I was reading an article today which states that Bono (from the band U2) and Carly Fiorina (the ex-CEO of HP) are up for the job.

Frankly-- I think this is disgusting......I don't know if I can say anything else about it....

for all you who care to read: Bono

That would be a minor step in making clear how insidiously bad and comediacly moronic the World Bank is. Fiorna would finally get the power she desires and Bono would have a built in platform. Carly would be able to blame everyone else as she did at HPQ but Bono would probably freak at the thought of actually having to put something behind all his words. Stunts like calling the white house are all fine and dandy but here he'd actually have to put his money where his mouth is, well, it would be ugly. Talk about chickens coming home to roost.

"Most people know him as a rock star. He's in a way a rock star of the development world, too. He understands the give-and-take of development. He's a very pragmatic, effective and idealistic person," Snow said.

Is it even possible to be idealistic and pragmatic at the same time?

The entire concept of the World Bank is appalling and disgusting.

The hiring of those two only augments my opinion on this anti-capitalist organization.

I don't see how anything in the Objectivist ethics can support the idea of using taxation (coercion) to pay off debts that the taxpayer (victim of coercion) did not voluntarily contract. Bono, in calling for certain debts to be forgiven, is essentially upholding the idea that people have no obligation to cover debts arranged by some other party.

What gave you the idea that any Objectivist was advocating coercive taxation?

What gave you the idea that I was suggesting that any Objectivist had advocated coercive taxation? My argument in outline:

Taxation is coercive (see Virtue of Selfishness.)

Taxation is the means by which governments of developing countries pay off their debts to First World financial institutions.

Bono's proposal to forgive such debts would release taxpayers in debtor nations from an involuntary burden.

So the World Bank will now pour even more money into the pockets of 3rd world dictators - whose sole concerns are the plights of their people?
