  1. Quick question here : Lets suppose I was to start off a philosophical conversation about location with this : " [ stuff here ] ... claimed that I said that the Law of Identity ( LOI ) implies *where* an object is. " I would think that one would logically assume I meant physical , tangible entities and that I was excluding things like ideas. Right? Because I thought that normally object was defined to refer to "physical, tangible entities. So unless I somehow indicated that I meant "obje...

  2. "The most dangerous part of a gecko is its mind!" - Martin Crane. Hehe. I am sure that is what its prey think as the gecko lures it into traps using stuff it ordered from Acme.

  3. All of you that are subscribed to email updates from the ARI should have received ( or will soon receive ) an email from Yaron Brook talking about their new Digital Initiative! "This means we must become world-class at utilizing the technology of the 21st century. .... That’s why ARI has launched a capital campaign to upgrade our technology not only to create a world-class digital presence today, but also to incorporate future technological breakthroughs." They are asking for contributions...

  4. Can anybody explain what the following is meant to mean? "Michael Shermer: “In all of science we’re looking for a balance between data and theory" ( see below for my comment where I explain why this seems to make no sense to me )

  5. I still need to decide on a name for a periodical on the philosophy of science ( the first issue of which should be due out at some point in October). Any reasonable suggestions would be appreciated.

  6. "It's true that science gives an approximation of reality, or a best fit with given data, and is not in fact an absolute description of reality." "That's indisputable. So how is it that someone who has a reverence for the knowledge of reality can say that it is not necessary to study science? " [ the context is that this person thinks Ayn Rand and others should have felt morally obligated to have a solid grasp of the 'hard" sciences such as physics, chemistry, mathematics, biology and so for...

  7. "What will happen to the world now, without her anger?" - George Reisman, at Ayn Rand's funeral. Indeed

  8. "The difference between the good guys and the bad guys is whether they use human shields or they make themselves the human shields" [ this is in the context of war apparently ] So apparently the differentiating factor between a good person and a bad person is which of the following alternatives one chooses : Acting like some sort of cartoon villain that sacrifices everyone to yourself or acting like a martyr and killing yourself instead. Thanks for providing us with a third alternative,...

  9. FB : Why on why are you rushing out FB "features" that do not seem to work on the most current version of Firefox available on common platforms ( the most current if you include only the version the given platform officially supports and including development/ testing builds)? | Come on, that is TWO things that just dont work at all in in FF anymore. One of them did not work in Chrome either.

  10. Me in response to a religious person claiming that morality and religion go hand in hand and that she is worried about me denying it : "Nah, I am not worried in the least. As far as I am concerned delusions and morality do not go "hand and hand together". I might as well do stuff and then claim my cat told me to, it makes more sense. At least my cat is *real*." I can be so "mean". :D

  11. "When [some charitable organization] donates, Auckland gains" This implies a failure to grasp the most elementary of economic principles. See the comment below.

  12. can someone help me? Can I turn off Facebook Spotify notificatoins when someone listens to Spotify via FB? The constant status updates everytime someone puts a new song is very annoying, yet I do not want to block the person that is listen to Spotify!

  13. one employee recruited, just however many more I need to go! :D

  14. It has been suggested that maybe neutrinos dont travel faster than the speed of light! Maybe they take "extra-dimensional shortcuts" in order to avoid traveling at the speed of light. How much more dumb can these "physicists" get if they are going to take this seriously? Rather than question the validity of the "result" ( which is a reasonable thing to do, as the "result" is based on HIGHLY dubious statistical analysis) or accept that modern physics will need tweaking : They continue to...

  15. Look : Regarding the recent news that the speed of light may not be absolute : 1) Nothing has been proven yet, the whole thing is based on stastical analysis of results and is not definitely confirmed. 2) It is not true that as much of modern physics as is generally claimed would become as invalid as is wildly thought. For instance, the equation e=mc^2 will still hold. It has been proven to hold ( at least approximately) , it it did not then nuclear bombs and nuclear energy would not work...

  16. "There is nothing more enthralling, exhilirating, and cathartic than the organic, exuberant, effervescent behaviors that are released when you are thoroughly conditioned into public apathy. There is a whimsical joy in walking up to a complete stranger and speaking seriously to them: "I have something very important to tell you: Dave Chappelle is the granddaughter of Jesus Christ"." - WTH? I do not even know what exactly this suggests, but I am deeply disturbed by it.

  17. Apparently even some "erudite" people are unaware what the word "erudite" means! I hope this is not so common, else I might need to change the name of my publishing business!

  18. Those that damn money ( and I don't mean mere paper "money" ), damn the objective means by which value is to be exchanged. The alternative to money is either the poverty of primitive barter economies or the rampant economic unpredictability and gradual destruction of real wealth which run rampant in todays economies.

  19. "Courageous Restraint" - what a joke :/ Nobody that wants to win a war / understands how to win one would be able to utter those words together in such a context. Might as well send a memo to the enemy reading "Hey, not really trying to kill ya, just taking pot shots. No hard feelings?" ( quoting myself here from another FB thread).

  20. "Existence contains everything, so since it is finite, it cannot contain infinity in any way." see my previous post about infinity. Qua valid concept, it does not claim infinity exists qua infinity, it refers to a potential / a mathematical tool.

  21. "Kane, supporting the views of another is always a second hand activity. Making them your own, and then sanctioning them in another is the correct method." - another lowlight from the mouth of the same clueless person. By this logic, it is "second hand activity" to agree with anything anyone else says. It is "second hand activity" to accept what they say, EVEN IF one understands their arguments and the basis in reality for those arguments themselves. Extremely bad reasoning there.

  22. Anyone here got a Brother HL-2140 ( or any other similar model) laser printer that they have tried to make work in Linux? I am pretty sure mine used to, but now it just spits out blank pages ad infinitum and I am not sure what is wrong. Seems to be a hardware fault...

  23. 14 year old girl gets pregnant. She then blames sex education class. Riiight, cause I guess she never knew about sex before that and her peers never ever talk about such things and never watches TV, or listens to the radio and lives in a cave on Mars. *rolls eyes*.

  24. The government is not just out to get BIG business, but all businesses : The Alcohol Reform Laws which are meant to include measures to "crack down" on large alcohol retailers, also hit small wineries hard. They are now required to go through expensive licensing for public alcohol sale. The government knows it severely punishes these small businesses, but it claims it would be too expensive to exclude them from the licensing laws. Even though exemptions already exist and would still exist.

  25. More info on the Windows 8 Developer Preview : It looks like MS is finally starting to listen more when it comes to things some people have been complaining about for a while. See the comments below :
