  1. I enjoyed these, thanks for posting!
  2. Way to go! I am also a fan of Handel's Messiah. Despite the religious subject matter, it always seemed to me to be very life-affirming (though I've not analyzed it carefully). e.g. The hills shall be made low, the valleys shall be paved... or something like that. :-)
  3. No, that was Henry Galt.
  4. Not to mention, lecturing us at length on Buddhism. NO THANKS!
  5. If you sleep with her, you will be sanctioning the way she has treated you, and she will be conquering you.
  6. I don't know of any other sources of information on this, but I'm sure they are out there. I remember reading that this program is very popular among foreign students learning English, so I imagine it's good for rote memorization. But keep in mind that memorization is not a replacement for understanding.
  7. I'm glad that you're trying it. Do let me know how it goes. Here is the article I read about it, pretty fascinating: http://www.wired.com/medtech/health/magazi...k?currentPage=1 I would recommend that article to pretty much anyone who looks at this post - again, it's fascinating.
  8. I also really enjoyed this, so thanks, Dan. I hope you do not mind that I have PDF'd it (for personal use only) so I can easily refer to it later.
  9. I just created #osmonline on irc.freenode.net. It belongs to my IRC screen name. Let me know if this is/is not helpful, and if I can help in any other way.
  10. Only for a rational person. You would need to add this to your premises in your logical equation. But then, there are tons of things you would need to add to your premises in your equations. They just randomly start from nowhere and randomly lead to nowhere. This is why they are rationalistic. Ultimately, Objectivism is based on the observation of reality. You cannot deduce it from a set of axioms. You must induct from things you observe in reality. Mathematical equations can't capture this kind of thinking; they end up missing the induction part and thus are rationalistic. Mathematics is better suited to deduction. Note, of course, that I'm no professional philosopher. But this is my best explanation of the issue.
  11. Welcome to the forum. Looks like you've gotten a really good start.
  12. You don't get anything extra by trying to use mathematics. Language is precisely precise enough to communicate fully what needs to be communicated. That conclusion is certainly incorrect. Some people value things outside of, above, and independent of their own lives. For example, suicide bombers. However, this does not pose a problem for Rand's philosophy. Those people are simply irrational. I admire your attempt to be mathematically rigorous, but you're making it harder than it is.
  13. I like the new interface a lot better, and it seems to be working great. However, I really wish I could connect with IRC. (For those who are not familiar, this basically allows you to connect to a chat room through your regular instant messaging client, perhaps the one you use to connect to AIM, MSN, Yahoo! Messenger, etc.) I always have my instant messaging client open, so being able to connect with that (through IRC) would allow me to be in the chat, or at least take note of it, any time on my computer. It would make it really convenient to join in on chats or just ignore them. I imagine there are a few other tech savvy people who share my sentiments. I know I talked to softwareNerd about this once, but I don't remember what came of that conversation. I'm fairly sure there are AJAX front ends for IRC channels out there.
  14. I hope you've considered that carefully. There are a lot of benefits that come from having a college degree, and if you're an English major, you should have plenty of time to study whatever you want in addition to completing your coursework.
  15. Here's something that helped clarify the issue for me: http://www.dianahsieh.com/blog/2004/08/fab...urgeon-and.html
  16. Generally, I think memory is less important than other thinking skills. However, you might try something a little fancier than memorizing cards: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SuperMemo I read an interesting article on that system from a respectable journal of some sort (don't remember which one, you could probably Google it). You say the job market is not being kind after college. What is your major?
  17. Wrong. Every time you throw something, you convert chemical energy in your body into kinetic energy and friction. Energy is conserved.
  18. GC now owns objectivismonline.com and it now directs to this website, so having this conversation is now pointless.
  19. Don't rise to the bait, guys... just let the mods delete it when they wake up.
  20. One of my favorite writers, Paul Graham, recently posted a short essay called How To Disagree. Here is his introduction to the piece: His disagreement hierarchy is really interesting, and probably would even be useful in considering many disagreements on OO.net.
  21. That's pretty damn impressive for a computer-generated image. I can't imagine how much effort it would take to perfect the skills needed to make something like this... but I'm glad there are people out there like you who are doing it!
  22. Je ne sais pas, but I bet ARI would be able to tell you all about French translations of Atlas and where to find them if you e-mailed them.
