Rosie O’Donnell, Debra Messing, Ed Asner and Michael Shannon are among the dozens of artists, entertainers, and activists who have attached their names to an effort calling for a month-long protest to stop President-elect Donald Trump.

“No! In the Name of Humanity We Refuse to Accept a Fascist America!” reads a full-page ad placed in the New York Times on Wednesday by the group Refuse Fascism.

So Democrats think Trump is fascist — and that fascism is a bad thing? But if they think fascism is a bad thing, then why do they want so much government intervention in the economy? Because that’s what fascism is: Government control of the people through ownership of the means of production, with nominal ownership for politically connected business owners (think: Clinton Foundation).

If Democrats hated fascism so much, then surely they would have opposed Hillary Clinton with even greater fervor than they now oppose Donald Trump. When you look up fascism in the dictionary, Hillary Clinton belongs right there. She favored more government control over the economy, and was willing to accept millions of dollars in bribes to sustain that power. Trump, on paper at least, favors less government intervention in the economy — fewer regulations, lower taxes and more privatization and localization in health care and education. How Trump performs in practice remains to be seen, but clearly whatever bugs Democrats about him cannot be his actual or alleged fascism…not if Hillary Clinton was their preferred choice.

“The Trump regime must and can be stopped before it starts!” the ad reads. The group urges its supporters to “step up the resistance: walkouts from schools and work, protests against attacks and threats on Muslims, women, people of color, LBGT people – all linked to the objective of Stopping the Trump/Pence regime. The struggle must grow.”

But wait a minute. What’s the purpose of this struggle? What’s the end game here? It doesn’t sound like the end game is victory in 2020, when Trump might be replaced with a different President. It sounds like they want Trump deposed now. No impeachment process. Just depose him. Their fantasy appears to be a Revolution. Not simply a turn against Trump. But a regime change — a literal one. But who is to ensure that happens? The American military? Well-funded billionaires of the leftist variety, people like George Soros and Mark Zuckerberg? But isn’t that fascism and dictatorship … only with their own guys?

The organization regards Trump’s presidency as “illegitimate,” and says the incoming administration will capitalize on the various “virulent movements of white supremacy and anti-immigrant hysteria” on the rise in America.

If Trump’s presidency is illegitimate, then the Electoral College and the vote held on Election Day no longer matter. But if they don’t matter with the 2016 election, then what’s to support the legitimacy of a Democratic victory in any other election? And what’s the basis for holding an election sooner than 2020, if that’s what they have in mind?

Clearly, there’s only one answer here: Elections no longer matter, not to intellectually arrogant and ignorant people like Debra Messing and Rosie O’Donnell and — we can only presume — to their party’s supporters.

As for “white supremacy,” what’s the evidence for this? Trump says he favors lowering corporate and income taxes; reducing government spending in many areas, other than for defense and highways/airports/bridges; and repealing Obamacare in favor of as yet unspecified free market initiatives for medical care. Whatever you think of these policies, what do they have to do with white supremacy? White supremacy would consist of a government forcing private individuals to discriminate against people by race. Right now, our federal government already does that by imposing things like racial quotas and hiring practices on private individuals and companies. While it would be equally wrong to impose such policies in favor of whites rather than in favor of blacks, it’s wrong either way. Most likely, Trump will leave the racial policies favoring blacks in place. At most, he’ll get rid of them altogether, if he can (my own preference). Regardless: How do either of these approaches constitute “white supremacy”?

When Obama’s opponents criticized Barack Obama for imposing controls on the economy and nationalizing health care, they were called liars, racists and perpetrators of “fake news.” Why don’t people who call Donald Trump and his supporters “white supremacists” feel any pressure for proving their own claims?

We live in increasingly dangerous times. Increasingly, I honestly wonder if America will survive a complete civil and social breakdown in our own lifetimes. Open a history book. There has not been this much division since the decades leading up to the Civil War. We’re in danger all right. But it’s not because of Donald Trump.
