softwareNerd
Good news on the health front: a preliminary version of an artificial heart. It has been tried in patients who were extremely ill, and had only about a month to live, and that too in an ICU. Most patients in the trial were too ill to be given anti-coagulants. The average patient managed to leave hospital for home-based care and lived an average of 5 months. The company says that the device could extend life for a maximum of about 18 months. The next version is in the works already. It will be 30% smaller (the current one weighs 2 lbs.) and will have a maximum life of 5 years. The news-story also has information on the FDA's meddling.
