  1. This Valentine's Day, accompanied by my own guitar and by bassist Trifon Dimitov, I will be singing love songs by The Beatles at 7:00 p.m. in Gallery 300 on the southwest corner of 8th Avenue and 22nd Street in Manhattan. As introductions to the Beatles' songs we will perform my arrangements of preludes by Frédéric Chopin. The performance will take place amid the inspiring sculpture of Sabin Howard, including his latest life-size works, Apollo and Aphrodite, seen here: http://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=474268948596&set=a.431993278596.222921.689383596 In advance: $10, children 9 and under $5 At the door: $12, children 9 and under $7 To pay in advance, go to https://www.paypal.com and send your payment to [email protected], or send a check made out to JOHN LINK to the following address: John Link 141 West 26th Street, 3rd Floor New York, NY 10001 When sending your payment, please include the names of the people who will attend and whether they are adults or children. 2. Very good! By the way, I first heard about Paul Graham on this forum. I find his writing to be very insightful. John Link
  3. There are some quotation marks missing from the post above which is almost entirely taken verbatim from the article by Graham without indicating so. See for yourself: http://paulgraham.com/tablets.html John Link
  4. I always feel uncomfortable when hear the sort of speech to which you refer. It also reminds me of visits in the 60s by my cousins from the south side of Chicago who would tell me stories that would start off with "You know what the niggers in our school did last week?". John Link
  5. More precisely, in your example you referred to the word "nigger" but you did not use the word. John Link
  6. Not just short, but exactly one line! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/One-liner_joke John Link

  8. Myrtok, thanks for providing the link to a very interesting article. John Link
  9. Would you cite passages in Rand's writing that support your statement that she desired to formulate a justification of animal rights? I don't recall ever reading any such passage. John Link
  10. Do you understand what I meant when I wrote that in the interval between 0 and 1 the rational numbers are unlikely? John Link
  11. Your comment leads me to question your understanding of the concept of infinity, and whether you understand that there are more real numbers between 0 and 1 than there are rational numbers between 0 and 1, even though both sets, the rationals and the reals, are infinite. John Link
  12. What great news! I've shared the link on Facebook. John Link
  13. I didn't read the entire article, but near the beginning the following caught my attention: "If infinitely many observers throughout the universe win the lottery, on what grounds can one still claim that winning the lottery is unlikely? To be sure, there are also infinitely many observers who do not win, but in what sense are there more of them?" The above passage shows that the authors do not understand the concept of infinity, and that one infinite set can be larger than another. For example, the set of rational numbers between 0 and 1 is a countable infinite set, while the set of real numbers between 0 and 1 is an uncountable infinite set. In the interval between 0 and 1 the rational numbers are unlikely. John Link
  14. Right. I would have no problem if an airline, or any other business or individual, required its customers to submit to naked pictures or a grope, since I could take my business elsewhere if I were not willing to satisfy the requirements. But when the government requires me to submit to naked pictures or a grope in order to do business with an airline, or any other business or individual, that is a violation of my rights. John Link
  15. Below is the text of an email I am sending today to everyone in my personal database. John Link Dear ???, In case you have not already learned, the Transportation Safety Administration (TSA) has instituted the practice of requiring all air travelers to either submit to a full-body scan or be subject to a pat-down that includes the genitals and breasts. In response to this violation of our rights, the outraged citizens of the United States will hold a National Opt-Out Day this Wednesday, November 24th, in which travelers will opt-out of the full-body scan and instead submit to the pat-down in order to show the absurdity of the TSA's most recent madness. http://www.optoutday.com/ I ask you to do whatever you can to put an end to the TSA madness. Here are a few suggestions: 1) On Wednesday, November 24th: a) If you are flying on that day, opt out of the full-body scan and submit to the grope (i.e., pat-down). Be sure to have someone with you to record the incident with either video or still photography. If you are not flying on that day, go to an airport and get as near as you can to a security checkpoint so that you can be an observer of the violation of rights by the TSA. Record what you see with either video or still photography. 2) Write to your congressman and urge them to support H.R. 6416, The American Traveler Dignity Act. Here is a link to the text of the act: http://shar.es/X1Quf Here is a link to a video of Ron Paul introducing the act: Here's a link to a page where you can find contact information for your congressmen: http://www.contactingthecongress.org 3) Tell President Obama that you object to the TSA's violation of our rights: http://www.whitehouse.gov/contact 4) Sign this petition to stop "enhanced" airport screening techniques now: http://www.wnd.com/airportscreening 5) Forward this email to your friends and family. Please do whatever you can to help put an end to this madness. John Link P.S. Here is a link to a video that contains an interview with Isaac Yeffet, the former director of El Al security, in which he says that the TSA's policies are completely ineffective in keeping us safe: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pQum39C8K9Y
  16. The proposal is NOT "end the TSA". The text of H.R. 4616 can be found here: http://www.pogowasright.org/?p=17292 Please let's not turn this thread into a long discussion about Ron Paul that comes to the conclusion that Ron Paul is not an Objectivist and therefore any true Objectivist must not support or associate himself with anything that Ron Paul proposes. As I've written on my facebook page, "My friends (Facebook and otherwise) and I have varying opinions about Obamacare, taxes, the expansion of the money supply, whether there is an afterlife, and a great many other things. But despite these differences I think we can all agree that the TSA has run amok. Let's put an end to the madness!". John Link
  17. Here's a link to a video of Ron Paul introducing H.R. 6416: John Link P.S. Is there no way for me to correct my typo in the subject of this thread? Yikes!
  18. Here's a link to the text of Ron Paul's speech introducing legislation that would put an end to the TSA madness: http://www.pogowasright.org/?p=17262 I urge you to write your representatives and tell them to do everything in their power to support the passage of this legislation.

I see no need to restrict the statement to America. Just think about what happens when the Soccer World Cup is won. I think it might even be the case that in some countries, almost everyone is fanatical about their soccer team. John Link
