and each person's independence is respected by all

    Hello From Czech Republic

    Vavrinec
    By Vavrinec,
Hi all, I'm student of finance and economics from Czech Republic. I've discovered objectivism during last year at high school through articles of Jiri Kinkor - great czech objectivist who translated OPAR into czech. I'm primarily interested in economics and finance and their application to investing. I work part-time as financial journalist. I enjoy good art, non fiction books and also practicing martial arts. I've spent several hours in the last few days reading some discussions on

    Pets

    By iouswuoibev,
I hope this isn't too off-topic. Are there are any people here who like/own pets? See the attached image for mine. I've yet to see the subject of humans and animals brought into an objectivist context, so I'm curious to hear what others think. I myself like many sorts of animals, but I haven't been able to apply any objectivist principles to explain why this is the case. They obviously aren't a recreation of anyones value judgements, and they don't seem to reaffirm any of my values. The ple

    Modern History

    By msb,
Can anyone recommend a good history book or books dealing with events since WWII? I am particularly interested in the 70s and 80s, though a good overview of the 50s and 60s would also be helpful. I am 22 and extremely ignorant of anything that occurred between the mid seventies and what I can remember from my early teens (mid nineties).

    Hey

    By jedymastyr,
Hello. I've been reading around the forums for awhile and figure I should introduce myself. My real name is Chad Mills, and I'm going to school at the University of Arizona (UA) in Tucson, AZ. I'm studying electrical engineering and computer science. I've completed 2 of my 4 years of undergrad, but I'm going to grad school afterward, so I don't plan on getting out of school any time soon. My parents and several friends live in Phoenix, so I tend to go back there most weekends.

    By Aesthetic Psyche,
I've been aware of this site for a while, but have only recently spent some time in the forum. I figured I'm overdue for an intro. My name is Desiree. I'm a 23-year old fine arts student at the Art Students League of New York. I love beauty and truth. I studied psychology (segued from premed with a neuro concentration) and minored in art history at Penn State. With my friends Kelly Koenig, Rick Smith, and Rafael Garcia, I ran a rather successful Objectivist club while there (7 speake

    Personal Poetry

    By AmbivalentEye,
I asked if it would be ok, to post poetry here. I recall Ayn Rand adressing her readers in the introduction and as always, she mean her writting to be read, if by any at all, then for it to be objectivists. I don't exavtly know who my audience is or whether I have one. I don't write for people. I write for myself and therefore I am constantly called arrogant. Let it be so. I know I want great minds to see the things I write and recall what was possible to the human existence: "The ability to per

    Talk About Defining With Non-essentials

    By RadCap,
http://msnbc.msn.com/id/5287945/ This supposedly serious article denigrates the remarkable achievement of man space through redefinition by NON essentials. It is a sneer piece which pretends to be benevolent and *somewhat* cheering of the astronautic achievements. According to it, man has NEVER 'really' gone into space at all. Note that the writer is from SETI. That explains alot.

    Getting Through To People

    By iouswuoibev,
I have just read a book called "Getting through to people" by Jesse S. Nirenberg, which was a recommend on Dr. Ellen Kenner's website. I am not going to quote much of it, as I think it is in your best moral interest to buy it, but here is a little excerpt to give you an idea: from the chapter "Encouraging Cooperativeness": "No matter how brilliant or witty or logical your comments are their power is lost if they fall on a resistant mind. And one reliable way to induce resistance is to show
