Bush declares Objectivism "a threat to America"
Maximus replied to lex_aver's topic in Introductions and Personal Notes
I tried to watch a Bush press conference once. I was so embarrased for this country that I've never watched another. That, and all of his gaffes made me want to hurl. How many times can a grown man say "uhh..." in one sentance? -
Anomalous monism and Rand
Maximus replied to The_Rational_Animal's topic in Metaphysics and Epistemology
We exist, our consciousness exists. It is the result of the function of a living human brain. I am, therefore, I think. Consciousness can't help but to be related to existance, to think otherwise would seem to belong to the realm of the mystic. -

Where exactly did that quote come from? -
Beck has his lucid moments.

I say just go down and flip the on switch.

I've found that most who claim not to like Rand's writing, fiction or non, have never read her. They are glomming on to the opinions of others, with nothing upstairs of thier own.

That's all we need, another pressure group led by my former Senator and uber-hypocrite, algore. He should stick to searching for Man-Bear-Pig. Superhero Al Gore. Note Nobel Prize medal around neck, the source of his gnarly powers .

Faith is indicative of absense of intelligence.

It's just another BS power grab that will resolve nothing and further erode our liberites. Typical Big-Government think.

It would be important that they are literate. They would have to be open to the aquisition of knowledge. I, too, read to aquire knowledge, as an end in itself. We can never learn too much.

You are having a hard time understanding it because such a view is irrational. It is based on feelings, rather than logic. It is an entirely self-sacrificial, anti-life philosophy.

What she means is that if you have no right to the product of your own effort then you are no better than a slave.

Iranian Munitions Found in Iraq
Maximus replied to TheEgoist's topic in Terrorism and Islamic Fundamentalism
Saudi is where the Wahabist sect comes from, and they are financing timebombs in our midst in the form of Wahabist madrasas. Basically, using our own money against us by developing domestic Jihadists. Look for it in the not too distant future. Syria is more of a regional player, supplying Hamas and contributing to the instability of the Palestinian/Isreali situation. All are evil after thier fashion and equally deserving of whatever they call down upon thier own heads by thier intrigues. -
Leaving aside the issue of cultural and economic factors for the moment, consider this: as the most basic individual right is the right to life, would it not be prudent to have a vetting system in place to determine if an immigrant is basically healthy? Would not free and unrestrained immigration carry the danger of reintroducing diseases that had been previously almost eradicated, such as TB? Would one argue that an immigrant's individual right to unrestrained travel takes precidence over yours or my right to life, i.e., not being unnessesarily exposed to contagion?

Iranian munitions? Surely not! Aren't we told that they are the followers of a peaceful religion? Seriously, Iran, Saudi Arabia and Syria are our true enemies and the main supporters of the Jihadist nut-jobs. -
Hello and welcome Julian! Have you read Atlas Shrugged yet?
-
Hello everyone! I have recently become an avid student of Objectivism, having been introduced to the ideas of Ayn Rand through her fiction. A good friend recommended that I read Anthem, and, having done so, I proceeded to devour The Fountainhead and Atlas Shrugged as well. The philosophical concepts resonated with me, and validated much of what I had concluded through my own efforts. I am working through Introduction to Objectivist Epistomology and Objectivism: The Philosophy of Ayn Rand. So, I am still a novice Objectivist, but eager to learn from those more experienced than myself. I have travelled a long route to reach this point, a route filled with philosophical dead-ends, and pseudo-mystic mumbo-jumbo; to wit: Wicca, Rosicrucianism, The Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn, Ordo Templi Orientis, comparative religious studies, Jung, and general occultism. Having wasted years in pursuit of mysteries and hidden knowledge, I came to a firm conclusion: it was all a waste of valuble time. I look forward to interacting here to our mutual benifit.
