  1. Second that. As a rising high school senior and thus current college searcher, I was reading up in my Fiske Guide one day when I came across a quote from a student at Columbia (known for it's extensive core curriculum on the Western canon) who asked why we should study Western canon when Western society was just a long history of racism, sexism, and oppression. I sort of wondered what society he thought was better. Sure, historically, Western society has had its tremendous faults, and everyone acknowledges that. But did he really not see that not only could the same be said of every other world culture historically, but also that, of the options, Western society was probably the best historically, even if far from perfect? I think it's just that - a contempt for the historical faults of Western culture that both fails to realize its incredible successes and fails to realize the same faults in other cultures.
  2. Well, as a student of Latin, I can say that, if it were Latin, the plural would be syringes. Which I've always assumed was another drug reference. No, actually, I have no idea. As a Rush fan myself, though, I'd have to say my favorite song right now is either Anthem or Camera Eye, or maybe Something for Nothing. I can't listen to 2112 at all any more, or if I do, I just listen up until the end of the "Temples of Syrinx" part and then skip the waterfall part because for some reason that section just really annoys me.
  3. I don't actually know if I've posted on these forums before, though I have read posts on them often. Anyways, my question involves that recently I have burned two cds for my girlfriend of some of my favorite songs. Is this right/legal (the two not always being the same). All the music involved was legally bought by me or my dad (which raises another question, which is, is it right/legal for me to use music my dad bought, even if he did so legally) Thanks
