JerryB
The INSTITUTE FOR OBJECTIVIST STUDIES (the original name of David Kelley's organization, after a parting of the ways with Dr. Peikoff, some 23 years ago) has had a rebirth as a separate entity, not affiliated with The Atlas Society, and with its own agenda for re-invigorating the academic development of Objectivism as a philosophy and movement. The new IOS intends to conduct its own seminars, which appear to be primarily for Graduate level students (see the link to their discussion, below). .Several prominent TAS officers and frequent speakers or participants are on its Advisory Board, as well as others not associated with TAS. The site has a rather extensive series of blog-style discussions of the history and current state of the Objectivist, "movement," along with presentations on what the new IOS is for and what it intends to accomplish - .such as Academic Mentoring, and its own series of seminars, as well as creation of an online Objectivist Bibliography and Annotation projects. Founded by Professors Irfan Khawaja and Carrie-Anne Biondi, the new project has a decidedly academic orientation and is aiming for the creation of a much larger presence of Objectivist-oriented intelligentsia on college campuses. Readers of Objectivism Online, and other internet Objectivist-oriented forums, will likely find their observations stimulating - and they invite comments.. Garshasp
An interesting development. Serious scholarship is important to any intellectual movement. I don't know what their level of high-quality thinking and writing will be, but I wish them well!
Boydstun
Garshasp, Irfan Khawaja is known to me personally. He is a highly trained professional philosopher, as is his associate Carrie-Ann Biondi. Irfan contributed a paper to Metaethics, Egoism, and Virtue (2011), edited by Allan Gotthelf and James Lennox. I have some comments on that paper here. Another paper of Irfan Khawaja “A Perfectionist-Egoist Theory of the Good” appeared in my journal Objectivity in 1997 and is available online in V2N5. The two seminars Khawaja and Biondi have designed look excellent: Fall 2013 Spring 2014 Edited May 28, 2013 by Boydstun
Boydstun
The seminar on the epistemology of concepts this fall was marvelous. The advance readings were very worthwhile.* The discussion was tremendous, with much cross-fertilization among professional philosophers and intellectuals from other disciplines, all serious students of philosophy. Irfan’s leadership in our seminar was very productive. Thanks to him and to Carrie-Ann for bringing this off and for the hospitality. Return to this spot to find what definite shape develops for the Spring 2014 seminar from IOS. If it would be feasible for you to travel to Glen Ridge NJ, west of Manhattan, and if you would like to study David Kaspar’s Intuitionism for discussion next spring with others competent in and alive to Rand’s philosophy, contact IOS.
