  1. Assuming there was very little risk on your part, you didn't know the mugee, and had nowhere to be. what comes to mind is the furnace scene of AS. Fransisco had no moral obligation to help, but he did anyways, and I would say that improved fransisco in my eyes at the time. I would think more of a man who would help, in the above circumstances, than the man who wouldn't.
  2. I have been thinking of this topic lately too. What I would like to know, is what the "proper" reaction would be in the following situation: Walking down the a street, you see a man getting mugged. If you have a decent way of defending yourself, therefore its low risk, would it be wrong to ignore the situation, and let the man get mugged? Would it be the proper thing to help him? I see two arguements, and both seem valid to me. The first would be the typical Objectivism stance, that you have absoloutely no obligation to help anybody. That would mean helping would be optional, not a necesity. On the other hand, It just seems wrong to let evil win like that. You could be putting yourself in danger by not stopping the criminal. WWJGD?
  3. As dumb as both sides of the argument of gay marraige are, it kind of makes sense that the gay rights people are doing this. It reminded me of the John Galt strike; the public proclaimed that the heroes of the world were not needed, so the heroes obeyed the creed and left.
  4. I did this with a guy I was interested in. He gave me some crap by kurt vonnegut with huge undertones about meaningless existence, while I gave him atlas shrugged. We did this in october and he still hasn't finished it. He definately is intelectuall, but it turned out that he was just as flaky.

    Global Warming

My solution for global warming is for mankind to learn how to create a new ozone layer. Its a much easier solution than controlling polution.
  6. This reminds me of A Picture of Dorian Gray. For those of you who haven't read it, a boy gets a portrait done and wishes that he could forever look as the painting does, and the painting could age. By some way, it happens. He does all these horrible things and nobody believes such a pretty face could do such cruel things. By having his sins show upon the paining, he has no sense of remorse, for nothing really effects his life. Since there are no consequences, he comes to hating his life and kills himself by stabbing the painting. I highly doubt lengthening youth would have these effects on people who don't have serious psychological problems though.
  7. Theres one of these in my neighborhood, and it just moved over a block from an old theatre to a funeral hall. I found that extremely amusing.
  8. I told this feminist, who also happened to be dating my ex, "If you are so for equality, why don't you just go work in construction? The sexes are already equal in every other area!" She told me she wanted to slap me
  9. This guys flawed thinking is the fact that he doesn't make the effort to think. Exposure to the right ideas can inspire a person to think. I would define the "right" idea as thinking for oneself. If a person is irrational, meaning they make no effort to think, most, if not all of their ideas come from their environment. So assuming a person is not rational, and is not exposed to the "right" ideas, he is bound to believe any ideas set forth.
  10. I posted an entry in my LJ about this quote I found about "coming alive." I couldn't find the quote, but it was something like: "The best day of your life is the day you learn to live for yourself." This guy who I had previously thought was pretty intelligent replied with this: Its hard for me to believe that people actually think like this. I would say a large part of this problem is just lack of exposure to the right ideas.

    My art

Heres something of mine. Like it?
  12. So...Say I buy a cd. This cd gets broken in some freak accident. Would it be immoral to illegaly download that same cd to replace the broken one? On the no side: I already paid for it, so why should I have to pay twice? On the yes side: It is taking profits from whatever band or company who produces it. If I want the music so badly, I shoudl have to buy another cd.
  13. That makes more sense, because my TF and WTL both say that.
  14. On my copies of a bunch of Ayn Rand books, it says that its the centennial edition. (see title...) I am wondering why its the centennial, when most of the books have been in print 50-70 years. Anybody want to relieve my curiosity?
  15. mweiss: I am 15 and I am paying income taxes! Its about 10% and I get most of it in my tax return(taxation without representation!). I have to mention the irony: I would be working more hours (more $ for government), but its illegal! Limiting hours is also a lose lose situation, for me and the government.
  16. I was recently in your situation. To put it shortly, my history teacher is an idiot. I used to debate with him on many of the things he said. I argued pretty dang good, but no matter what I said he turned around. I remember once, this is when the arguing was at its worst point, he said that there are other types of force other than physical. I said physically was the only way to force someone into doing something. Later, he said: "Well, if you seriously believe the only type of power is physical, theres no point in arguing." This kind of pissed me off, he twisted my words. But I think it was that day that I learned to no longer care about whether I won or lost the debates. I truly do like debating, but at that point, I was doing it primarily to prove him wrong, whereas now I do it because I like to debate. You have to learn not to focus on other people.
  17. In TRM, Rand says that even if you don't agree with a piece of art, you can still like it for the way it is portrayed. ie. the sistine chapel. I don't agree with it, but I see beauty in how it was painted. The same concept does apply to movies. And don't ask me where it says that because I don't have the book. bri
  18. I LOVE HOUSE!!! I cannot emphasize it enough. The plot is wonderful, Hugh Laurie is a wonderful (and incredibly sexy) actor, and the dialogue is entertaining. House is such an individual, if there is ever a new version of TF, I want Hugh Laurie to be Howard Roark.
  19. I'm resurecting a dead topic here... Worst movie ever made: Sin City My cousin practically begged me to watch it. The whole movie was incoherent violence. All I remember was a completely lawless society, angry killing, and Bruce Willis falling in love with a stripper at least 25 years younger than her. It is still beyond me why anyone, even someone as "depraved" as my cousin, could stand watching it more than once, let alone actually enjoy it. It was the perfect example of what a good movie should not be.
  20. I'm not sure this is an Objecitivist joke, but its one of my personal favorites. (its also auite juvinile...) YOU: knock, knock THEM: Whos there? You run away, fast, and once a good distance away, yell: Doorbell ditcher!!
  21. It actually doesn't. I was kind of suprised myself.
  22. Can a state or county law be declared unconstitutional? And how would one go about it?
  23. I forgot to post my other occupation... I buy candy at costco for .35 a piece and sell it for a dollar at my high school. I make at least 30 bucks a week. I even have people working under me. I funded it to pay for my weekends so I can save all my paychecks. I'm such a capitalist!
  24. I can see how it would benefit one to be irrational, but only in an EXTREMELY extremely horrible situation. For example, a man is living in communism. If he followed the rational thought process, he would be incredibly unhappy. It would be almost better for him to be like Andrei in WTL. It would be better for him to think that there is hope, and that he is doing good, than realizing that he faces a horrible situation. I, in that case, would choose to be ignorant over blissful.
  25. Jeez BoldStandard keeps beating me to post things... Well first off, I would control the whole thing... That would be a great government... I would... -Outlaw income tax -along with welfare and compulsory social security -Have a mandatory IQ test for political candidates (must be at least... 110, maybe more) -voters must pass some sort of test, to verify that they are not just following all the propaganda. It would ask basic questions about the major candidates beliefs and policies. -more laws limiting governments power. -much less interference with private property
