Objectivism Is The Everyman's Philosophy
In the universe, what you see is what you get,
figuring it out for yourself is the way to happiness,
and each person's independence is respected by all

Rand's Philosophy in Her Own Words
- "Metaphysics: Objective Reality" "Nature, to be commanded, must be obeyed/Wishing won’t make it so." "The universe exists independent of consciousness"
- "Epistemology: Reason" "You can’t eat your cake and have it, too." "Thinking is man’s only basic virtue"
- "Ethics: Self-interest" "Man is an end in himself." "Man must act for his own rational self-interest" "The purpose of morality is to teach you[...] to enjoy yourself and live"
- "Politics: Capitalism" "Give me liberty or give me death." "If life on earth is [a man's] purpose, he has a right to live as a rational being"

Why does Dagny leave Atlantis?

By F23AC,
Hey all. This is Anthony Carreras. I introduced myself in the introduction section prior to getting this registration thing down. Anyhow, I have a question I'd like to ask you all about a specific scene from Atlas Shrugged, which I am assuming most of you (if not all) have read. (Steve - I asked you this question once on IM).
The scene is when Dagny is in Atlantis, debating in her mind whether or not to stay in Atlantis or go back to the railroad. John Galt says to her, "If any of yo
People: Leo Strauss

By Atlas51184,
I was reading about Leo Strauss here and I wanted to know if anyone has any opinions of him. My knowledge is limited to what I read in this article.
My thoughts on academic vs. elective education.

By danielshrugged,
Is a vocational education in elementary through high school an example of Pragmatism? Are academic courses any better for training one's conceptual faculty than elective courses?
I wrote an article for Toronto's New Intellectual in which I argued in favor of academic over elective courses. Their editor, Andrew Lui, rejects my position. If nobody persaudes me I'm wrong, I'm going to cancel my plans to distribute the paper at my college, so a lot hinges on this. Persuade away!
I will inc
Rob's OAC class

By danielshrugged,
Fellow 1st year OAC students,
I still haven't received any further grades from Rob. This is the same with you? What the heck is taking him so long?
Why isn't there more writing on the base of O'ism?

By RationalEgoistSG,
I am currently re-reading Objectivism: The Philosophy of Ayn Rand, and I am fully realizing that Objectivist metaphysics really establish a good foundation for everything that follows.
In the majority of philosophical disputes that I've had with others concerning ethics, politics, and aesthetics, the fundamental disagreement has almost always come from differing views of metaphysics and epistemology.
I believe that Objectivist metaphysics and epistemology firmly establish the corre
Human Relations

By John,
I'm so glad I'm in a technical school and don't have to put up with many classes like this but it still bothers me. The first thing we learned about was self-esteem and how we get it:
Shouldn't self esteem come from the self. Why would other people make a difference.
Now we are learning about motivation and how as leaders we have to "wear a pathway" to motivate people to do what we want them to do. We can do this through fear or acting nice.
This is what I think. Self-este
Chrissycrunch

By Chrissycrunch,
I am a 33 year old Bostonian and discovered Objectivism about 8 years ago. I am lucky to have a boyfriend who is also an Objectivist. I work in the social services field (difficult being an Objectivist and working with Socialists!) and have three cats.
Survival and Pleasure #2

By Gabriel,
I'm starting a new thread, so it's easier to follow.
I, accidentaly, made several points in one post:
1. Pleasure is subjective, meaning that the interpretation of something as being pleasurable depends on one's individuality. I also do not think there is such a thing as "objective pleasure". Any "objective sensation" as such. Sensations in themselves do not have to conform to reality. They ARE reality. Sensations are NOT man-made, because they are automatic responses, just like emotions.
Me

By suv,

Hey,
I'm Suv from India. I stumbled upon Ayn Rand, when I was 15, in the midst of what I now know as "psycho-epistemological" confusion, caused by reading philosophers of the mystic-altruistic axis, and trying to reconcile their words to my conception of reality. ( They actually mean this is what I told myself...and paid a heavy price...last time I was trying to "understand"- 'The world is an illusion' )
I'm 19 now, and much happier, I play professional soccer, and would like to visit US
"Forthcoming calendar events" feature

By AshRyan,

Hi board users, some of you may have noticed that last week I activated a board feature called "Forthcoming calendar events" which you can see at the bottom of the main forum page, in the board statistics area. The way it works is that if there is an event coming up, you can enter it in the board calendar (the link for which is at the top of the page on the right side), and that event will be announced in the "Forthcoming calendar events" area some specified number of days in advance. For inst
