andrew
I don't know if anyone in this forum is from Michigan, but this is still a relevant story. Check out this article: Authorities break up private lottery, seixe $2.2 million I find it disgusting. I'd be interested in hearing other's take on it. Apprentice
From the article: The sheriff and prosecutor are filing civil suits to retain the $2.2 million and use it to patch their recession-hit budgets, Worthy said. "Law enforcement can reap the benefits of this kind of behavior," Worthy said. She said the extra cash would come in handy, "especially with all the homicides that are going on in Detroit and Wayne County." Well, this pretty much says it all to me--for them, it's not an issue of whether these people should morally be able to run their own lottery. It's about revenue collection, which, I'd say is the entire point behind why gambling has become a state venture and not a private one. Disgusting is exactly right. felicity
The sheriff's attitude is despicable. There is a similar philosophy that is creeping in from the philosophy of law: "The one with the deepest pockets should pay the most...not the one with the most guilt"
AshRyan
Wow. That is perhaps the most blatant example of government looting in the U.S. I have ever seen.
Richard_Halley
Wow. That is perhaps the most blatant example of government looting in the U.S. I have ever seen. What about income tax?
AshRyan
I thought about that, but decided that taxation is not quite as blatant since it is historically the norm.
