    Belated Introduction

    By Skywalker,
Hi everyone, I've been discussing things on this forum for a while, but I've never formally introduced myself. Time to remedy that. I'm a college student (soon to be a graduate student) from New Jersey, with interests in music, literature, politics and philosophy. My introduction to Ayn Rand came in my last year of High school when I read the Fountainhead to enter ARI's essay contest (in which I achieved second place out of many applicants). Since then I have, over a large period of time, r

Hello everyone! My name is Marcus, and I have finally taken the time to sign up for these forums. I have been a "lurker" for a couple of weeks now, and look forward towards actually participating in some of this sites rational discussions. I am currently a 2nd year student at Florida State University, majoring in poli sci and philosophy for my pre-law. I am also the secretary of FSU Objectivism (www.fsuobjectivism.com) Sincerely, Marcus Lange "Love is the expression of one's va

This is an issue that has been on my mind recently. Objectivism is a philosophical system that covers every area of philosophy (excpting perhaps the philosophy of law, I dont know of any objectivist theory in the philosophy of law, but Im sure some of objectivism's wider principles entail certain answers in phil. law). As an objectivist, you believe that Objectivism is 100%TRUE. That being said, it seems that if you are an objectivist then you must believe that every philosophical question ha

In many states currently there are standards which allow for indefinite commitment of an individual who is considered to pose a danger to themselves or others (though they are often brought up for review, similar to a parole hearing). This conflicts greatly with our non-napoleonic code of "Innocent until proven guilty" and there are many horror stories of individuals experiencing breakdowns and winding up in horrid mental facilities for long periods of time. Where do we draw the line regarding

Some people just shouldn't open their mouths. Excerpted from a letter to the editor at The Columbian:

Or something like that... Hi all! I'm familiar with this website and forum for quite a bit, but now I'm introducing myself. My name is Bruno Raymundo, I'm 21 years old, Chemical Engineering student, and I was born and live in Brazil. Fortunately, in one of the most well developed areas, the southern region. On the other hand, unfortunately, Brazil is walking towards a frightening path, the road to collectivism. That's why I posted this topic as People's Republic... actually it's a detu

Hi all, Yet another lurker here who’s been wondering whether to join or no . . . I guess I’m taking the plunge. A lil somethin’ about me: I’m a fiction writer, although it still feels weird to say that, as I am unpublished and have only the vaguest plans for a novel in the works. Perhaps aspiring novelist would be more appropriate, although I do have a growing collection of short stories that I am rather proud of (most days, anyway). Or maybe it should be editor by day, writer by nigh
