that their product is NEEDED, but not desperate to the point at which they'd throw more money at them. It does not do business owners any favors to have idiots jacking up the price for their capitol.
