    Value Judgements

    TheCerebro
    By TheCerebro,
When you first meet a person, how do you rationally access their value? Under what circumstances would you help a person who was poor or ill and unable to help themselves?

    Role of Government

    Prometheus
    By Prometheus,
A friend of mine, when we were discussing the role of a government, argued that the government has some form of basic social resposibility, like that of providing primary education to children. So i'd like to pose your'll the question of what exactly is the role of a government in a capitalist society. Does it have any form of social responsibility? Could someone also point me in the direction of how to learn more about capitalism, right from scratch. An explanation of it's principles

    Workplace safety regulations

    Apprentice
    By Apprentice,
Can anyone point me to a thread discussing government involvement in regulating safety in private businesses? I haven't been able to find quite what I'm looking for yet and am not sure if it's been discussed. I'm in an argument with someone over this and need to solidify my position a bit. Thank you--sorry if this request is in the wrong place!

    By ZiggyKD,
Hey, my name is David Sediles, student of Objectivism from Tallahassee, FL, though originally from Miami. I'm 20 and currently attend Florida State University, where I'm a mechanical engineering major. I've known about this site for a while, though I never really browsed the forum much until recently -- a couple of very interesting threads here convinced me that I should join the forum.

    Inglewood, CA votes against WalMart

    Guest bartwart
    By Guest bartwart,
It frustrates me to no end how these so-called community activists use language of class warfare and slavery into scaring people into voting against free-interprise. Capitalism improves everybody's life, including the poor, by making the pie bigger, so to speak. When will they realize that free markets are not a zero-sum game? EDIT: Whoops! This post belongs somewhere else. [Fixed - MB]

    Post-Soviet Europe

    Invictus
    By Invictus,
I’m sure you have all heard it said many times that the nations of Eastern Europe were better off under socialism. This is a misconception that has been coming up a lot lately and is in need of some attention. Even my usually respectable International Relations lecturer raised the possibility that free market reforms have had an adverse effect on the economies and people of the former Marxist experiment states. The graph below, called the liberalization Index, demonstrates the extent to wh

Hello I'm Elle. I'm a first year college student working with my Dad to run a small business in investment consulting and research. I'm geared towards an economics major at the moment, but I'm sure anyone in school knows what it feels like feeling out your major in your first year. I'm looking forward to exchanging thoughts with you. -Elle

    How the ARI recycles essays

    AutoJC
    By AutoJC,
Damnit, Peter Schwartz! Please stop recycling your essays! First, on October 6, 2003 Then, on April 8, 2004 He just changed the first sentence in the first paragraph, then all else stayed the same. Other authors there do this, too. Certainly, with the intelligent minds over there, ARI can do better than that.

new campus club site: FSU Objectivism

    ZiggyKD
    By ZiggyKD,
I thought it'd be a good idea to put something about my club's web site here as my first post. The club was just formed this January at Florida State University, and we've already got a speaker coming by - Andrew Bernstein will give a lecture on Global Capitalism in a few weeks here. FSU Objectivism I've been thinking of reworking the layout a bit, organization isn't as tight as I'd like it to be. Any thoughts?
