  1. There were some other strange moments in the speech. At one point I caught a glimpse of a Republican senator holding a piece of paper that looked like it had "RULES" written on it. I can only assume that was some sort of attempt to make the Dems abide by the regular senate rules and not use the budget reconciliation procedure. That procedure would allow them to put a bill through with 51 votes instead of the normal fillibuster-proof 60 votes.

  2. As a former concervative, I can assure you that the only people who think George Will is *actually* a conservative, are liberals. He's their pet conservative.

Anyone who could claim we are undertaxed, as he did during the early Reagan years, is not a conservative. But the liberals loved that comment, claiming that "even the conservatives" think we need a tax hike.

I vaguely recall that comment by Will. If I remember correctly, his point was that if Americans want large amounts of government benefits, then the government should tax them to pay for those benefits rather than borrowing the money for government handouts.

  3. Secondly, I did not make any claim that the US should have a policy of waiting to destroy a given enemy.

Ok, what action(s) are you suggesting we take?

Also, "Islamic Fundamentalism" is a rubber term, as meaningless as the term "extremist." It's floating, and undefinable.

What term would you like to use to refer to the Muslims who are actively attempting to kill us?

There are many, many, many more millions of "Islamic Fundamentalists," who are just living their lives, and are not actively planning to attack "america". There are millions who live in this country.
And there are millions of Fundamentalist Christians who are "just living their lives" in this country as well. What's your point?
  4. Beat them at what? They produce nothing. If they "win" anything, they only win by default.

Meanwhile people continue to live and prosper, whenever they use their minds.

Pro-reality, pro-reason, pro-objective values philosophy is how irrationality is blasted.

You should really check your malevolent universe premise.

As Thomas said, this isn't a situation where we can sit back and watch Islamic fundamentalism collapse under its own weight. This is a virulent and powerful ideology that appeals to millions. Many of its followers are actively attempting to kill us and destroy this country and our allies. To not respond would be suicidal. By the way, if you read what Zip posts here, you'll see that he does not hold to a malevolent universe premise.

  5. As the economy continues to flounder, it's increasingly clear that much of the money loaned to US automakers will not be repaid:

The federal government is unlikely to recoup all of the billions of dollars that it has invested in General Motors and Chrysler, according to a new congressional oversight report assessing the automakers' rescue.

The report said that a $5.4 billion portion of the $10.5 billion owed by Chrysler is "highly unlikely" to be repaid, while full recovery of the $50 billion sunk into GM would require the company's stock to reach unprecedented heights.

In all, the government has invested $74 billion in the nation's auto industry, including $12.5 billion into auto financing giant GMAC and $3.5 billion into auto suppliers, according to the report.

    http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/conte...ml?hpid=topnews

It's interesting that the government claims it has only "invested" about $74 billion into the auto industry. The figures I've seen are well over $100 billion and some estimates are nearly double the $74 billion amount.

  6. When US conservative opinion makers like George Will are calling for a pull-out from Afghanistan, it's only a matter of time. We should probably get out now, rather than in two or three years, after having spent additional billions and seeing hundreds more of our brave soldiers sacrificed.

Obama clearly doesn't have the stomach to continue this fight and his lefty base is going to turn up the heat in coming months. If anyone is good at cutting and running when times get tough, it's the American left.

  7. Wait for the accusations of racism against those who dared to raise questions about this guy.

Fox News (Glen Beck, specifically) can pretty much single-handedly take credit for exposing Van Jones. The rest of the TV news organizations either completely ignored this significant story or gave it very brief mention. The major media in this country ought to be embarassed.

  8. I think most people found the original "lesson plan" from the Dept of Education to be the most distasteful aspect of this whole episode. Parts of that lesson plan were later changed in response to parents' objections. Obama is responsible for pushing the most instrusive and expansive government agenda since FDR. So, when the DOE sends a lesson plan to schools that "suggests" teaching methods including discussing or writing about how students can help the President, the whole thing smells like Big Brother. Combine that with the Obama cult of personality and it's more than a little creepy.

  9. It's too bad that the better parts of his rhetoric don't match his legislative actions.

Also, the US Dept. of Education put out a ridiculous lesson plan for teachers to use with the speech in their classrooms. It included some crap about asking students how they think they can help the President. Booooo! :warn:

  10. Right, the dealers are already in huge trouble with tight cash flow due to low sales. Now the Clunkers program boosts their sales, but the government doesn't pay them the money due, so many of them are in even deeper cash flow trouble. When someone shows up at your door and says, "I'm from the government and I'm here to help you".... my best advice would be to run the other way.

  11. This does not surprise me. Many of these alarmist videos on Youtube and elsewhere are sponsored not by any secular organization or individual, but by Christians saying that our Christian nations are being conquered by infidels...Do not expect honesty from anyone.

