  1. Welcome to the board Hema!! I am going into fashion design in the fall, so I must ask you where where you working and how come you're not doing it anymore? Megan
  2. Hi Ray! Welcome to the Forum! On another note, I will be attending Ryerson this fall and for the next 4 years. I don't know a soul in Toronto, and would love to join such a group, and meet Toronto Objectivists. Can I join? Megan
  3. You forgot all about VOLITION, which is what separates man from animals and allows him to act either for his life or against it.
  4. Great advice Betsy, that's all I needed to know. Something simple - I'm overwhelmed and that's just what I needed. I guess I needed some reasurance from someone else, that I was doing the right thing. Thank you very much, I have always been a firm believer in advice. But only from people that I respect. And from your posts, I greatly respect you and look forward to receiving any advice from you in the future! Megan
  5. I know that I recently discovered, that I have been rationalizing for a long time now, most of my school years. I am now 20 and just realizing now, that I 'trained my brain' all wrong. I have been out of school for 2 years now, and am just going back in the fall. I am extremely concerned about this, as I no longer trust much of the knowledge I have. I am worried I will not be able to learn properly and to apply my knowledge; I have always had a very hard time with essays and such. I have been pointed out my rationalism lately, and I do see it, but like Kelly said, how do you fix it??? Or is this something that demands more professional assistance.... I am a firm supporter of Objectivism, and I am very familiar with it as of the past 2 years. But my main problem has been overcoming the excitement of reading the works of Ayn Rand and getting down to business about applying it to my own life. Here's where my rationalism gets in the way. I am not usually ruled by my emotions, but lately, in my most down times, that's all I have left, unable to understand it all and to know how to fix the problem. In fact, seemingly more and more often, my emotions are not connected to my conscious activities, which has deepened my concern that something is wrong. Optimistically looking for your advice! p.s. sorry if this has nothing to do with the original post, Kelly's post just made me think about all this.
  6. Alright! That I will try! It no longer sounds like such a painful task. I can't find The Art of Fiction anywhere... suppose I'll have to order it. Thanks again, Megan
  7. DPW I'll try doing that for a day, everytime I use a concept, I'll ensure that I fully understand it's meaning. It'll probably be very discouraging... Thanks for the advice. megan
  8. I withdraw my previous post.
  9. Not that I have any doubts about what she said, just trying to understand how to integrate it all. I have been studying Ob. for two years now....
  10. Is it possible for a definition of something to be a floating abstration, or does it no longer float once you know the meaning. How do you integrate a definition into your mind? Sorry if this is repetitive from earlier posts, but I really don't understand how. Often, say, if I don't understand a word, if I look it up in the dictionary, and find the meaning, obviously, I have no solidly grounded it into my mind. Maybe not obviously, but I usually forget the definition soon after. Sometimes, I just repeat the word and the definition a couple of times. For example, reading Ayn Rand, I agreed with everything she said, because she backed it up and because I had witnessed several of the things she would write about. Therefore, what more do you need to do in order to concretize this knowledge? ---i'm confused
  11. fuzzy end of the lollipop, that's hilarious!
  12. Well, I really don't feel like commenting on your post right now, there is too much about it that bothers me. But as a single comment, I will say yes, it is moral for an employer to pay 'slave wages' (a contradiction in itself in my opinion) to someone who is willing to work for those 'slave wages'. I prefer the term low wages.
  13. I have to agree with pv. How can you be shocked at the beheading of an American in a sea of American-hating 'militant' Islamist? It is one thing to be shocked personally and outraged that ones values are being attacked, but it is another to have not foreseen and predicted something of the like happening when there are still Americans who insist on putting their life on the line in the middle East.
  14. Me, as a woman, I am competitive in debates, and have hence left all of my high school friends except for one. I don't think this is a quality of women in general. I beg to differ.
  15. Does anybody every consider what the owner's of the building think? If private property was respected, no such laws would ever be imposed. If the owner sees that he is losing business because of the smoke in his restaurant, etc., then he would be a bad business owner not to either arrange a separate area for smoking that would not bother the non-smokers or simply make the restaurant non-smoking. (restaurant, bar, whatever...) It's the idea of the paternalistic state that makes this possible, that you need the government to tell you to wear a bike helmet, that second hand smoke is harmful and that you need to be protected. I live in Ottawa, and you cannot smoke in any public building including bingo halls, bars, restaurants, etc. It's @#$% ridiculous!
  16. Kevin, Ignore my last question. But I must say, that from personal experience, I do believe that you can change your partner, if you are both rational individuals. I greatly influenced my boyfriend, and we have a great relationship. Do you have any concrete facts that prove otherwise, or is this only a theory. Because I hate to say it, but I think you are wrong. p.s. and no he's not whipped. lol megan
  17. Kevin, about changing your partner, did you mean that in a strictly guy must not change girl, or did you mean that neither partner must change the other. I disagree with the girl changing guy side, if that's what you meant, but am unsure about a guy changing a girl. But I kind of see where you're coming from. Does it have to do with the girl being the value searched out by the man??? Anyhow, please explain this further... Thanks, Megan
  18. I really like the way you put that Janet. I just recently moved on from the idea of striking, and realized that it was not the way to go. Sometimes though, especially for me (I'm only 20) it's hard to find the inspiration to pursue my goals, even though I have held them since I was a child. What keeps you going, may I ask? megan
  19. David Odden: I will simply quote Ayn Rand, cause she explained it very well, "The Theory of representative government rests on the principal that man is a rational being, i.e., that he is able to perceive the facts of reality, to evaluate them, to form rational judgments, to make his own choices, and to bear responsibility for the course of his life. Politically, this principal is implemented by a man's right to choose his own agents, i.e., those whom he authorizes to represent him in the government of his country. To represent him, in this context, means to represent his views in terms of political principles. Thus the government of a free country derives its 'just powers from the consent of the governed.' see Representation Without Authorization by Ayn Rand
  20. sorry, thanks for clearing that up. That's really all that was confusing me seeing as you had never posted before, to start out with a bang like that, well, you caught me off guard. But really, your post was HILARIOUS. megan
  21. Speaking of, I have my theories, but I was wondering if anyone knew exactly how the leaders would be chosen in a laissez-faire system. I know for a fact that it would be by vote, but I was curious as to more details on the process.
