  1. It's a holiday for black people, because if you're black, it's your duty to serve the 'black community'. I think that's why it's racist.
  2. Thanks for the sarcasm. I've never heard it in that context so perhaps you're right. Atleast I hope so.
  3. I apologize if I'm incorrect but what else could this mean?
  4. Please don't use the message board for advertising the sale of unethical and illegal copies of products.
  5. That may be, but what about physical limitations? It could be that since they have no opposable thumb or the ability to form languages, that there not able to exploit and improve their surroundings. I'm just playing devils advocate, I am going to do a bit of research on this.
  6. Will do, and thanks for the advice.
  7. Would any beginner biology course in college cover this topic? I'll be taking general biology next semester.
  8. Are there any writings on these issues that you could recommend? I don't have an opinion either way. I suppose I'm just skeptical of either side because I don't know a whole lot about it.
  9. I don't completely understand, Speicher. How is it that we can know for certain that animals function solely on 'automatic mechanisms'. I mean, my dog has done some pretty interesting things when she wants to do something. For instance, she likes sleeping on the coach, a rule she knows about. So the instant I leave she jumps on the coach, and when she hears me come back she jumps back off. Perhaps there are better examples that could be presented.
  10. I'd love to see Patrick Stewart as Socrates.
  11. Terry Goodkind is a wonderfull writer. His books are fast paced, with heroic characters and unbelievable drama. I suggest going to his site www.terrygoodkind.com and reading the interviews to get a taste of what kind of man/writer he is. To quote a section of the website:
  12. I've always been told that the Industrial Revolution was a time of corporate corruption and an all around chaotic life; hazardous jobs, unsafe houses, unsanitary food. This supposedly was because of a lack of government regulations. I really want to know what happened though--I don't necessarily trust my sources for a few reasons. Where do you suppose I can find information on this time period?
  13. God, her writing style is so infuriating. As I'm reading it, I feel as if I'm being mocked at the whole time.
  14. AIM SN: iObjectivist LOL. I couldn't believe that it wasn't taken already.
  15. Very good point Burgess! I hadn't thought of that. What are the reasons for finger printing and photo taking though? If they are just to keep a database of information of citizens then I wouldn't agree to it.
  16. I was thinking of the propositions that I will be voting for in California this Tuesday and I thought a thread on it would be most educating. I'd like to hear your opinions on these issues if you don't mind; I think it would be a good way to apply Objectivism. This link gives a brief synopsis of each proposition http://www.voterguide.ss.ca.gov/propositio...ropositions.htm Ballot Measure Summary for California Proposition 1A Protection of Local Government Revenues I'm not sure about this one. I don't have a great understanding of the inner working of government. Perhaps I'm missing something less obvious about it? Proposition 59 Public Records, Open Meetings. Legislative Constitutional Amendment. I would vote yes on it. I don't see why the public shouldn't have access to government meetings. Proposition 60 Election Rights of Political Parties. Legislative Constitutional Amendment. I agree with this one. Proposition 60A Surplus Property. Legislative Constitutional Amendment. Not sure about this one. I would like to see the money go to something else though; perhaps back to the people that they've stolen through taxes Proposition 61 Children’s Hospital Projects. Grant Program. Bond Act. Initiative Statute. Against this. Proposition 62 Elections. Primaries. Initiative Constitutional Amendment and Statute. Have no clue about this one Proposition 63 Mental Health Services Expansion, Funding. Tax on Personal Incomes Above $1 Million. Initiative Statute. Definitely against this Proposition 64 Limits on Private Enforcement of Unfair Business Competition Laws. Initiative Statute. Agree with this one and wish it could encompass medical malpractice suits. Proposition 65 Local Government Funds, Revenues. State Mandates. Initiative Constitutional Amendment. Don't really know about this one Proposition 66 Limitations on "Three Strikes" Law. Sex Crimes. Punishment. Initiative Statute. Against this one. It's too incomplete, leaving a lot uncontested. Proposition 67 Emergency Medical Services. Funding. Telephone Surcharge. Initiative Constitutional Amendment and Statute. Against this one. It'd be nicer to see efficiency improvements in the government--not throwing in more money. Proposition 68 Non-Tribal Commercial Gambling Expansion. Tribal Gaming Compact Amendments. Revenues, Tax Exemptions. Initiative Constitutional Amendment and Statute. For this. Proposition 69 DNA Samples. Collection. Database. Funding. Initiative Statute. Against this one on the basis that even potentially innocent people who are arrested will be subject to it. Proposition 70 Tribal Gaming Compacts. Exclusive Gaming Rights. Contributions to State. Initiative Constitutional Amendment and Statute. I'm voting NO on any coercive monopolies in the private sector. Proposition 71 Stem Cell Research. Funding. Bonds. Initiative Constitutional Amendment and Statute. This prop seems to have one good thing going for it, but when it says: "Establishes "California Institute for Regenerative Medicine" to regulate stem cell research" I changed my mind. Proposition 72 Health Care Coverage Requirements. Referendum. I'm against this one.
  17. What exactly has Bush done that has made us any safer? All I can see is that he's picked the wrong country to go to war and he's been increasing our already huge debt. Oh yah, and he's chipping away out our constitutional rights. So for all that he hasn't done, and all that he has done, I can't see how Bush is better than Kerry.
  18. No, it's implying that the whole Bush administration is out of line in their attempt to make Kerry look like a flip-flopper.
  19. http://www.rollingstone.com/news/story/_/i...-player=unknown I found this to be a very interesting illustration of the innovations capable under capitalism, albeit a small one.
  20. Why is there so much hatred of Columbus anway?
  21. I wasn't considering lyrics to be your own thoughts, but what GreedyCapitalist makes sense. What would you suggest to be a productive activity that can be done while driving a car?
  22. You could try audio tapes from the library or a book store to entertain yourself. You may want to try not listening to anything though. Some people can't stand listening to their own thoughts, but I think you can gain something valuable, by being introspective. Whether your situation is the result of some deep psychological factor, I couldn't tell you. All I can think of is that you may be trying to avoid something in your life by filling your thoughts with these songs-- in effect blanking out or running away from something. I don't know you at all so I could be way off. I'm trying to remember a good self help book, but the name escapes me. Nathaniel Branden has a few good ones. His Six Pillars of Self Esteem is quite good.
