  1. I owe my great geography skills to that show! Although Carmen was a villain I always thought she looked awesome in a fedora and trench coat! For awhile I was really into detective stories/cartoons/whatever...even considered a future career in it (I was 10..). Batman: The Animated series was my favorite Batman cartoon... I don't think any of the others come close. I do like the fact that Bruce Wayne had to train hard and uses his reason/intelligence to solve crimes and get out of tight binds.
  2. Welcome back....I remember your insightful posts!! Congrats on the degree!!
  3. Americo - that was brilliant! I don't know very many good jokes off the top of my head... but this one always gets me. Marge: I'm worried about the kids, Homey. Lisa's becoming very obsessive. This morning I caught her trying to dissect her own raincoat. Homer: I know. And this perpetual-motion machine she made today is a joke. It just keeps going faster and faster. Marge: And Bart isn't doing very well either. He needs boundaries and structure. There's something about flying a kite at night that's so unwholesome. [Looks out window] Bart: [creepily] Hello, mother dear. Marge: That's it, we have to get them back to school. Homer: I'm with you, Marge. Lisa. Get in here. [Lisa walks in] Homer: In this house, we obey the laws of thermodynamics!
  4. Who is your favorite Atlas Shrugged couple? I know John Galt is the ideal man and everything but at the end I wanted Dagny to stay with Francisco because he'd waited so long for her. I included evil couples as well just to be democratic.
  5. wow you do great voices! as a child i always thought it would be cool do cartoon voices. not looking into it as a serious career...but it sounds fun. how much are your classes?
  6. Just read a great article in Wired about Richard Branson and his plans for Virgin Galactic. He's got nearly 200 companies with a net worth of $9 billion. I must say he's becoming one of my favorite capitalists. I love his enthusiasm for his new venture, there's also a great video clip of SpaceShipOne on the Virgin Galactic website. http://www.wired.com/wired/archive/13.01/branson.html
  7. I would like to add the following movies to my list. The Aviator Phantom of the Opera Modern Times by Chaplin Modern Times is a silent movie with some sounds. It's great though....wonderful comedy.... you really see why Chaplin is a legend.
  8. I recently went to see the movie and I have to say I quite liked it. It is sad that he had that mental illness and I agree with Stephen on the lack of explanation but overall I still found it inspiring for the portrayal of him fighting against the politicians. Other than the line already mentioned ...I also liked the line where the Senator talks about Pan Am not caring about making money and Howard retorts with "i'm sure his stockholders would like to know that".
  9. it's #4 on my post- I love Spencer Tracy's deliberation...he's a great actor....one of my favorites of the Hollywood Golden Era.
  10. years ago, before I ever picked up Ayn Rand.... I was interested in the history of religions, how they had come about and what aided them. the best thing I did was sign up at a course about the history of Jerusalem at UCLA. the course offered a history about the three major religions from an archeological perspective without all the religious overtones. the required text was "Jerusalem: One City, Three Faiths" by Karen Armstrong which I found an excellent book that answered all my questions on that subject. http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detai...326340?v=glance "curiousity never killed the cat....it just answered his questions"
  11. LOL ....thanks for the advice everyone. i guess i just get frustrated sometimes. especially because I'd like to teach my younger brother to use reason and be rational in life. but then its hard with the majority telling him otherwise.
  12. I just saw the movie Darkness ...which is about ghosts. Afterwards the subject was discussed. I, of course, declared my disbelief in the subject altogether. However, my parents, my younger brother and husband talked about stories they'd heard or experienced....all expressing their belief. I tried to argue the subject with the usual "trick of the light or imagination running wild" but it failed badly. If it had been anybody else I might have suggested a weak mental state... however this was my family I was talking to and didnt want to offend them. Just wondering if anyone else has had this problem? Are there any Objectivists who actually believe in ghosts? What do you say to those who do?
