  1. call him SO-crates (like from bill & ted's excellent adventure) that way it's only 2 syllables

    Shakespeare

I read the Merchant of Venice recently and I absolutely loved it. Then I saw the Jeremy Irons film version and now I love it even more because every time I think about the play I see Jeremy Irons in my mind which is a nice treat (especially at 2 am in the library). Well, I thought since Shakespeare is considered the best playwrite of all time there should be a thread devoted to him. So name your favourites or if you hate shakespeare and want to explain, do what you will
  3. Wow I totally forgot about that show! That's how all saw all the best worst old films. I'm going to have to rent that now.
  4. HEY! I know who could play Frisco! Joseph Fienness-- he's just dreamy *swoon. And if Gwen plays Dagny that'd be cool since they've already been in a film together. His eyes are too pretty. Unnaturally pretty.
  5. You just reminded me about Shenandoah. I don't know if it's already been mentioned but it's a 1965 Jimmy Stewart film. I've heard good things.
  6. The speech was the climax. Galt said out loud to everyone in the world the very things the badies were trying to avoid saying in explicit terms. Their power (the badies) came from the fact that they never identified what they were doing. When Galt said it out loud, the game was over. Dagny got the point right then (if I remember correctly). Galt couldn't have said anything else-- it made good plot sense (not just philosophic sense). The speech was completely necessary. What made Galt the hero was his ability to understand exactly what was happening in the world--the motivation and effectiveness of the badies' actions. It wasn't Rand making a speech remember--it was Galt, the character. Everything after the climax followed as a result of it.
  7. Thanks Scott! And congrats by the way on getting hitched
  8. Hopefully now people will wake up and start thinking up ways to help humans deal with climate changes that might occur instead of trying to stop the inevitable.
  9. A colleague of an acquaintance trades in stocks uses a program that apparently "does most of the work for him" (I’m quoting my acquaintance) He picks stocks and the software apparently tells him if he should buy sell or hold. A couple of question about this: Do programmes like this work? Is it recommended for newbies to trading? Am I better off doing something else? I want to start investing and I have a little bit of capital to play with.
  10. This made me think about the name "Dominique". It is similar to the word dominant and its variations -- I wonder if anyone can theorize a possible connection?
  11. I accidentally hit Null Vote, but I would have voted for Washington. Though I hesitated when I saw Jefferson-- I just watched an episode of Bullshit where they had this great quote of Jefferson's: "Government big enough to supply you everything is big enough to take everything you have.... The course of history shows that as government grows, liberty decreases". ~Thomas Jefferson But as I said, I'd still vote for Washington.
  12. I have to disagree with that. A service that really protects mens' rigths will attract good conscientious officers. A service that doesn't will attract men who do not think and that service will fail to do much of anything. Good officers lend credibility (politicians can point to them as evidence of their success) to a bad service and confuse the public.
  13. She says she once hired a hitman to kill her. The guy talked her out of it though.
  14. I think the problem with AS in terms of its adaptability for the big screen is that there are many many sub-plots/sub-themes. The movie will have to be presented (if it's to be in one movie alone) in essentialised form. I can't say now how it would be essentialised but I'm guessing a lot of characters will be cut -- for instance Cheryl I'm betting won't make it into the film. I can't imagine what other liberties will be taken. It's a very difficult task and I don't envy the people working on it. It should be done the way lord of the rings was, and even then peter jackson had to cut out a lot of story from the books.
