  1. This conversation reminds me of a book I read, I'm okay, You're Okay by Thomas Harris (not the horror writer...). What he said is that there are three parts of the brain, the parent, the child and the adult. The parent is things you heard from you're parents at a young age. The child is emotions, also from a young age. The adult is rational, and its job is to sort out truth from falshood from the child and parent. It also collects new information and integrates it. The adult frame of mind is rational. Many people never use the adult portion and simply run off of the other two areas. Those people are irrational. He said that it is possible to change how you think, but it requires constant effort at first.

    I agree with his ideas. While the irrational don't necessarily "choose" their values, they simply never grow up, and never improve. I suppose it can be said that they make their choice to be irrational by not making the choice to change... <_<

  2. I am wondering what type of careers my fellow Objectivists pursue. I have two basic questions:

    1. What is your current job?

    2. What is it your goal to become? (if not the answer to #1).

    My answers:

    1. I work in a local pharmacy (which is a pretty good job for someone my age ;) ) I have a lot of duties, my favorite of which is processing and refilling perscriptions;.

    2. I want to become a mechanical engineer.

    I wasn't sure if it was relevant to his situation, thats why I said "I'm not sure if this is relevant to your situation" in the beginning. :D I suppose what I was trying to say is that most peoples friends have shortcomings, but it is best to focus on their positive traits. So long as the positive outweigh the negative, the relationship is fine. If not, well, that is why people stop being friends.

I'm not sure if this is relevant to your situation, but I remember ayn rand saying something to the extent of "love people for their virtues, not their vices." try not to think about your friends' problems, but focus on what is good about them. After I got into Objectivism, people really started to bug me, it seemed like everybody was a mindless sheep. After awhile, I learned to just not care if people don't live up to my standards, and only associate with people in situations where they could.

  5. I don't listen to much classical, but there was this song that came with my mp3 player that I really like. Its called "the saint" and its by Dr. SK chew. Its kind of classical meets modern. Has anybody else heard of him? I can't find his music anywhere! Only that one song.

  6. Okay, this is just getting ridiculous. I am with moose. So far all of the arguments I have seen against causual sex make absolutely no sense. So, how is causual sex an evasion of reality? If casual sex is so immoral, then isn't masturbation too? If, while masturbating, a man is pretending to be with his ideal woman, isn't this evasion of reality? Usually, when people masturbate, they are not doing it for emotional, but for physical reasons. Usually when people have causal sex, they are doing it for physical reasons. If a partner can give a person more pleasure, not necessarily "oh im sleeping with a hottie" pleasure, but physical pleasure, I don't see how it is any different than masturbation.

  7. Our teacher is really inconsistent. One minute he will say something, the next he contridicts it. But he does give us time to "collaborate" during class. Meaning he lets us ask eachother the answers to questions we don't know the answers to. I think he would think its alright because he is fine with kids who don't read and only look for answers.

  8. david odden: I do not think the world owes me anything. I should have specified a little more. Basically what we are doing is both reading all of the chapters but splitting finding the answers. We are still "learning" the same amount of material, just without doing all of the work. And as to dropping the class, the AP class actually has less work than the regular (which makes no sense).

    Blinky: In most knowledge based classes (math, science, spanish) I have lower grades than the stupid kids. My problem is that I get the highest test grades but seldom remember the homework. :nuke:

  9. A friend and I got into a similar argument on live journal. Here is my response as to why selflessness sucks:

    Selflessness disgusts me simply because if I were selfless, I could never be happy. I say the purpose of life is to enjoy yourself, to be happy. If sombodies own happiness in life is so unimportant that they let others' needs come before their own, they really don't think all that much of themself. That doesn't sound like a very good way to be happy does it?

    Looking back, its probably not the best arguement, but I won. :)

  10. I discovered Rand this summerwhen I worked at the family buisness as a secretary/receptionist. I was sitting around with nothing to do (there was literally nothing to do most of the time) and my boss goes, "Heres a book. You should read it." I really didn't want to read it because my boss was kinda crazy. I would read it only when he was in the office, and read a different book when he was gone. After the first hundred pages, I read it non-stop. I read it probably six or more hours a day. After I finished, I bought fountainhead, and just didn't stop reading her books.

  11. I am currently enrolled at a public high school. A friend and I are considering pooling our efforts in our history (AP!)class. The class basically consists of our teacher lecturing, giving us a study guide with all of the questions that will be on the test, and the tests themselves. Would it be immoral for each of us to do half of the work in the packet and copy the rest, if so, why? ;) Note that niether of us are planning to use history in our careers, or in any other way.