  13. I've never quite understood transexuals. Homosexuality I see as a preference. But there are some gay men for example who prefer to dress as women while others who are quite happy being men and dress quite manly. The same goes for lesbians...some want to look butch and others are quite feminine. I suppose if I had a son and he was gay I wouldn't want him to be transexual because to me it seems like he is trying to evade the fact that he was born male. I recently heard on the radio about some experimental procedures where the doctors put a fully functioning penis on transexual women. I just find this strange. I'm not against gays but I don't think its right to deny what sex you were born. what do you all think?
  14. If I could live 1,000 years.... 1. Travel the world and outer space 2. become the richest person in the world (at least once) 3. master all disciplines 4. buy an island and write books
  15. i would not consider myself fashionable at all. from the poll i chose "keep up with the current trends but select what i like from them". i dont think i could ever wear designer clothes everyday, for example, as I tend to be a bit clumsy sometimes and would lose major money at the dry cleaners from spills, messes and maybe even rips. i do like to dress up for special occasions though. It is nice to feel like a "greek-goddess" sometimes when going to a formal affair. or if I'm going out to a night-club or on a date I like to look as nice as possible but always comfortable. I've had occassions when i chose looks over comfort and that NEVER went well. I was not able to enjoy myself and it showed.
  16. welcome to the forum! hope you will find all the answers to the questions I wasn't able to provide for you when you asked me in person. I've still got some learning to do myself! Don't be a stranger (lurker)!
  17. I know Green Day has an awful view on politics. It is horrible that bands mess in things they don't know enough about. That said, I have to say I do still listen to their music and quite like it. From their new album I have found Boulevard of Broken Dreams to be extremely helpful in helping me cope with my recent divorce. The music, the lyrics, and his voice all come together splendidly. They convey a message that yeah he walks alone in life but that there is not necessarily anything wrong with being alone. I'd like to thank Concerto for his Postal Service recommendation. I started listening to them after reading his post and can't get enough of "Such Great Heights" and "Against all Odds". Also, I was fortunate enough to have seen the Killers play live for New Years Eve here in Los Angeles. They were absolutely awesome!!!
  18. ok, just saw the movie....i'm adding it to my favorite movies list. as stephen mentioned before...the visuals were amazing. the costumes were excellent....the singing superb...and of course the storyline. i too want to see it again as soon as I can.
  19. was looking in the Turner Classic Movies website for the two movies but had no luck finding either. they both sound really great...and as a fan of classic movies I'm dying to see both! thanks for the review.
  20. My New Year's Resolutions: 1. Spend more quality time with my husband, brother and parents. 2. Obtain my Associate's Degree's in Economics & Math (then transfer to UCLA). 3. Make time to read at least one good book per month. 4. Start applying for internships at investment firms. 5. Learn to play the piano. Sorry I don't have time to write in details of how I'm going to obtain these goals. Hope everyone else is enjoying the holidays!
  21. i've been looking forward to seeing this movie since i saw the trailer awhile back. i went and read the book first because I like to read the book before i see the movie when i can. i thoroughly enjoyed the book and from the trailer scenes and music ....the movie looks absolutely fantastic. will be watching it tomorrow on xmas day. i've never seen the theatre production either but i'm glad they're using the same music.
  22. Merry Xmas and a Happy New Years to everyone!! Great card Stephen!! May the New Year bring many more insightful posts and clever replies.
  23. lol... thanks all for worrying ...but i actually removed my avatar a while back...i meant to remove the profile pic as well...i'll be replacing it with an update. p.s thanks to GC and McGroarty for getting the forum back...it was missed!
  24. my knowledge of forums, worms and viruses is very limited but has anyone else read about the santy worm attacking sites through Google? Here's a link to the news page http://www.pcworld.com/news/article/0,aid,119029,00.asp
  25. i voted for medium metropolitan city...which I thought was the closest thing to Los Angeles. Its not as crowded as New York...unless you're driving on the freeway during rush hour. The weather is nice...beaches are great...there's a lot of diversity here. I wouldnt mind visiting New York or anything...but I'm too used to warm weather.
