  1. Actually, my friend has the CD...its not as good as seeing it, but I think that the music stands alone. I did enjoy those episodes, they were very chilling. Joss Wheldon is a wonderful creator. I can't wait for Serenity!
  2. FYI - If you are reading the notes, each numbered point corresponds to each slide. Sorry for the typos!
  3. Yes, I believe that I was thinking of "niggarrd" as well
  4. I recently gave a presentation on the Weimar Culture in Germany in my history class at my college (I am taking part time classes there in addition to High School). The time length was 30 minutes, and I relied heavily on "Ominous Parallels". I can't attach the presentation (its too big), but here are the notes I used. Send me a message if you want to see the .ppt! weimar_pres_notes.doc
  5. Cut the hostility, geez! Clearly, the purpose of this thread is to understand whether a rational person would even use that word in normal speech! HELLO!
  6. I firstly want to thank all who have posted so far. Here are some clarifications. My father's edicts will and do not become rules for my life. I have wanted to be inolved in the criminal justice field ever since I was little. I am going to be a lawyer. I take the previous post questioning my rationality as insulting. My post was not asking any of you whether or not I should be a lawyer; my question was to how hard it will be for me.
  7. I have been listening to music off the website "Music with an Ayn Rand Connection", and have been really enjoying it. The songs are all in .rm format, and that is not compatible with my iPod (dismuke, the admin there, encourages people to download the songs of the server). Does anyone know how to change this format to .mp3 or.wav? I already tried emailing him, but its been a month or so and he hasn't responded.
  8. I have thought about its and am convinced. Happiness is a "state of conciousness", not an emotion.
  9. 1. A relatively large group of people organized under a single, usually independent government; a country. 2. The territory occupied by such a group of people: All across the nation, people are voting their representatives out. 3. The government of a sovereign state. 4. A people who share common customs, origins, history, and frequently language; a nationality: “Historically the Ukrainians are an ancient nation which has persisted and survived through terrible calamity” (Robert Conquest). 10. I am a senior in HS, but I am graduating in a few months. I have read nearly all of AR's works. I, in fact, tried to start an Objectivist club at my school a few years back. It was a dud. I encourage you guys to try and form those clubs at your schools. ARI is extremely supportive of its clubs and supplies them with any video tape/audio cassette lectures you need.
  11. Don't you consider the NA people a nation?
  12. I am thinking about becoming a lawyer as well. Any tips? My father tells me I should major in the math or sciences, because majoring in a liberal arts field (history, english, etc.) won't help me in the long run, because I won't be able to be a lawyer anyway (too many as it is, as he puts it). Any merit to lack of jobs?
  13. It was an incredible musical. Xander couldn't sing as well either.... Good observations!
  14. I don't know...I am a bit hesitant to say colonialism is positive. Granted, when the transaction was voluntary (NA selling/trading land or becoming citizens), it is very good. But are you guys suggesting that as long as a nation has not used the land to its potenial, its okay to attack them and take their land? I would disagree.
  15. Are you asking me? I don't know, to be honest.
  16. That is terrific! I wish I had met some of you a few years back...What have you guys read of AR? (Welcome to the forum, Outlaw289!)
  17. I agree. What about colonialization of Africa then? Would you call that an injustice overall? Did not, for example the Egyptians, create and produce a lot? What is a standard way of applying the aforementioned idea?
  18. I don't understand how you are not contradicting yourself here. I agree with you that a concept is a referent, not what people make of. But what makes a words "okay" or "not okay", if the distinction is made between connotation and definition? If (and I'll accept you definiton) n-gger means simply "a black person", why is it not "okay" to use it, if the definition holds up?
  19. What determines a people's right to land?
  20. Interesting. So you think it was more of a net benefits issue?
  21. Oh come on...I am giving you verbatim quotes from their works. I have nothing of AR, but the book "The Enemies of Christopher Columbus" written by Thomas Bowden is in essence a defense of this. Are you doubting what I am saying is correct? I would imagine as an Objectivist such is common knowledge.
  22. Define "state of consciousness" please.
  23. I have a very difficult question which I have been unable to answer. Is Colonialism moral? I define colonialism as follows: "Colonialism is the extension of a nation's sovereignty over territory and people outside its own boundaries, often to facilitate economic domination over their resources, labor, and often markets. The term also refers to a set of beliefs used to legitimize or promote this system, especially the belief that the mores of the colonizer are superior to those of the colonized." (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Colonialism) Imperialism? - "Imperialism is a policy of extending the control or authority over foreign entities as a means of acquisition and/or maintenance of empires, either through direct territorial or through indirect methods of exerting control on the politics and/or economy of other countries. The term is used by some to describe the policy of a country in maintaining colonies and dominance over distant lands, regardless of whether the country calls itself an empire." (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Imperialism) 3 Questions: 1. AR has stated (and Thomas Bowden) that the removal of Native Americans was moral. Now, whether one considers this colonialism or not, was it moral? 2. British hegemony in India, "The Scramble for Africa", "The White Man's Burden" -> (Rudyard Kipling's invention); were these moral in general? 3. If/if not for the cases listed, when is it moral?
