  1. Too many posters here are trying to give Lincoln a free pass on his hypocritical stance on slaves in the North, etc. Here's a reality check; Lincoln goofed up. The objective thing to do is to admit it. Sheesh, It's glaring right in front of you re history! He also helped to establish the powers of the Federal government like no President had before him. Do not fear the truth out of a zealous opinion.
  2. Why even make an announcement about this new Oist blog at all? If a password is needed, and then screened to be approved, then why don't the blog creator(s) just invite those that they know personally, to join? I agree with Old Toad...
  3. MoveOn.org has officially endorsed Obama bin laden for President http://thecaucus.blogs.nytimes.com/2008/02...a/index.html?hp
  4. I do not care for anarchists or minarchists either, and yes I know that DiLorenzo is a Lew Rockwellian, but his book does posit some facts concerning the rise of big gov't under Lincoln's presidency. So, how does one account for the massive growth of the Federal government under Lincoln? It obviously didn't start with Lincoln, but Lincoln put big government on the map.
  5. Lincoln was indeed the first major player to establish statism in the USA. I highly recommend reading "Lincoln Unmasked" by Thomas DiLorenzo.
  6. The two worst Presidents in USA history; Franklin Roosevelt and Jimmy Carter.
  7. I was a Fred T. supporter, but not anymore. There is no doubt in my mind that Rudy is the best candidate for President of the USA. I hope that he wins Florida.
  8. This website had a lot of info. about F.T. that helped me to make my decision; http://www.ontheissues.org/Fred_Thompson.htm . I like Giuliani a lot, but I would be hard pressed to trust him to in actuality stave off the largesse of big government. As you know, he did not sign the pledge to not raise taxes, which is already a red flag for me. When push comes to actual shove, I think that Fred would do more to veto government largesse and actually defend liberty than Guiliani would. I see a lot of GW in Guiliani and that makes me ill at ease.
  9. ...Fred Thompson is my choice for President of the USA. Certainly, all of the candidates have their major drawbacks, some more than others, but one of them WILL be elected, so I am voting for the best candidate of a very poor field whom I think will best preserve liberty and appeal, at least somewhat, to Objectivist friendly ethics. Obviously, Fred Thompson is far from an ideal candidate, but I think that he is the best choice. A lot of Oists like Giuliani, but after hours and hours on the internet of research into the candidate's character and voting records as elected officials, I have to conclude that F. Thompson is the most qualified to be President.
  10. I agree with Capitalism Forever. My choice is Fred Thompson, too. Why isn't he listed?
  11. What are your favorite love stories? Mine are; 1) Jane Austen 'Pride & Prejudice' 2) Joanne Harris 'Chocolat' 3) Oscar Wilde 'An Ideal Husband'
  12. One of the many many reasons why I admire Ayn Rand is because if she wasn't well read enough on a particular matter, such as evolution, she would withhold a definitive conclusion. She was an excellent example of intellectual honesty and integrity.
  13. As a couple I think that it would be neat to create your own last name together. Some women who keep there maiden names maybe don't realize the fact that their maiden name is most likely from their father who is also, a man! In reality then there is no real individuation from keeping the maiden name.
  14. Mimpy, Yes, you can read 'The Origin Of Species' to start. Also, beginning with raw chemistry, living things have to have acquired, over time, the myriad complex systems so common to us today. But for every postulated evolutionary advance, for the acquisition of every new system, an increase of information is required. This is because biological systems, like cars, derive from information. They do not come out of thin air. The information comes before, and gives rise to the systems. Thus, to get new systems you first of all need new information. Evolution has no way to get either any initial information, or the information necessary for each increase in complexity.
  15. Evolution is junk science. I'm sorry, but evolution is such a slap in the face of science and the scientific method that it is akin to Al Gore's global warming tripe. BTW, I am not a creationist, I just can't buy into the sloppy 'science' of evolution.
  16. Drug use isn't bad per se, it depends on the where, what, why, and how much. For instance, if a man comes home from work after pouring concrete all day it would not be immoral to ingest a glass of wine, a hydrocodone pill , or a muscle relaxer to help with the aches and pains of work and to help him unwind at the end of a long day.-overindulging in these substances would. It would be immoral if he willingly ingested these substances at work thereby effecting his work performance as well as putting others in jeopardy. With drugs every individuals reaction and addiction threshold is going to be different. There is"no one size fits all". Even foods can affect our moods and mental states. Anything we ingest will affect us physiologically one way or another, some more than others, and some at different parts of ones body. Drugs (and yes that includes alcohol, nicotine, and caffeine) are highly concentrated chemicals that in large part affect the central nervous system, it is therefore important that one use extreme moderation and correct use of them so as to achieve a therapeutic benefit without abusing the drug. I think that one should always seek to maintain mental clarity and stability so as to maximize productiveness, creativity, and rational joy in life, sometimes it is good for the mind to rest, just as it is crucial for the body to sleep. Drugs, can be helpful in achieving mental and/or physical relaxation and excitement so long as it does not cloud ones ability to think, injure ones, or another's body, and cause addiction.
