Most of the songs Oasis made had an individualist, optimistic theme to them. I was thinking just the other day about the optimism of Oasis vs the cynicism of Blur - probably why Oasis were much more popular despite the bands being roughly equal in talent (well, POSSIBLY that's why, could be other factors)

Even their pessimistic songs like Cigarettes and Alcohol

'Is it worth the aggrevation, to find yourself a job when there's nothing worth looking for?'

'You could wait for a life time, for your time in the sunshine, so you might as well do the white line...'

but when they get to the chorus, they can't help themselves - 'You gotta make it HAPPEN, you gotta, you gotta make it happen...'

but they have other songs like

Maybe I just want to fly

I want to live I don't want to die

Maybe I just want to breath

Maybe I just don't believe

Maybe you're the same as me

We see things they'll never see

You and I are gonna live forever

Maybe I will never be

All the things that I want to be

But now is not the time to cry

Now's the time to find out why

I think you're the same as me

We see things they'll never see

You and I are gonna live forever

We're gonna live forever

Gonna live forever

Live forever

Forever

hmm but i tend to not think about rock lyrics too much. heck, i even AVOID thinking about them

Make Yourself was the one that came to my mind first. Another is perhaps The Middle by Jimmy Eat World.

Incubus had a lot of Individualist "think for yourself and be yourself" themed music on Science and Make Yourself.

Most of the music that appeals to my individualism is themed at criticizing people and things that aren't particularly individualistic... notably religion and religious people.

Yeah, I have the Make Yourself CD, it does have a lot of stuff I really like on it. I haven't heard the Science one before though, that was their first one I think. Hearing that though makes me more curious about looking into it maybe though.

No, their first album was some horrible jazz thing about hot dancers and getting high called Fungus Among Us.

In my opinion Science is their best work, and after Make Yourself the band just took a sharp nose dive, became overly commercialized and started cranking out singles and trash albums.

Science In Order

Hugely influential album for me when I was growing up.

How so?

I was wondering the same thing. In terms of actual artistic merit, there are few rock bands that rival Pink Floyd. In fact, I'm gonna go ahead and say that the only band that even comes close--in terms of real, musical, artistic quality--is Led Zeppelin

For rock songs, I like the anti-socialist Rush song "The Trees."

For heavy metal, Judas Priest has a lot of individualistic songs like "Hell Patrol" and "Leather Rebel." I really enjoy the lyrics to "Dead Meat."

Lyrics:

The hangman's noose won't get me

Gas chambers never stress me

They line me up against the wall

No firing squad will make me

Confess or even break me

I'll stand alone or not at all

I will not obey

I will not betray

I will not give in

Not while I'm living

No... surrender

We never will... surrender

CHORUS

We are all dead meat

Cut us, watch us bleed

No shackles made will chain me

No endless pain will change me

The scars will testify this all

No solitary confinement

Will break my strong resignment

I'll die before I will conform

I will not obey

I will not betray

I will not give in

...Not while I'm living

No... surrender

There'll never be... surrender

CHORUS

We are all dead meat

Cut us, watch us bleed

Read in my obituary

Defiance breathes victory

No cage they make can hold me

No law enforce controls me

No trap that's sprung stops me for long

No prison cell contains me

No snares they set will claim me

Relentlessly I'll fight them all

I will not obey

I will not betray

I will not give in

Not while I'm winning!

No... surrender

We never will... Be driven asunder

No... surrender

We never will... Raise the white flag

CHORUS

We are all dead meat

Cut us, watch us bleed

Indoctrination... !

Will never

Suppress me

They're seriously mistaken!

Cause I'll take them all

Down with me

And just before they're finished

They'll scream along with me

We are all dead meat

I agree, though much prefer PF to Zeppelin. Roger Waters is a musical genius. IMO.

Whoever that was that recommended "Live Forever" by Oasis, thanks. Great song.

Here are some I like:

"Rose" - A Perfect Circle

"Stupid Girl" - Pink

"Battle for the Sun" - Placebo ("You are a cheap and nasty fake, and I am the bones you couldn't break")

"Slave to the Wage" - Placebo

"Sing Your Life" - Morrissey

"The Fight Song" - Marilyn Manson

"15" - Marilyn Manson ("This time I won't hesitate to kill to protect what I believe in.")

"Better of Two Evils" - Marilyn Manson

"Little Boxes" - Malvina Reynolds

"Here to Stay" - KoRn

"Alive" - KoRn ("Once I cried, now I wipe away the tears. Once I died, now I'm alive.")

I guess some of them technically aren't rock songs, but I like 'em anyway and I tried my best not to list tons of rap songs. :P

"Precious Declaration" by Collective Soul

"The Show Must Go On" - Queen

IMO, very inspirational... definitely one of my favorite songs.

I should also say that Pink Floyd is my favorite band, and "Learning to Fly" is one of my favorites. I have everything from Meddle up to Division Bell! :P

Kittie - In Winter

You fell to the ground like rain

On deaf ears your cries met hands And knees were blistered

Shouting from the tallest tree

You declared wrong

But they never listen

There's safety in numbers

This cold-hearted world!

The Coldest Winter...

You don't see me like I know you

Hiding behind glass

So sickened by grief

You can't let them win

They'll have you

Playing life makes death so good

This cold-hearted world!

The Coldest Winter...

You don't know, And you never will!

For me, this song captures the tragedy of how individualism often comes at the price of loneliness.
