Does Libertarianism have a Philosophy?
FrolicsomeQuipster replied to Jonathan13's topic in Political Philosophy
If you take nonaggression as an axiom instead of a conclusion it becomes an axle with its meaning is determined by the wheel of misfortune rotating on top of it. The show JustRight has some good stuff on libertarianism in my opinion. http://www.justrightmedia.org/blog/archives/category/politics/libertarianism-politics?doing_wp_cron=1359710672.5553820133209228515625 -
Certainty vs. pragmatism
FrolicsomeQuipster replied to NewEdit617's topic in Metaphysics and Epistemology
And when you point that they continue that they're not certain of that either. After that things get awkward. I've yet to ask one if they think Objectivism "could" be right by their standards then, if they'd admit to that the discussion swings to why they don't think it isn't. . -
Certainty vs. pragmatism
FrolicsomeQuipster replied to NewEdit617's topic in Metaphysics and Epistemology
I recently tried to condense this topic for myself, what do you guys think of the following formulation? Unless otherwise indicated everything can be said to stay the same, to proclaim otherwise is to assume some none indicative form of cognition. While I was still a skeptic I thought that the argument "I can imagine it to be otherwise" was an valid indication that something could be otherwise. But the fact that imagination is not a form of cognition goes both ways. You can't conjure up reasons out of nothing why something is a certain way (a wizard made the sun), But you also can't conjure up reasons out of nothing for why something could be otherwise (a wizard could make the sun disappear). -
As far as I can see there's no flash audio play element by this one: I think I remember something similar happening but I dropped it at that time cause the topic didn't interest me as much and I couldn't find a way to contact the one who takes care for the website. Still don't know how to do that but now I find the topic more interesting and would also like to know if anyone else has the same problem. I don't have any problem seeing the audio element for any of the other ones though. I can't see it at this particular site and also not in the list. Haven't checked iTunes, though I'd rather not bother with that at the moment. http://www.peikoff.com/2013/01/07/ybrook-a-follow-up-to-a-previous-podcast-on-the-question-if-a-moral-change-in-a-culture-is-proceeded-by-change-in-the-accepted-epistemology-shouldnt-the-spearhead-of-objectivism-be-focused-on-sp/

I always enjoy the random quote on the front page but this one struck me kind of odd. I don't remember where it is from but I'm pretty sure the source would have the word I underlined here being antagonist. Wouldn't make a thread about it but I thought it was an amusing kind of error.

The Tower of God has great setting and characters, originally Korean though I have to say that the translation job is also great. http://mangapirate.net/Tower_of_God/0/2 The former battles it out with surrealist obituaries for the position of my favorite webcomic. This one ranges from self contained pages to self contained story arcs and more recently also has gotten some short text only stories which for the most I also enjoyed. I think several of you may specifically enjoy a certain character called Eldercash. http://surrealistobituaries.com/content/?p=48

Aside from the line about the mother and a few too many repeated lines I thought it was pretty nice. I think it wouldn't be that hard to add a few more other things to ask about and maybe an ending that draws an actual conclusion it could be great. (Though that one line could also be interpreted in that she wouldn't be a mother without a child.) -

"Skyfall" opens friday. All reviews welcome.
FrolicsomeQuipster replied to Craig24's topic in Movies, Shows, and Theatre
I didn't like it. White text spoilers: The motivation of the villain feels weak and he accomplishes his goal. It felt to me as if the Joker succeed in blowing up the ships and then Batmen kills him after. Bond fails at his job had been evaluated as unfit for it and still keeps it. Also the speech by M in court felt to me more like if she was saying that any group is exempt from judgement by virtue of it being a group. It also tries to go for a old vs new theme but fails at this in my opinion the villain may use newish "magical hacking" but he's older then Bond making Bond appear more like an advocate of stagnation. An impression that wasn't weakened by an ending that almost gave me a deja vu. -

This lecture https://estore.aynra...ll-mp3-download really helped me grasp what I think you're currently struggling with. You may want to listen to the second part first though thats where the metaphysics are discussed. It really helps to understand that from determinism it doesn't follow that what you think is determined, if determinism is true you wouldn't be "thinking".

Oops wrong thread. On this topic though, it seems to me you're confusing Objectivism with the views of certain hard line Libertarians.,
