  1. Check out this unusual performance of his Prelude No. 2 in C Minor from Book I of The Well-Tempered Clavier: John Link
  2. I think the gist of the article is that Obama's website doesn't mind if you use someone else's card, thereby engaging in credit-card fraud, to make a donation. On a second reading I see that I was mistaken. The article is concerned only with individuals that use their own cards with various fictitious names in order to contribute more than the legal limit. 3. Of course Greenspan was Rand's protégé, not the other way around. I think it was 1974 when I read in Newsweek about Greenspan's appointment as Ford's chief economic advisor. The article said that Greenspan was a student of the philosopher Ayn Rand but that he didn't let abstract philosophy get in the way of practical politics (Does anyone else remember that? I wonder how accurate my recollection is). Although I knew nothing about Ayn Rand, that statement seemed a little strange to me, and I wondered what she and Greenspan would have said about it. Two years later I came across Ayn Rand's work in my college book store and started reading everything I could find. When I read what Greenspan said about his mistakes about the free market I wonder whether maybe the strange statement in Newsweek was right. John Link
  4. Why did you post a link to the full article when you have already posted the full article?
  5. Growing up in the alleys of Chicago my friends and I more than once lost a ball to an angry neighbor when the ball travelled into a neighbor's yard or through a neighbor's window. I think we got the ball back when we paid for the window. John Link
  6. Make that _extra virgin! Your mother did tell you to eat your spinach, didn't she?
  7. How about this one? "On the seventh day, God rested." If God is omnipotent, then doing heavy work is just as easy as doing nothing, so for God there is no such thing as a rest!
  8. Happy birthday! Take a look here to see who shares your day: http://www.born-today.com/Today/10-12.htm

  11. From the linked article: "League officials suggested that Jericho play other positions, or pitch against older players or in a different league."
  12. Here are a few facts to put the above into perspective: 1) A four-minute mile requires an average speed of 15 miles per hour. 2) A mile run at 25 miles per hour would take only 2 minutes and 24 seconds. John Link
  13. Song of Russia, the propaganda film discussed by Ayn Rand in her HUAC testimony is available on DVD from these two sources: http://www.ioffer.com/i/Song-of-Russia-194...Peters-59937431 http://www.ioffer.com/i/SONG-OF-RUSSIA-194...PETERS-51897391 I just ordered a copy because I'd like to see this nonsense for myself. 14. The change in style of speech over the years is discussed at length by John McWhorter in his book "Doing Our Own Thing": http://www.amazon.com/Doing-Our-Thing-John.../dp/0434010588/ Hubert Humphrey's 1964 speech accepting the Democratic party's nomination for vice-president also displays a formality that is not present in today's speeches: http://www.americanrhetoric.com/speeches/h...hrey1964dnc.htm John Link

  16. I just came across this transcript of Ayn Rand's HUAC testimony: http://en.wikisource.org/wiki/Ayn_Rand%27s...ican_Activities Wikipedia says that Gregory Ratoff, the director of "Song of Russia" (the propaganda film that occupied most of Rand's testimony), was born in Russia in 1897 and came to the U.S. in 1922. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gregory_Ratoff John Link
  17. I think he looks much better with long hair, which just shows how much tastes can differ. John Link 54-year-old with long hair ("Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah!")
  18. Man on Wire, the story of Felippe Petit's 45-minute walk between the towers of the World Trade Center. Man on Wire at the IMDB
  19. The salary you are earning and the clarity and expressiveness of your writing suggests strongly to me that you are fully able to learn to be self-sufficient. I suggest you find someone (maybe several people, including your mother) to help you learn to do all the things you need to do. Everybody has to learn how to deal with each of the reponsibilities you listed, and they can be learned, one at a time. I think the concerns you express seem completely normal for someone in his mid 20s. Good luck! John Link
