I always had a hard time agreeing with this a squared times b squared equals c squared. if it's a right triangle with both sides 2 or 3 or 4 etc. the hypotenuse will be 2 or three or 4 according to this theory, but that CAN'T be. can it? so I never liked this theory as you can tell I am not a professor

oh, no no no, I never said it was not a REAL or RATIONAL number, only it's not a number you can really measure with. I mean take a unit: a unit or 4 units of the same size - basically a whole number or even not a whole number, but a number that does not have an infinite decimal. the answer IS 3,6 and 4,4. these ARE the only ones that work. but why is that? WHY? and I don't agree that 4.0000 is the same as 2.66666 because an infinite number of zeros is still zero. and 4 will be on the fourth dot of the ruler, or exactly four candies or clap 4 times. but 2.666666666666666666666666666666666666666666666666666 if you look at the hyperbula, it's like 0.999999999999999999999999999999999999999999 it almost gets to 1 but it never really gets there. it never really touches that point. it keeps getting closer, closer, closer, but NEVER touches that point. edit: now tha tI read all my previous posts, you are right, I did say that these # are not real or rational. sorry, as Steve said, I mis labled these numbers. what I meant was Whole Numbers. so the only whole # that work ARE 3x6 and 4x4.

actually, this was the answer I was hoping my son would give. (!) 4x4 and 3x6 these are the ONLY rational numbers that work on a rectangle where the area will equal the perimiter. the most important question that follows that, is what my son hadn't yet figured out, is WHY are these the only possible answers? why can no other rectangle equal the perimiter # with the area #? no, but I showed it to him, it's not hard to understand. when he says that there are only four sides in a square, and therefore the perimiter will be times 4, I flipped out a pencil and showed him how it works with algebra.

OK, ok, let me rephrase: can the NUMBER of square (inches) in the area ever equal the NUMBER of flat (inches) of the perimiter (of the same rectangle)? as you already saw, 4x4 works. Steve D'Ipolito also, x cannot equal 8 by 63/3 what's 63/3? 21, no? so the rectangle you are talking about is 8x21? the area doesn't equal the perimiter of that rectangle. so therefore x cannot equal 8.

before I answer you, I want you to know that teachers make more money than firemen or policemen. now, I have another question: if the city gets 12 million dollars for education every year, and there are only 2 or 3 million children in public schools, why is the teacher's union STILL complaining? NOW to answer your question: the schools need to get PRIVATIZED that's the only answer.

hey you lost me with the factoring. I know the square one is easy, because the equation would be 4x=xsquared 4x would be the perimiter because there are 4 sides to any square. the x squared wold be the area. the only possible number is 4. even my son understood that. BUT when I did 2x+2y=xy I couldn't get anywhere with that... I mean, I devided by x and got 2y/x=y but then what happened to the other 2? so I'm lost. help! Oh, and I forgot how to factor... is it like doing 2x+2y and changing it to 2(x+y) ? also, x cannot equal 8!

Hi, people. I presented my 9 year old son with this question. he couldn't answer it. he went t ohis math teacher who couldn't either answer it. NO ONE in his school could answer it, not even the eighth grade teacher. Why do you think? the question: Find the area of any rectangle then find the perimiter. can the area ever equal to the perimiter? if it does, which rectangles would equal? why those particular ones? my son (a fourth grader) was coming home with homework like "find the area of this, find the perimiter of that" the teacher should have known the answer, no? he's TEACHING the subject! whadaya think?

The problem is that the limit will NEVER equal 1. it will just keep approacing it. because there is no limit. it's infinity. this is what sucks about these decimal #s with the bar on top (namely repeating decimals) it's likeyou're ALMOST there... that is not what I said. I do accuse Hillary of being a socialist and a host of other things SHE does and says. There is a BIG difference between taking everything you hear about a candidate you hate with a grain of salt and "not accusing" big difference. you seem to take everything said about giuliani as fact, and that is simply wrong. Of course I don't ONLY listen to what comes out of a candidate's mouth, otherwise I'd vote for Bob Grant. I look at their history. the ARCHIVED history of all their accomplishments, and you bet Giuliani accomplished ALOT. not everyone liked him for that, but if you are someone who actually stands up and does something, chances are youll be hated by someone or other. speak for yourself. you're the one who believes that everything he's asked about issues he answers "nineleven" I determine the validity of the informmation according to the history that I clearly remember. whoa. You see how desperate his opponents are getting? who's idea was it to create a command center in case of emergency? people made fun of him for worrying so much about terrorism, and that he even wanted to open a comand center in the first place. he wanted the command center close to the twin towers because he knew they were a target (1993 bombing ring a bell?) how was he to know they'd actually succeed in throwing down all those buildings? Well, it's obvious that you REALLY dislike Mayor Giuliani, and that I REALLY like him. Hmm, this should make a good debate. I just wish you'd stop listening to the media and start listening to him. I hear many things against Hillary, but I understand that the republicans are just talking dirty about her because they don't like her. In fact, I believe he just repeated what the liberal media has been trying so hard to establish for ages. In other words, This is an 'old joke' where are these jokes coming from? what are they trying to accomplish? they are not even true! Giuliani talks least about septebmer 11 compared to the other candidates, he hardly ever mentions it, and definately not the way THEY make it sound... just listen to the republican GOP debates, you'll see for yourself. Maybe it's because they are afraid that he already got so much attention for being the leader during those terrible attacks? so they are trying to undermine it by making it sound like it's the only reason people might vote for him - forget his years as attorny general when he got the mafia. forget the city he cleaned for 8 years. forget the tax cuts and tax breaks and all the money he saved NewYorkers. all he ever did was get photographed near the WTC. so he is not qualified for presidency. but is this tactic fair? can they make jokes about such a terrible tragety - and get away with it? and is it fair of them to laugh about a man who lost so many loved ones in those horrific attacks? why isn't anyone saying anything? It's painful for ME to hear these jokes, and I didn't even lose friends in the towers, and I didn't even work hard to clean the city. What must Rudy Giuliani feel when he hears jokes about the most painful experience of his life - having worked his entire life to clean the city, first from mafia crime as an attorny, then as Mayor - and having lost close friends he's grown up with? I wish the democrats find a better way to fight in their campaign. It breaks my heart to see what they are resorting to now.
