Steve D'Ippolito
For the past few days, the little orange boxes that appear next to my unread posts have gone missing. Can someone help me find them? (Both at home and at work, by the way.) At the risk of sounding like a second-hander, I am glad I am not the only one. Seriously, it's a bit of a pain especially on threads that get a lot of posts to try to figure out where I should start reading to keep current. Mimpy
Good, I'm not crazy. I am experiencing the same difficulty.
D'kian
I was about to post a reward for the capture of my orange indicators. Alas, I couldn't find a photo to post over the "dead or alive" bit.
Qwertz
I thought it was just me! Because they disappeared right after I upgraded to Vista and I thought I messed up Firefox cookies or something. ~Q
Tenure
Hooray. Thank you for starting this topic Kelly. I've been groping around in 'View New Posts' trying to judge if I've read the last post in each thread and such and such. I think Socialist goblins took them. Steve D'Ippolito
I think Socialist goblins took them. Confiscated and redistributed to the people.
Cogito
It was wealth-redistribution. Some under-funded forums in the inner-city just couldn't afford to put little orange boxes next to their new topics, so the only moral thing that could happen was the government stepping in and making sure every forum had its fair share. DavidV
The icons disappeared when I updated to a new forum version. I had no idea what they were until you guys mentioned them. Hopefully there will be a fix out soon.
DavidV
It looks like this problem only exists with this forum. I have no idea why.
DavidV
My Assistant -> New Posts -> [View New Posts Img] does seem to work.
Inspector
Also, it is marking topics as read which I certainly have not read.

Inspector
Why don't you go... inspect... into the incident, then, eh, Night watchman? Scruffy's on break. Seriously, though, I'm not a mod, so I have no such ability to look into the matter. Edited November 1, 2007 by Inspector
softwareNerd
GC has searched some forums to see if this is some type of newly reported bug, with no success. Still looking.
DavidV
Now the board show the unread icon, but only for this thread. Gremlins?
Tenure
Also, the little American flags have disappeared - the ones that appear on the left hand side of tabs, when one tab-browses through the forum (don't tell me you guys use anything other than tabs to browse the forums!). softwareNerd
An update: the guys who develop the forum software (IPB) are aware of this bug. They say it'll be fixed in the next patch release. Meanwhile, they have also provided instructions on how to patch it manually. Unfortunately, it's more than a single line in a single file. I hope to try their work-around soon (hopefully over the weekend).

(Of course that could be my ignorance of how best to use this site.)
softwareNerd
I've applied the fixes and haven't broken anything blatantly obvious in the process. So, anyone who has encountered this problem can now try this. 1. Once you're done reading new posts in the inconvenient way now required... click the link that "Marks all New Posts read" According to the instructions, this step is required, before it will work right. 2. Sometime later, come back to the forum and check if the "pips" have appeared correctly for stuff you have not read. 3. Report back, here
Steve D'Ippolito
I get what looks like correct pips now...and I did not have to hit "mark all posts as read" So the fix works too well and probably needs to be removed. All kidding aside, thanks!