I don't have access to either the necessary data or the statistical skills to determine whether these claims about Muslim population growth are true. However, it isn't just the Christian whack-jobs who are talking about this stuff. In fact, I've heard Muslim extremists make similar kinds of claims. If my memory serves, our old friend Osama Bin Laden said something to the effect that high Muslim birth rates are the ultimate weapon against the "crusaders" and the "infidels". Given the negative birth rates in some European countries, this is likely a demographic trend that shouldn't be ignored. However, I tend to doubt that it's really something to get alarmed over, at least at this time.

  12. Someone remind me exactly why we are there? Where are the anti-war protesters now?

You forgot, this is the "good war", according to them. The other one was Bush's bad war.

I'm constantly amazed and impressed by the bravery and committment of the men and women who put everything on the line to defend this country. In my estimation, they are some of the highest quality people on the planet. In fact, if I didn't think this government was so off track, I would have even encouraged my own son to enter the military. As it sits now, I can't stomach the thought of him or any of these other noble men and women making the ultimate sacrifice at the command of political leaders who are as philosophically flawed as the ones running this country.

Wrath, I hope your buddy has a complete recovery.

  13. The latest figures show Toyota as the company that has benefited the most from C4C:

CHICAGO, Aug. 14 (Xinhua) -- Three major U.S. automakers lost ground to foreign rivals in the latest tally of "cash for clunkers" sales as Toyota Motor Corp. dethroned General Motors Co. (GM) as the top seller, reports reaching here said Friday.

Toyota has sold 18.9 percent of vehicles purchased through the clunkers program, surpassing GM, which has sold 17.6 percent.

I wonder if the UAW is happy about that? :)

  14. Business groups and doctor's associations and labor union as all petitioning for the Health Care Bill, so long as they get a cut of the pie. Disgusting, but pragmatism instead of principles may make this thing pass. That it violates everyone's rights doesn't seem to be of too much concern -- just the bottom line of dividing up the spoils.

The big drug companies also decided to make a deal with the devil:

"Pressed by industry lobbyists, White House officials on Wednesday assured drug makers that the administration stood by a behind-the-scenes deal to block any Congressional effort to extract cost savings from them beyond an agreed-upon $80 billion."

    http://www.nytimes.com/2009/08/06/health/p...uzin&st=cse

This has to be one of the more disturbing examples of a pragmatism in action. The funny thing is that no sooner did the drug companies cut a deal with Obama, then the Lefties in Congress declared that they weren't going to be bound by any deal made by the White House. How's that old saying go? When you lay down with dogs.....

As usual, the Wall Street Journal has a tremendous editorial on this sleazy deal.

  15. Unless they start actually targeting the people who are the subjects of these "flaggings," then they're not exactly doing anything illegal or unconstitutional. But it's still pretty creepy and Big Brother-ish.

If my memory serves me, there is actually a federal law that was enacted in the aftermath of Watergate that prohibits the White House from even accumulating lists of names and addresses for people who oppose its policies. Given the way previous administrations have used federal agencies like the IRS to go after their "enemies", I think this sort of thing should be watched closely and opposed vigorously when possible. The Left has a history of screaming bloody murder when they even sense that the government is accumulating information on them because of their protestations against this or that policy. Odd they way they don't seem to raise a peep when it's happening to the other side.

  16. That Edmunds list is an interesting breakdown Snerd. A recent report I heard on local media claimed that the Corrola was the number one vehicle, but that is way down on the Edmunds list. In any event, this program is just another subsidy for the auto industry, piled on top of the $100 billion or so that the government has already dumped into the domestic car makers.

  17. President Obama has a vision for America that is very much like that of the European Social Democracies. Unfortunately, after years of philosophical and moral decay, I'm afraid that much of the US population shares his vision. They want something for nothing and think they can get it, despite the obvious contradiction inherent in such a proposition.

  18. FDR did similar when he ordered the destruction of hundreds of thousand of farm animals and crops in order to drive up prices for agriculture, during a depression when people were starving. Marxist/Socialists aren't known for their great foresight.

Yes, but you wouldn't know that here in Detroit, where the Cash for Clunkers program is almost universally hailed as a great success. Of course, most people crowing about the program ignore the fact that it has raised prices in the used car market, making it much more difficult to find cheap transportation. It is also, by definition, a misallocation of resources when you are taxing one group of people to give an unearned subsidy to another group. Another little interesting tidbit about the program; the most frequently bought new vehicle under Cash for Clunkers is a Toyota. I wonder how that sits with the "Buy American" union boys?

  19. All sorts of people show up there. I visit it regularly, they have an interesting compilation of news hardly available anywhere else. The comments are hardly moderated.

The level of paranoia on that site is disturbing. Also, to call PP's content "News" is a real stretch. Most of the "articles" read more like editorials from a committed band of anti-government conspiracy freaks, rather than legitimate news stories.