  15. http://imdb.com/title/tt0480239/ YAY (i hope someone else hasn't already noted this-- the fact that imdb finally has made a board for AS)
  16. That reminds me of a short story I just started working on. A pretty complex plot so far about a married couple of spies (this started out as an exercise on a clicheed plot, which I was trying to see if I could make more interesting, which I believe I've done) well in short the government shifts and become corrupt and many spies leave the service (the main characters husband included). The main female believes she can make up for all the injustices if she can become the head of the agency. Her husband returns after disappearing for many years (remarried to a foreign diplomate) and accused of being a traitor. She has to stop the man she loves (condemning him to life in prison or possible death) from committing a crime which could criple the country's economy, or she could choose to help him and loose everything she's been working for. Of course he ultimate deciding factor in all this is which is the just option. Her husband of course will make the decision clearer for her in the end. I'm also thinking about adding another man into the mix, someone who like the main female desires justice, but like her is confused on exactly the best way to apply justice. This is a very sparse version of the plot, with sub-plots and a few characters ommitted (the theme is the importance of applying justice consistently in all facets of life) Is that anything new or something any of you would be interested in reading (bear in mind that your answer will have no bearing on whether or not I write it)? Personally I just really wanted to write it because, well hell I love a good spy story and I'm really excited to write about the husband character. PS: what happened to spell check? I'm paranoid now thta im macking all thees spelling errors. (jk )
  17. Well I figured there could be just general talk about this book which I must say is one of the prides of my bookshelf. Anyway I have kind of a very specific question about the text if anyone has read it and can remember: I believe when talking about plot or plot-theme Rand makes mention of a plot in which a lawyer must prosecute the woman he loves....I believe this is in Art of Fiction. Can anyone tell me where in the text this is because I can't find it and I am writing a story that has a plot somewhat similar to that and I'd like to re-read that passage but can't fin it in the text anywhere. Thanks
  18. i must have been retarded tired when I wrote that post I did above. Well, file it under most admirable people in the world today.
  19. My vote's for Margaret Thatcher. Longest serving PM in the UK's history (besides Blair now that he's been voted in for a third time) Here's something of what Wiki had to say about Maggie's politics called Thatcherism: Thatcherism is characterised by a free market economy perhaps more closely associated with Victorian Liberalism in the United Kingdom, monetarist economic policy, privatisation of state-owned industries, low taxation, opposition to trade unions, nationalism, centralism, as well as checks on the size of the Welfare State and local government. Thinkers closely associated with Thatcherism include Keith Joseph and Milton Friedman. Thatcherism may be compared with Reaganomics and Rogernomics. Retrieved from "http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thatcherism And here's some quotes: If you set out to be liked, you would be prepared to compromise on anything at any time, and you would achieve nothing. Disciplining yourself to do what you know is right and importance, although difficult, is the highroad to pride, self-esteem, and personal satisfaction. Europe was created by history. America was created by philosophy.
  20. Politeness for me always had a connotation of "tact over truth" in which case you're doing yourself no favours by being tactful instead of honest with people. For me the best was to be polite is just not to verbalise my thoughts when in a group discussion. When I'm being directly questioned or in a one-on-one conversation I am just as blunt as I can be--direct and honest. For the people I consider evil, who I still see and for some reason or another they still think of me as a friend, I don't tell them to piss off when I see them, but I don't stand there and ask them about their lives. Don't be overly concerned with politeness--it's over rated and you are just liable to let Politeness win over truth and honesty.
  21. http://www.space.com/missionlaunches/050920_mgs_update.html HAHA. So much for that argument towards global warming.
  22. While I don't know specifically how much energy one turbine provides I have a source that states: In order to equal the amount of power produced by a 1,000-megawatt nuclear power plant, a solar park would have to take up 35,000 acres, and a wind farm would require 150,000 acres. In contrast, a 1,900-megawatt nuclear power plant only needs 500 acres to operate. (http://www.gale.com/index.htm) and just for fun: Deaths related to energy production: In the United States, not one death resulted from nuclear energy; not one injury occurred because of nuclear energy (http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/pages/frontline/shows/reaction/maps/chart1.html). (chart shows how many have died in the coal/oil industries)
  23. someone else also noted that the birds may be more likely to hit the building because the lights are off and they can't see them. I don't know if that's true or not but it's still pretty damn funny. I bet the people who support this kind of stuff also support wind turbines for energy even though those kill thousands of birds.
