Anyone know if you can get by in life without a Social Security # in the USA. Its optional but it seems like you have to have one to do a lot of different stuff.

Any thoughts.

Well, as long as you aren't claimed as a dependent on anyone's income taxes, don't make any money, and don't have a bank account, I think it's unnecessary.

The reason why I ask is I just had a boy and debated long about getting him a SS#. It seems like they have made it so you have to have one to function which sucks.

Congratulations Erik.

Yes, it does suck.

I suppose that eventually you'll have to welcome your son to the land of the free and the home of the brave. One day it will truly be so.

As an Objectivist, I am quite curious as to the source of this resentment of the Social Security number. Although it does represent the entry of a person into the system of taxation, and can be resented for its symbolism, I doubt this is the source of resentment.

If it is an "invasion of privacy" that concerns you, we have something worth discussing at some length.

A.
