I've heard similar arguments (teachers vs. insert-various-professions) and it drives me mad. The reality is that it doesn't take much to be a teacher. Depending on your state, you need a Bachelor's degree and a teaching certification (sometimes not even that). In the last state I lived in, any Bachelor's would be accepted. On the other hand, in order to be a successful business-person, you need to be successful in business. Which one is harder?

Interesting points. Viewing the differences as a matter of taxonomy rather than assigning meaning or worth.

In grad school, I reached a point where I knew I would not be able to do 100% of the reading and work assigned to me. What I did was figure out exactly what had to be done and what would count for a grade, and start there. For example, so assigned reading was never tested or really monitored, or was really only used for class discussions. This is a fancy was of saying "I was a really good BSer."

I'm a little late to this discussion, but I would like to add the concept of "art vs. entertainment." That being said, I don't think there is anything wrong with enjoying either one of them.

So what happens when someone gets hurt following an OSHA standard, such as Amaroq mentioned? My first thought is that OSHA will try to make another regulation of a regulation, but what happens when a company with some muscle (Wal-Mart) pushes back? It will be interesting to see.

What a great thread. I am a grad school "survivor" and can relate to a lot of the posts here. My focus area was Shakespeare, so you can imagine the amount of reading and researching was ungodly. The stress put real, physical tolls on my body. I'm typically a healthy person; I exercise every day, eat clean, etc., but during grad school I drank a TON. As a result, my immune system was weaker and I got sick a lot. It cost me my relationship with my gf at the time. Did I make mistakes? Yes. Do I regret doing it? Not at all. It was in my self-interest to do it, and I'm glad I did. Is it possible to remain psychologically healthy while doing it? I don't know if I'm in a position to answer that.

On my last car I had a "Who is John Galt?" sticker as well as the "Enjoy Capitalism" (looks like the Coca-Cola logo) sticker. I also had a "Capitalist Inside" shirt but it doesn't fit me anymore. When I was a server, I would ring in a blank drink order that would print on the bar's ticket printer and I would type in "This is John Galt speaking..."

30 years young.

Whenever anyone comes out swearing and blathering on, I don't even bother.
