Objectivism Is The Everyman's Philosophy
In the universe, what you see is what you get,
figuring it out for yourself is the way to happiness,
and each person's independence is respected by all
-
Rand's Philosophy in Her Own Words
- "Metaphysics: Objective Reality" "Nature, to be commanded, must be obeyed/Wishing won’t make it so." "The universe exists independent of consciousness"
- "Epistemology: Reason" "You can’t eat your cake and have it, too." "Thinking is man’s only basic virtue"
- "Ethics: Self-interest" "Man is an end in himself." "Man must act for his own rational self-interest" "The purpose of morality is to teach you[...] to enjoy yourself and live"
- "Politics: Capitalism" "Give me liberty or give me death." "If life on earth is [a man's] purpose, he has a right to live as a rational being"

The Enlightenment Test: Are You A Sheep Or Wolf?

By Francis Galton,
Take the test: http://www.transtopia.org/quiz.html My score:
"MEMETIC SHOCK LEVEL 03 (0-4): borderline Enlightened. Purgatory; the countercultural realm. The more interesting Atheists, Libertarians, Transhumanists, and Modern Satanists dwell here, together with other freethinking and politically incorrect types. Congratulations, you're just a couple candles short of Enlightenment! Keep honing those clearly present rational, taboo-smashing instincts, and one day you too might become an Enl
Searching members

By srogers,
It would be nice to search the members by some of the items other than name. For example, would be nice to search on location to find members nearby.
Behaviourism

By buiq,
Hello:
In evolution, it is not the strongest that survives nor the weakest. It is the most adaptable to the environment survives. Base on the above statement, the environment then essentially affects the behaviours of the individual or group. The individual or group cognitively behaves one way or another to adapt to the environment to survive- B.F Skinner's point of view. Rand objected to behaviorism.
Could you tell me where I can obtain her writing on the subject of behaviourism?
CATO's Take on Iraq

By AutoJC,
I first became aware of CATO's unusual stand against the Iraq war about a year ago in a debate forum at the Mac Addict site. A poster, whom I normally respect for his defense of capitalism and individual rights, linked an article and claimed that true capitalists would not have approved of or supported this war effort for any reason.
And now, this has surfaced yet again. In my respect to this forum so that I don't hijack the thread I extracted this from, here we go again:

Force Defined

By AisA,
RadCap was kind enough to give me his definition of force.
"Contact with the person or property of another, regardless of that other's consent."
We are all familiar with the Objectivist principle that condemns the initiation of force. What I want to explore is how (if at all) this principle creates limitations on various forms of speech. But before doing that, we should agree on a definition of force.
RadCap, is "contact" in the above definition limited to physical contact?
A nod from the left-coast

By HaloNoble6,
I've been in and out of this forum since it started but never got around to joining. Steve and David are incredibly productive with this site -- cheers to you. Anyhow, I'm a graduate student in aero/astro engineering at stanford. Looking forward to making some posts. I'll take this opt. to plug my site: www.d-anconia.com.
did you know....?

By Old Geezer,
Apparently the United States is responsible for tribal fighting that resulted in the deaths of hundreds of thousands....silly me, I would have thought it was the people doing the fighting

The Romantic Composers

By Skywalker,
Hi everyone, I'm a first time poster with a long-time interest in Objectivism, now seeking more knowledge on the subject. Having recently read the Romantic manifesto, I am comparing Rand's definition of Romanticism with the composers and writers to whom academia has given the same label. Particularly, I am speaking of Lizst, Beethoven, Chopin, Schubert, Schumann, Rachmaninoff, and their ilk. I saw in the "favorite music" thread that there are fans of these composers, so I am sure some will say t
Quick Question on Rights

By y_feldblum,
Is the principle of rights an ethical principle or a political principle; ie, which branch of philosophy deals with the concept?
Going deeper, what exactly is the dividing line between the two branches in general?
Fallujah

By Kitty Hawk,
The military was headed in the right direction in Fallujah, having cornered a large number of terrorist/guerilla fighters there, and were moving in for the kill. Then they started their inexplicable (to me, at any rate) backtracking. First, a cease fire to discuss the surrender of the combatants and especially the ones responsible for killing and desecrating the bodies of the four American civilians.
Now, we are merely asking the combatants to surrender their arms, not their persons, an
