- but it's a fun watch. I particularly enjoyed the training sequences. Not a spy movie per se, but The Incredibles borrows as many elements from the Bond genre as it does from the superhero comics - and gets in a few good digs at collectivism to boot. (Spoiler) Syndrome: "...and when everyone's special, then no one will be..." Plus it is absolutely entertaining and amusing. An amazingly tense spy movie that's also remarkably devoid of action and gore: Hitchcok's Topaz. If you want to be doubly appreciative of the recent Bourne flicks, watch the old 70's miniseries!

The Moon is a Harsh Mistress is a freedom lover's classic. In a nutshell: Loonies declare independence and turn the moon into a sort of Galt's Gulch. Excellent!

Now I'm tracking. What you say is true enough. Not to mention it's fiat money anyway. Gold standard, anyone? -

How's that? I don't know about you, but I've been "paying" federal taxes (i.e. had them "withheld,'" AKA stolen, for many years now, and for a month and a half so far this year. -

The money is coming from within the system, so it can't possibly improve the economy. It's like getting a blood transfusion in your left arm...from your right arm. As to what you should do with it? Whatever you want. It was yours to start with. Think of the rebate a small restitution paid to you from the thief who has taken so much more. -
I suggest reading the book "The Introvert Advantage." It might help shed some light on all the effects of your introversion you may not realize are there, and thus help with your depression. The author has a web site as well: http://www.theintrovertadvantage.com/being.html In objectivist terms: if you are being true to yourself and others and not trying to be someone or something you are not, your self esteem will rise.

I'm a 22 year vet of the USAF, enlisted and officer, and still serving. My advice: If you want to serve for altruistic reasons, i.e. you beleive it is your moral obligation; then you haven't completely absorbed objectivism. On the other hand, if you want to serve in exchange for some value, be it adventure, medals, contribution to the defense of your life and freedom, conquering the challenges of military service, etc. then give it a go. In that regard, you will still be a trader. You will be trading your time in the service for the value(s) you seek in return, instead of trading stocks. Griz

What Can Women Do Better Than Men?
grizzly8566 replied to dadmonson's topic in Psychology and Self Improvement
As a generalization, women are better at interpersonal communication...which may have some drawbacks in the business world. Consider this article by Deborah Tannen: You Just Don't Understand by Deborah Tannen, Ph.D. William Morrow and Company, 1990 Reviewed by Laura Bryannan That men and women are on different wavelengths when it comes to communicating is probably not news to you. However, "Can We Talk?" the cover story of the December issue of New Age Journal, provides some excellent new perspectives on this age-old problem. The author, Peggy Taylor, interviewed sociolinguist Deborah Tannen, who has written a book called You Just Don't Understand: Women and Men in Conversation. Tannen's research shows that the differences between the communication styles of men and women go far beyond mere socialization, and appear to be inherent in the basic make up of each sex. Tannen first noticed these differences when studying videotapes another researcher had made of best friends asked to have a conversation together. In contrast to the girls, boys were extremely uncomfortable with this request. Girls in all age groups would face each other and immediately began to talk, eventually ending up discussing the problems of one girl. Boys, on the other hand, sat parallel to each other and would jump from topic to topic--centered around a time when they would do something together. Tannen observed that, "For males, conversation is the way you negotiate your status in the group and keep people from pushing you around; you use talk to preserve your independence. Females, on the other hand, use conversation to negotiate closeness and intimacy; talk is the essence of intimacy, so being best friends means sitting and talking. For boys, activities, doing things together, are central. Just sitting and talking is not an essential part of friendship. They're friends with the boys they do things with." I have a few thoughts: 1. If the school or program you are applying to only takes the kind of students that have "embelished" resumes, then as an objectivist, you would probably not benefit by involving yourself with them. They are second-handers. Even the prestige of having an Ivy League shingle is not worth the compromise of your objectivist principles. 2. have you looked at Pepperdine university? According to a conservative columnist named Mike Adams, it is refreshingly not dominated by liberals. That's not to say they're objectivists, but they might come closer than the rest. Griz
