Objectivism Is The Everyman's Philosophy
In the universe, what you see is what you get,
figuring it out for yourself is the way to happiness,
and each person's independence is respected by all

Rand's Philosophy in Her Own Words
- "Metaphysics: Objective Reality" "Nature, to be commanded, must be obeyed/Wishing won’t make it so." "The universe exists independent of consciousness"
- "Epistemology: Reason" "You can’t eat your cake and have it, too." "Thinking is man’s only basic virtue"
- "Ethics: Self-interest" "Man is an end in himself." "Man must act for his own rational self-interest" "The purpose of morality is to teach you[...] to enjoy yourself and live"
- "Politics: Capitalism" "Give me liberty or give me death." "If life on earth is [a man's] purpose, he has a right to live as a rational being"

Elementary, Dear Watson!
By AwakeAndFree,
I noticed a post where GreedyCapitalist mentioned he had read Sherlock Holmes as a child, and it taught him what reason was.
I have had the exact same experience. I came to admire reason through reading Sherlock Holmes adventures by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. From age 8-9 to age 14 he was my greatest hero. I have all of the stories, and when I went to London a few years back I had to visit 221B Baker Street.
I wonder if that's common in Objectivist circles.
How many of you had read S
Painting and Visual Art
By Patrick,
I enjoy beautiful, life affirming art. My favorites include William Bouguereau, Raphael, and John William Waterhouse. I also enjoy contemporary artists such as Duffy Sheridan and Damon-Armand Heslington Denys.
What are your favorites? I'm always looking for more beautiful images.

By source,
Hi all.
I must have missed this section of the forum when I first came here and I never properly introduced myself. Recently there was some confusion in the discussion about where I live, so I found it a good time to finally let you know who I am.
As my sig says, I'm Nikola Novak. I own OneRight.Org, but I'm not going to talk about it here because some here have probably already heard of it. I'm from Croatia and I'm a college student. I'm studying Electric Engineering and Computing (th
Howdy
By Barstool,
Hi, my name is Jason, the nickname is Barstool, and I'm currently in Aggieland.
So, what's this place all about?
The State: My Answer
By nemethnm,
Ok, this is simple so I'll just spell it out real quick.
A country is playing a protectionist game with its industry. There are two things to notice here. The first is that the counrty is subsidizing one or more industries. In order to do this it must infringe on the rights of the people that live in that country. This means that it is a rouge state and we can invade it at any time we want to (assuming that our government is the ideal or at least better than theirs). The second point is tha
Straight Edge
By xfireworksx,
i am straight-edge and have been for my entire life. for those of you that don't know it, it's a philosophy of abstaining from drinking, smoking, drugs and promiscuous sex [and some groups add on other peripheral things, but that's the guts of it]. i have kept this lifestyle because i believe in its inherent rationality - that i don't want to put something into my system that would impair my ability to make rational judgements in any way. also, i don't want to cause harm to the only thing tha
Forum Policy On "edit" Feature For Posts?
By stephen_speicher,
I would like to have a forum-wide policy clarified on the use of the "Edit" function for postings. I personally think that the "Edit" feature, which allows editing of postings after they have been posted, should be eliminated entirely for regular forum posters. My concern is that altering a post is altering the historical record, changing facts after the facts occur. If anyone actually changes their mind about an idea or position presented in a previous post, it is a simple-enough matter to writ
Wmd
By Michelangelo,
Several questions.
1. Are there private companies that create WMD's (weapons that have the potential to kill much more then guns)
2. Are these companies only allowed to sell them to our government?
If in the future we had the ability to make WMD's affordable and accessible to individuals, should we have the right to do so? When would a person become a threat to the safety of others while it is in their possession?
If I'm correct, Ayn Rand saw that there was a differe
UN foolishness
By pvtmorriscsa,
Howdy All,
I used to argue that America was the greatest country in the world, if for no other reason than that we have the fattest poor people in the world. Well I guess the UN has determined that the newest world health problem is obesity. Check out this story.

Taxes: The Taxman And The Objectivist
By rgargan,
If the taxman demands money from me, what should I do as an objectivist? If I don't pay him then I will be sent to court. If I still refuse to pay, bailiffs will come and physically remove items of value from my home.
