I would like to know if there are any Canadian members on this site. (I don't want to bring up a topic like canadian politics if there aren't any.) Let me know!!

If so, let me know what you think about Canada vs. US. Who's better off? Your opinions?

i'm a canadian, and proud to be...

I think that the whole idea of canada vs. the US is merely a smokescreen used by the american government to dismiss any opposite views on their policies... the way they acted just because france would not back them up... changing 'french fries' to freedom fries is absurd... and blaming canada for allowing terrorists to come into the US thru theri borders? has anyone ever crossed the border from canadato the US? you travel thru a US border... and so it was US guards that let those terrorists drive on thru... were it the other way around, i have to say, the canadian govn would have searched my car and made me pay duty on anything i was bringing across...

but i try not to stereotype anyone, and so i will not judge americans based on a few bad apples... *cough W cough*... i prefer instead to judge each person as i meet them and are presented with their personal qualities...

I am Canadian from Toronto. Canada's fundamental philosophy is different than America's. Canada's motto is: Peace Order and Good Government vs. Life Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness. You do the math. Taxes are generally much higher in Canada and business is generally hated.

Compared to other countries, Canada is great but not agaist the USA. I would rather be American.

Considering what you say, I wish you were too. We can always benefit from people who understand and appreciate what this country means.

Sort of like, "Physician, heal thyself."

I am curious. Have you attempted to emigrate?

Not yet. I am very entrenched in my city--have kids, job, house etc. In the future I want to expand my law practice to a warm state and get a green card. Canada is still a decent place to live--except for the weather.

I think the opposite... that Canadians somehow believe they are on the higher moral ground compared to the US by supporting big government and universalized health care. Look at the elections going on now--the majority of the political parties attack the Conservative approach to an "American system" or "turning Canada into America". Most Canadians have a spiteful and "morally superior" attitude towards Americans, especially those which vote, and by attacking anything associated with America (freer economics) is a strong way to rally support.

On a side note: Even my science classes have a socialist swing (thanks to state high-schooling curriculum). In biology we watched a video that was akin to being anti-human (very environmentalist) and blamed Mexico's problems on lack of state welfare and minimum wages.

BTW I on Vancouver Island ;) (but can't make it to the Objectivist conference at UBC)

My canadian-patriotism comes from a love of canadian history, and not the sugar coated 'we were the land that slaves ran to for freedom'... i know that canada has its probs like every other country, but my feelings are not that of a moral superiority, but those of satisfaction that the government respects the wishes of canadians and doesn't go to war for imperialist reasons... i think that a universal health care system is viable, and in our day and age shouldn't be thought of as a hand out, but as an equalizer...

Am I missing something? You are a laissez-faire capitalist, correct?

[Edit] Nevermind, I see your other thread, and you are a clear supporter of government theft. Why must there be an equalizer? Aren't people entitled to the money they earn?

From a utilitarian perspective, Canadian economics are not long-term viable, if they continue in this trend of second rate socialism. Taxing businesses and rich 50% or more of their earnings only creates disemployment, while reducing investing and expansion of business. If a company were to move to a country and employ 1000 people, and it had the choice of Canada where the tax rate would be 50%, or the US where it is ~25%, why would it go to Canada? It certainly wouldn't go for the freezing weather.
