For those of you protesting against Bush's concessions to religion may I present the next Senator from Illinois:

Mr Alan Keyes

One Nation Under God

This is the guy who once said that opposition to abortion was the hallmark of his run for the presidency in 1996. Considering the real chance that he will be a Senator perhaps there should be some concern over handing him a bully pulpit from which to preach?

I feel sorry for voters in Illinois.

BTW, since Republicans are pitting him as 'The Future of Republicans' running against 'The Future Democrats', I wonder what future Republicans we can expect to run for president if the Bush team goes down to defeat? If you think Bush is religious there are far worse in the wings....

On the positive side, I could see Rumsfeld making the transition to VP candidate in 2008 very easily if his name stays in the public eye. Often members of a successful presidential cabinet will make a run for Presidency. But if the Bush team only gets 4 years, will the public remember them in 2008? Or will media hounds like John McCain steal all the thunder?

Rumsfeld and Rice -- now THERE'S a ticket!

Keyes reminds me of the way Bush, Sr. was able to breach his integrity for a chance to run as Reagan's VP. Bush pulled the same switch on the abortion issue.

It's too bad. Keyes held several key positions which would have made me vote for him, but he seems to have no problem changing his tune. I sometimes wonder if a fundamental inability to maintain any consistency is at the top of the list for political office.

I am a huge fan of Rumsfeld. His leadership at Defense is the main reason I will stick with Bush. Who in the world would Kerry put in his place? I shutter to think! Nor do I care to contemplate what it would do to our military. It is easy to imagine a mass exodus of military personnel under Kerry. Things were bad enough with Clinton.

Unfortunately, Sec. Rumsfeld is already in his 70's. I can't imagine him remaining in gov. service after Bush (especially if he serves 4 more years). He's a very robust man, but the stresses involved right now with his job are tremendous. Of course, the political climate makes his job all the more difficult.

I do wonder what Rice will do, though. She certainly would make a superior candidate to Hillary. It would be interesting to watch the two vie for the presidency.

The sad part is that Keyes is the most consistant free-marketer in the entire Republican party.

I have not heard any quality free market arguments originate from him. He seems better at rehashing material written by other people. I look for new material when I look for interesting spokesmen on the right. Capmag has been good at getting some of the non-Objectivist writers material linked on their forum if you want to see some examples of good material.

Keyes is pretty strong on the religious stuff. I hope he never becomes a serious candidate for president.

The race between Barak Obama and Keyes isn't even the worst of it for us here. For a random sampling of the kind of thing we get on almost a daily basis:

Here's a story from the Chicago Tribune, our local pinko rag:

State Violating Medicaid Laws

On top of that we get treated to the occasional dogfight between Gov. Blago and Speaker Madigan on the senate floor. Thats when Blago is even in the capital, most of his time is spent wallowing at the feet of Daley - Tyrant King of Chicago.

Not me. I wish a republican like him would run in my state so people would at least get to thinking about the abolition of welfare. Where I live the welfare state is unquestioned and I'd be hard-pressed to find any 'conservative' in my state who openly denounces entitlement programs. That is not to say I would vote for him, I would just appreciate his opening some minds on that front.

If you read Obama's speech from the convention, he actually seems to have a pretty good sense of what is great about America. Yes he has a lot of silly socialist ideas, but overall he is much better than Keyes the religious nut.

excerpt:

"I stand here today, grateful for the diversity of my heritage, aware that my parents’ dreams live on in my precious daughters. I stand here knowing that my story is part of the larger American story, that I owe a debt to all of those who came before me, and that, in no other country on earth, is my story even possible. Tonight, we gather to affirm the greatness of our nation, not because of the height of our skyscrapers, or the power of our military, or the size of our economy. Our pride is based on a very simple premise, summed up in a declaration made over two hundred years ago, “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal. That they are endowed by their Creator with certain inalienable rights. That among these are life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.”

That is the true genius of America, a faith in the simple dreams of its people, the insistence on small miracles. That we can tuck in our children at night and know they are fed and clothed and safe from harm. That we can say what we think, write what we think, without hearing a sudden knock on the door. That we can have an idea and start our own business without paying a bribe or hiring somebody’s son. That we can participate in the political process without fear of retribution, and that our votes will be counted—or at least, most of the time."

Sure there is a lot of crap in it too but overall I thought it was better than most politicians.

Yes but you cant take a paragraph here or a paragraph there and ignore the whole context. Obama is one of the most dangerous liberals to come along in a while. He's young, presentable, articulate and representative of old school liberalism. He is pure altruism with a sugar coated vaneer. He's dangerous and not someone to compliment in any way, shape or form.

Well all I know about him is that one speech and few superficial news articles.  What makes you think he is so awful?

Robert Tracinski has been reporting on him in both TIA monthly and daily. He has quoted him extensively and shown his whole philosophy. Dr. Hurd also had a nice expose of him likening him to someone else with a name that sounds like his; ie Osama Bin Laden.

And lastly, he is a high profile liberal. What else do you need to know? That party has long since lost any benefit of the doubt.

Neither one should be in the Senate. Alan Keyes came out with a brand new version of reparations, trying to put a new spin on this disgusting movement. Talk about redefining political correctness, sheesh! He proposes legislation that would exempt all descendents of slavery from federal income taxes as reparations for bondage. Now, unless someone is over 139+ years old, they were not a slave. Alan, isn't that discrimantory in and of itself? No one should have to be subjected to the government thievery that is income tax, yet you only propose blacks to be exempted? This not only puts a new spin on the idea of reparations, but by proposing this idea he all but justifies and sanctions the idea of income taxes. This negates any credibility he ever had and certainly exposes him as unworthy to be a holder of elected office and a public servant.
