    Objectivism Is The Everyman's Philosophy

In the universe, what you see is what you get,

figuring it out for yourself is the way to happiness,

and each person's independence is respected by all

Existence exists. But does this imply that existents exists among other existents? (Boydstun)

    Ogg_Vorbis
    By Ogg_Vorbis,
I fully grant that existence does indeed exist. However, that statement is rather ambiguous, as traditional philosophy makes a distinction between existence and Being -- with the emphasis often placed on one over the other -- because the idea of Being is not present in the empty tautology "existence exists." It is not to say that the concept of "existence" exists, as that would be obvious; but that a thing called existence exists that is not itself and can never be an existent. Because exis

You Can't Think for Yourself? The Contradiction of Ayn Rand's Moral Theory

    Ogg_Vorbis
    By Ogg_Vorbis,
Did Ayn Rand try to teach people how to think? Or did she try to tell them what to think? One of the benefits of independence is having the right to think for yourself. This benefit, believe it or not, is a result of Cartesianism. Before DesCartes in European culture, people were almost entirely engaged in groupthink. They had little or no sense of individualism. HIs doubting encouraged, in principle, independent thinking. "I think, therefore, I am" places the emphasis on the self instead o

KANT’S WRESTLE WITH 'HAPPINESS' AND 'LIFE'

    By Boydstun,
KANT’S WRESTLE WITH HAPPINESS AND LIFE I composed this study in 2009. It has been online at the OBJECTIVIST LIVING forum since then. It would be good to have it right here. (I began online posting in Objectivism-interested forums in 2005. That was at the site REBIRTH OF REASON. In a while, I found that I could compose serious extended philosophical writings on such forums, which was not the usual fare, and no one would object. Later the posting site OL came on the scene, and it showed the n

Unveiling Ayn Rand's Misinterpretation: Kant's Noumenal Realm and the Fallacy of the Consequent

    By Ogg_Vorbis,
-Ayn Rand (For the New Intellectual, 32; Kndl ed.)     If the majority of philosophers rejected Kant's "noumenal" realm, they have left out an important aspect of his philosophy - the source of all phenomena. Because even if the noumenal is unknowable, it is, for Kant, the grounds for phenomena beyond the senses. It doesn't matter if the senses modify, what matters is that Kant posited the noumenal's existence.    It is THIS that is the problem with modern philosophy - not

    By Gus Van Horn blog,
During a walk, I was trying to listen to the Yaron Brook Show, but was having a hard time between the constant wind and the volume being low on that episode. I could make out bits and pieces, but was mostly frustrated. Fortunately, one of the bits I could make out was a rather topical recommendation: Listen to Leonard Peikoff's Ford Hall Forum lecture (embedded below), "A Philosopher Looks at the O. J. Verdict." Correctly hoping it would be loud enough to hear over the wind, I took him up on t

I was glad to see the following several hours later. https://www.foxnews.com/politics/matt-gaetz-election-bribery-probe-bloomberg-florida

    Objective Reality and Objective Living

OBJECTIVE REALITY AND OBJECTIVE LIVING   [Here are some highlights, from the perspective of self-realization and self-betterment, of the meaning of the concept of Reality or Existence:  the widest, most abstract and fundamental of all concepts, subsuming and integrating all other concepts – yet, at the same time, it’s the most simple, concrete, directly observable concept, seen in each and every thing that’s real and exists. Reality exists all arou

    How To Be Happy

    By KyaryPamyu,
Schopenhauer was a big influence on Nietzsche, and Rand liked Nietzsche more than just a little. "His 'Thus Spake Zarathustra' is my Bible.  I can never commit suicide while I have it.", wrote Rand, answering a questionnaire, circa 1935[1]. By way of spiritual lineage, could it be that some of Schopenhauer's ethos inadvertently found its way into Objectivism? Well, probably not, but I'm getting paranoid! It's time for a trip down philosophical hall of fame. Like many philosophers of his era
