  1. Thank you for posting that. A wonderful interview and yes Savage was uncharactaristically cordial but I got the definite impression he has great respect for Leonard Piekoff which was most likely the reason for the civility. Has he ever gone on Savage's show again since then, does anyone know? Btw, I was listening to his show after the London bombings last week and what was being said was EXACTLY the same as what was said during this interview after 9/11...something horrendous is going to have to happen to be able to wake people up to actually support fighting terrorism. The worst culprits for this slumber being the media and a catatonic nation which Savage calls a society driven to "shop 'til it drops." Thanks again. D
  2. Me too! Btw I DID say appearance-wise only when I mentioned him. Anyone agree on Jodie Foster as Dagny? I think she would be perfect. (I am not even going to ask for agreements on Keanu Reeves as Francisco!)
  3. I would love Jodie Foster as Dagny and for Francisco - in appearance and presence ONLY mind you! Keanu Reeves
  4. Just a quick BTW-Connecticut is known as "The Constitution State"
  5. Do we want to get into dream interpretation? I LOVE doing that! Mods-Please feel free to delete or move this post if inappropriate.... ty. c
  6. Along the same line...questions to ask oneself that I found helpful in "Philosophy: Who Needs It?"
  7. Here is a quote from "Faith and Force" in "Philosphy: Who Needs It?" which is in keeping with this subject ~d.
  8. I was responding to what you wrote about zero men being able to survive in 'such a state' Hal's post had the years humans DID survive in such a state which was for 30,000 years as opposed to humans living in a civilized state which has been for 6,000 years. d.
  9. not true-refer to this part of Hal's post ... True though, the natural survival instincts may be dormant but they still are there. D
  10. thanks! I DO have respect for Ayn Rand believe me. I also think Quinn and Jensen have their own points to make re: sustainable lifestyles vs nonsustainable but they are mired down in collectivism (see excellent post by HAL in this thread for more on this) And yes I have had a try at abandoning civilization in my own way - only working PT, cutting back on spending, doing my own cooking etc. The thing is-it is BORING (to me anyway) and I have decided that that isnt where I want to go-not a happy camper doing that stuff. So that is where I am at right now.... also in the process of looking into going back to school... d.
  11. thank you for the title-I will check it out and then think on your last question. D.
  12. Their argument would most likely be they need to stay here and spread the word that civilization is killing the planet. D
  13. *questioN(s)* apologies for the misspell D also a quick thank you for all the replies.
  14. I will supply the quotes-they will be from "Philosophy, Who Needs It?" I am asking because I was interested in the anticivilization movement and an admirer of the work of Jensen, and Quinn among others. I recently returned to my interest in Rand from my youth, recently re-finishing "The Fountainhead" and now reading the book above as well as "Atlas Shrugged" Needless to say the 2 realms of thought are VERY different therefor my questio(s) on this subject. Thank you. D.
  15. hi I am and old / new student of Objectivism having read a few anti-civilization authors (jensen, quinn) I have a question re: tribes (ie american indians, aboriginies) (I have included a link to an essay by Jensen down below to get the general idea of where he is coming from if anyone is interested-although it does not address this particular subject) these authors suggest mankind was happiest in the state of pre-civ - citing things like low incidents of murder, rape, less work hours (3 a day) and more time for play. Rand on the other hand seems to say (correct me if i am wrong) these people were savages who killed acted violently frequently. Also they felt they had no control over their own world and thought sacrifice and prayer the only small thing they could do to try and influence nature (I agree with this part) ? Where is the truth? Somewhere in between? thank you here is the link to the essay: http://www.derrickjensen.org/vio.html
  16. thank you I will read Atlas Shrugged again-just to refresh my memory and after that I'll check out "Virtue of Selfishness" also will do a search on similar threads as mentioned. D
  17. I am currently re-reading and am almost done with The Fountainhead-I read Atlas Shrugged years ago. I would very much like to further study Objectivism-which would make the most logical sense that I read next, Atlas Shrugged or something else? Also recommendations after my next book or even a reading list are welcome. Thank you. D
  18. I have read a good amount of his stuff... and although he is considered "eastern" (buddisht taoist etc) by people who really don't know his work, I think he is an Objectivist in very many ways with a lot to say - one of his writings follows with the link ~dw link here (Excessive quote was removed. Please respect copyright rules. - SoftwareNerd)
  19. i should rephrase that-superficial altruism of course is not a good thing-what is the objectivist opinion on true altruism>? thanks
  20. well i am just talking about people i know who told me they were going into those fields-of course you can expand on it like you did in your reply. you are right-you do have to dig below it-have to think on that one. what is the objectivist opinion on superficial altruism and true altrusim? forgive me on this one-i am new to the philosophy-maybe this would be better off in the question forum? thanks dawn
  21. what about altruistic careers? i know a few people who want to become psychologists or physical therapists-isnt that a good thing to help teach people to become more self sufficient? the reasons for the careers i hear are "i like helping people and seeing them overcome their difficulties" and 'i like to work with people' ?
  22. yes there is a difference in the drugs-but it is not that black and white-"legal" drug companies also manufactur drugs to escape reality (valium, xanax e.g.) and make an enormous amount of money on just the drugs that help one escape reality. i do not believe just because they make and sell "good" drugs cancels out the fact they also make and sell addictive reality-escaping ones also. do you believe it does? ty.
  23. "I don't consider the selling of drugs to be a productive or creative endeavour." so the individuals at bristolmyerssquib and pfizer et al are productive because they wear the white collar when they sell "legal" drugs? and the mcd job vs white collar is immaterial unless it is the case where whoever is in either job is fulfilling their potential no?
