There's a great interview with John Lewis today on PJTV about the Iranian election.

Watching this interview prompted me to relate the Iranian situation to America's new Tea Party movement. There may be elements of good intentions but for the most part their purpose is ill-defined. For either to be of any consequence they need to define their opposition on some fundamental level. Obviously Iran is much more unlikely to do that, unfortunately.

Already posted. I think Dr. Lewis is off in his assessment. Fundamental change may indeed be happening. "Death to the dictators" is one of hell a powerful statement.

... now that is an encouraging sign. If more follow in his footsteps the theocrats could be cooked. Also if the army turns on the Guard, they could be cooked.

better than raw Persian...
"As soon as A observes something which seems to him to be wrong, from which X is suffering, A talks it over with B, and A and B then propose to get a law passed to remedy the evil and help X. Their law always proposes to determine....what A, B and C shall do for X." But what about C? There was nothing wrong with A and B helping X. What was wrong was the law, and the indenturing of C to the cause. C was the forgotten man, the man who paid, "the man who never is thought of." "He is the victim of the reformer, social speculator and philanthropist..." - William Graham Sumner as adapted by Amity Shlaes in her book, The Forgotten Man.

A leading cleric has declared the death penalty against the protesters.

"Khatami, a member of the Assembly of Experts, said the judiciary should charge the leading "rioters" as being "mohareb" or one who wages war against God.

"They should be punished ruthlessly and savagely," he said. Under Iran's Islamic law, punishment for people convicted as mohareb is execution."

So, the revolution is on to the bitter end -- it's either overthrow the ruling council or be killed. I hope the protesters are prepared to overthrow their government.

There are people within the government who want the Supreme Ayatollah gone. Previously, the government presented a united front. There are cracks now in the foundation.
