  1. wow...great replies...the debates going on are exactly the kind i have been thinking about.....republicans being so influenced by religion....should i vote for the lesser of the two evils or none at all etc. as i said earlier, i have voted mostly republican, but i also have voted democrat and libertarian. wouldn't it be great to have an objectivist political party? an objectivist once told me that objectivists are not interested in obtaining power...hence we believe in limited government... but is that why there isn't any objectivist political party? i'm sure i'm not the first who's thought of it. also, i am wondering who voted for the green party. it would be nice if they spoke up and gave reasons. so speak up people! from objectivist articles that i've read, most objectivists believe that environmentalism should fall under a concern for science not politics or they don't think it's a concern at all.
  2. I haven't read that yet. I just started reading ayn rand in april and between college & looking for a job haven't had time to get acquainted with all her works yet. that is next on my list though as well as The Virtue of Selfishness. I'll let you know what i think about it as soon as i read it.
  3. mostly i have voted Republican in the past, but then i don't agree with all republican issues. for instance i'm pro-choice. as elections are coming up I'm curious as to what my fellow objectivists choose when they go to vote, if at all. Don't forget to let us know why you vote for your political party in the forum replies.
  4. i loved Dagny because she was stubborn and didn't convert until she was absolutely sure of her decsion....somewhat like me. But otherwise I loved Francisco for his wit and sarcasm!
  5. i didnt actually read any sherlock holmes till i was a teen. but when i was 8-13 i loved every single detective story/book i could get ahold of. my favorite were the kind that let you reason it out and try to guess the culprit before turning the page. as a child i wanted to be a detective/writer.
  6. yep, haha..forgot to mention the name...strange the link works when i click it. oh well, i always have trouble with links.
  7. i just took my first Economics class last semester. according to my professor a guy named Keynes came up with demand-side economics. its too complicated to explain on a forum, but according to the theory...if the government "demands" more products by increasing government spending (ex. buying tanks for defense) ... then businesses who produce tanks, etc. will increase production, increasing jobs, and those employees will increase spending...and thus ending up in economic expansion. According to Keynes... the solution to a recession is to increase government spending and lower taxes. that said, my professor thought the whole Keynesian theory was dumb, he liked the Classical theory of economics better. however, according to him, that is what the united states has been doing since the depression. before then the government was required to balance its budget...something unheard of in our days.
  8. i'm 23, majoring in economics, thinking of maybe double majoring in math as well. Living in Los Angeles, CA. My favorite book is Atlas Shrugged, though the Fountainhead is a close second.
  9. to nimble: amazing, i had the exact same theory as you after i read a book about Ayn Rand's life and how much she influenced Alan Greenspan. at that time, the cold war was still going on and the world was looking at whether communism or capitalism would win in the end. according to the book, Ayn told Alan that if our country's economy failed then people/society would blame capitalism and start looking elsewhere (i.e. communism) for a solution. she also attended a ceremony where he was inducted into his first government post. i forget the exact details...but i think its the one where Nixon appointed him. it sounded to me that she was quite proud of how far he'd gone. also, i couldnt fathom the idea of anyone being objectivist and then turning against it. whether he still is or not...only he knows.
  10. i always considered Howard Roark to be an objectivist. also, in a 1995 online lecture by Leonard Peikoff (which you can view at www.aynrand.org) he clearly uses Roark as an example that an objectivist never comprimises his values.
  11. my fave painting this is my favorite painting...its on my wall. it is by Jack Vettriano. i've seen the rest of his work and i can't say i'm crazy about it. but this one painting i love. i was walking down the mall one day and i literally did a double take when i glanced at it through the window. i love how the couple are dancing and looking (or rather acting) so happy despite the lousy weather! in general i'm into romantic realism art.
