This particular poll might have more to do with who participates on internet forums rather than who Objectivists are. I suspect any older Objectivists would be less likely to use an online forum just by virtue of not being as familiar with computers.

I'd say the technology factor and the 'cynical & jaded with age' factor probably play into it if we take the poll as typical for the online Objectivist community. I think that 1) just goes to show the bright future the scores of young people responsible for intelligent discussion here will go on to lead, and 2) tells us young ones to value the insight of the fewer older members that form this community in particular - there not all that common. I'm certainly learning a great deal from their manner and observations.

Incidently, I am 20 yrs old.

Buncha young whippersnappers! Why in MY day we didn't have these fancy newfangled convenient forum thingies! We had to get our philosophy discussion the hard way, by hiking ten miles through blizzards . . .

Ahh, I amuse myself. B) I'm 25.

If you're anything like me, I hiked 10 miles up hill on the way there and 10 miles up hill on the way back! Let me tell you, that's not easy.

I'm an old guy. 40 something.....

Buncha young whippersnappers!  Why in MY day we didn't have these fancy newfangled convenient forum thingies!

In my day, we didn't have the internet. We had BBS's. Basically we held up the telephone and yelled *BEEP* and *BOOP* at the right time into it and lo and behold something would print out on the TV that was spliced into the back of our Kaypro's because we didn't know what a "monitor" was back then.

In all seriousness, I remember making the comment to my friend that when my dad brought home a modem bragging that "holy crap, it's got like a 300 baud rate" and they didn't that it was possible for a modem to be that fast. I was of course lying because it really didn't go that fast but they wouldn't notice since the BBS would work just as slow.

And for those that have never seen an acoustic coupler, that 56k modem you ignore to hook your cable modem in actually has a 56000 baud rate give or take. And to think I'm whining to my fiance about the lag on our wireless network when I'm only getting like 18 Mbps in our new place.

I'm in the deep mid 30's category.

Hah, I've been told that eventually there doesn't seem to be much point in keeping track. My mother has to ask me how old I am before she can calculate how old she is. Frequently she says "Jenni! You're getting so old! Stop that!" Because, of course, I'm making HER old by getting older. :P

You want to feel old and really have time fly past? Wait until you have kids. My daughter is going to walk across the stage tonight in a cap and gown as she graduates from high school. This Fall she's off to dance and go to school in NYC. It just seems like yesterday when she was a little crumb-crunching monster running around the house....

Kids are certainly a life changing experience.

As one parent to another, isn't it true that there are no words to accurately express that?

"Life changing experience" is true, but -- when experienced -- the words seem like understatement

It doesn't look like a bell curve to me!  Far from it: looks like a Poisson distribution.

<{POST_SNAPBACK}>

LOL... While math was never a strong point for me, I do know what you mean. (Ok... I looked it up) :)

So this would mean most O'ists or those leaning O'ist are young. Or the young are just more prone to visit forums.... ? (edited: or that the young are more likely to respond to the poll?)

........If it is in fact truly a Poisson distribution. Since I don't have any statistical analysis software on this computer, I can't say for certain if it is.... only that it looks like that shape.
